A bit of diversity adds spice to life
Gerard Doran of South East Angling Services is not man to sit around, he’s well able to diversify and turn his hand to all types of fishing;
Its always good to mix things up a little so as a result a Pike fishing trip was on the cards. Here at South East Angling Services freshwater services are also available.
Static deadbaits and shads produced some nicely conditioned pike this week. No doubles but still nice fish!
Medium strength lure rods from Grauvell were used with 4000 sized pezon reels loaded with 30lb power pro braided lines. A short length of suitable steel at the business end ensured no pike could bite through with barbless treble hooks being used for the deadbaiting.
Many options exist for saltwater anglers during poor weather. Freshwater fishing using lures, fly or baits for Pike, Perch and Trout provides excellent and often overlooked sport.

Southern Sue from the land downunder enjoys the rainbows in Mullingar
I meet some wonderful characters on my travels in the Angling World, and Sue Atkins from South Australia is up their with the best characters. Sue was over visiting friend James McKeown of the splendid Austin Friars Hotel here in Mullingar, and I hooked up with Sue for a few hours fishing. The South Australia Ladies Angling Club member was in fine form, and banked lovely rainbows, and also managed to land her first Irish Pike. Sue and her club members will be keeping an eye on my Angling reports on line, and I reckon we will have some South Australia Ladies drifting into the Midlands in 2014.

A cracking Quantum perch for young April in Mullingar wins our Catch of the Week
Angling guide Michael Flanagan tells us:
On Sunday last while spinning small Lures on Derravaragh April got a few follows from Perch interested in her Quantum Trout Squad Lure. These Zebco Lures have very realistic action, and predator fish find it hard to resist taking these colorful Lures. Eventually the action of the Quantum Trout lure nailed a Perch, and it was a super looking fish. As you can see the Derravaragh Perch are a lot darker than the Ennell and Owel perch, and are a beautiful looking fish. Some time back I done a special feature on Zebco Quantum Lures on my site, and they should be available in most well stocked Angling Centers.

Tanya presents the Philip Moffat Memorial cup to Derravaragh angler

Michael Flanagan, Angling Guide and Reporter reports on the Philip Moffat Memorial Cup:
Last Sunday November 17th we lashed out from Donore Shore on Derravaragh for the Annual Christmas Pike competition. Also up for grabs was the Philip Moffat Memorial Cup. Sadly some years back Philip and some friends lost their lives in a drowning tragedy on the Lake. I grew up with Philip & the Moffat family here in Springfield, and always try my best to make this memorial competition. It was a brutal wet day on the lake, and the heavy mist never really lifted, so it was tough going.

On the day some cracking pike took the bait with local pike Angler Barry Darby having a fantastic day, boating 9 pike best of 13lbs 6oz to take Top Rod. Longford piker Joe McDermott rattled the scales with a pike of 12lbs 6oz to take 2nd spot, and Derravaragh club member Bogen Golebiewski landed a fine pike of 9lbs 2oz to take 3rd spot. Eleven prizes were presented in the senior section, and Paddy Hannon of Collinstown, John Flanagan Mullingar, Conor Hannon Athlone, also featured in the prizes.

It was certainly Ladies day in the Junior section as Darian Corcoran was crowned Top Rod, and her sister Alanis was 2nd, with April Flanagan 3rd. Presentation took place back at Weirs Lounge Multyfarnham, and Tanya Breslin daughter of the late Philip presented all winners on the day with their prizes. Joe Keena of Derravaragh Anglers thanked all who fished and supported Derravaragh Anglers in 2013, and hope to see you all in the New Year.

Wild and athletic with a super paint job…….and the pike looked good too!
Roly Byrne the River Barrow Piker gives into the call of the wild and heads to the Barrow. It’s not only fish Roly encountered, it was everything from a tv to a settee …..was he only dreaming…read on and find out:
The Barrow was calling, I had to get back to the river. My long summer malaise had been broken by the events of Friday (see the previous post). My mind raced as I poured over maps of the river examining swims, hidden lane ways, access points and photos from last season. It looked like something out of CSI Miami. I laughed to myself, yes there was a serious predator at large!

I was stuck in the salt mine all weekend but Monday was looking good, the weather pattern was holding nicely and the river should have fined down another little bit. I made some traces and grabbed a couple of Archie’s finest (WaterWolf) scud floats and was ready to rock n’roll….
A distinct nip in the air and a touch of ground frost caught my attention as I left the house, it was ball breaking cold, I glanced the temperature in the dash, 1.3 deg. I was frozen. I threw on the blower and pushed on to the river.
As I headed to the swim the sun finally decided to make a guest appearance, it forced its way through the cold morning haze, things were starting to warm up.
A very small fish was the fist to trip the alarms, he came to the bank quickly and was dispatched back to the margin.

It was only about twenty minutes later when another jack nailed a dead bait in the exact same spot, he made a short lived charge up the middle of the river before making a cameo appearance for the blog and then headed straight back to his watery lair. A little bigger than the first fish but not by much, the jacks were queuing up for the early morning feed and I was glad of the action. I wondered if this was a feeding spell I’d happened to hit upon or just a coincidence. Would it bring any bigger fish on the feed.

As I watched the water, a wooden pallet and football floated by… anything is liable to float past you on the Barrow. I once saw a partially submerged old tube television go by, obviously it was not plugged in and I know of a 3 peice sofa too, its wedged up against a undercut bank, red in colour if my memory serves me right. Is it any wonder they threw it out…
Blip blip blip….. a tripped alarm pulled my gaze from the bobbing football. Then the line tore off the reel. Usain Bolt was in town! This was a more powerful fish, it kept its head down and pushed upstream, charging for its goal. I upped the drag and held my breath… Two runs and a damaged net later a most incredibly marked Barrow Pike came to the net. Not the biggest fish in the world but fit, wild and athletic with a super paint job! It looked like somebody had just pimped my Pike.

First pike for Alexia
Guide Richie Johnston of Guide Fishing Ireland reports:
I was recently out of action for a few weeks with busted ankle ligaments sustained after a fall out walking. Just before the accident I had taken a French visitor out for an afternoons Pike fishing. Alexia was in Dublin for a few days and wanted to spend a few hours fishing in an attempt to catch her first Irish Pike.
We went to a midland lake and for the first hour or so Alexia tried fly-fishing and lures. The water was still quite warm and we came across large amounts of roach and perch near some weed beds. Despite a few follows right to up to the side of the boat, the fish eluded Alexia.

While trying the flies we also put a deadbait out the back as the boat was drifting. It was not long before we had a take, and Alexia was soon into her first Irish pike. After a short but strong fight she landed her fish, weighing around 9 or 10 pounds. After a few pictures the fish was returned with Alexia a happy lady.
Moving on, I am looking forward to next week and the group coming to the Western Loughs. The lads are really looking forward to the trip. Interest in the Corrib/Mask Pike trips has been great and I have full compliment for 24th/25th November. Also have additional date of Dec 8th/9th for anyone interested.
Pike Trip weekends to Corrib/Mask include 2 nights in 3* lough side hotel, 2 days guided fishing. Package includes boats, engines and pack-lunches. All for only €280 per person. Maximum 4 people.
To go fishing…

Rare marine habitat found off southwest coast – RTE News

Scientists from NUI Galway have discovered a marine habitat with organisms hundreds of years old in Irish waters.
The researchers published their findings today, in the PLOS One academic journal.
Their exploration has revealed a previously hidden world, 800m below the sea surface.
The habitat was located in the Whittard Canyon, around 200km off the southwest coast.
It was found on a rock face around 150m high.
It is rich in biodiversity, with an array of bivalves and deep water oysters, co-existing with fish, crabs and coral.
The researchers say it is extremely rare to see so many, so close and so large at such depth…..
