Explanation of new warning levels

Weather Warnings are presented in three categories:

  1. STATUS YELLOW – Weather Alert – Be Aware

The concept behind YELLOW level weather alerts is to notify those who are at risk because of their location and/or activity, and to allow them to take preventative action. It is implicit that YELLOW level weather alerts are for weather conditions that do not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those exposed to risk by nature of their location and/or activity.

  2. STATUS ORANGE – Weather Warning – Be Prepared

This category of ORANGE level weather warnings is for weather conditions which have the capacity to impact significantly on people in the affected areas. The issue of an Orange level weather warning implies that all recipients in the affected areas should prepare themselves in an appropriate way for the anticipated conditions.

  3. STATUS RED – Severe Weather Warning – Take Action

The issue of RED level severe weather warnings should be a comparatively rare event and implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions.

Tragedy as man drowns in sea just 100m away from life buoy – Independent.ie

A man drowned off the Clare coast was just 100m away from a lifebuoy when he was swept into sea while fishing with a friend.

It’s unclear if the Lithuanian man got to the buoy before disappearing from sight off Blackhead lighthouse in North Clare.

His companion drove some 80m away to Tuam, in Co Galway but was unable to tell gardai where they had been fishing and could only indicate they were near a lighthouse…..

5,000 well grown parr for the Currane….

....and released back into the Cummeragh by Jimmy O'sullivan

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports from the Lough Currane system from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

05/12/2013: In addition to the 13,500 salmon fry released into the upper catchment a further 2,500 have now been fin clipped and successfully released downstream of the hatchery today. We have another 5,000 well grown parr, which will now be released in the New Year! We will be occupied until then catching up salmon for next year’s program! This means that Tom O’Shea, on behalf of Waterville Fisheries Development Group has produced 21,000 fish from the hatchery this year, a massive increase from the same number of broodstock salmon caught up last year! A total of 15 hen fish and 9 cock fish, caught up on the Cummeragh River last December have produced this amazing result.A marvellous effort! Thanks to Tom and all the volunteers and especially to Frank, Jimmy, John and James on the RSS team

Committee Chairman Tadhg O’Sullivan and our Secretary Kevin O’Sullivan attended the Galway Fly Fair encountered a good deal of interest in the work we do here, in particular our Court Action for Judicial revue against the Government’s granting of a new licence to extend the Salmon Farm at Deenish Island. A good number of donations were received this expensive court  action and we would ask again here for all the financial help you can give to the Fund.

Yaking along the Donegal Coast and catching the coalies

Graham from Boat Angling Ireland crew took to the tide on a Kayaks in Co Donegal recently and reports:

While with the pressure on in the kayak wars as it nears the end I went for a short session out near Dunaff.
It was very breezy but I was only going for a short session. Out I went and the coalies were tricky to find so I put on the euro champ rig so I had a chance of herring to.
Boat Angling Ireland - Kayak fishing 1

No herring but I eventually hit an odd coalie and then whollop I got a great take with power full runs and I my best coalie to date came to the kayak, he was a brute and on such a small rig I was lucky to get him in. They will be serious fun on the fly when the weather settles. Heres the brute no trophy pic as it was too windy for the deck camera. He weighted in at 4.5lb My best from the yak so far.
