The penultimate leg of the Galway Shore Master Angler series

Galway Buccaneers SAC congratulate Danny Sweeney on winning leg 9 of our Shore Master Angler series and report:

A cold Novembers evening greeted our anglers as they lined up for the penultimate leg of our shore master angler series.

The beach was free from weed however after arriving in darkness the competitors were unaware of a bank of weed that was floating behind the main breaker. The main target species of dogs and whiting were going to be hard got and several rigs were lost in their pursuit.

A change of tactics was sought and scrathing rigs were baited up and lobbed into the wash to try and winkle out a few flats and coalfish.

Danny Sweeney landed the first fish of the night a coalie while Rob King landed a counting flounder and a counting coalie soon after, Conor Mountaine meanwhile was finding it tough going on peg 1 with weed causing problems and Norbert Zimmerer was fairing no better on the end peg. Conor managed to get off the mark eventually and as the last casts went out it could have went anyway and indeed the long time leader Rob King was just pipped to first place by Danny who landed another coalie at the death to take 1st place. Thanks to all who came out and fished see you all at the last leg  ~ The Committee

Just as likely to catch bass now on the southern coasts as April

There has been a significantly likelihood of catching bass on the more southern coasts as of late. This likelihood is as ‘equal’, even if a little more timing is involved, as any time previous up to when the season began last April.

There is stability in the system somewhat and this may increase over the next ten days (Wed is tough) as Ireland will sit in some high pressure. At least we can be a little optimistic if this happens but keep your weather eye on things all the way through this week. By paying a little attention to the daily indications and then the subsequent impact this may have on the the period from the 29th, you never know – don’t put away the gear just yet!

They are out there, not many, but some, and they are likely to stay for a while if it pans out!

Bass and chubby cod by the light of the moon in Youghal

5 lb bass
5 lb bass

The full moon and the big tides didn’t deter Peter Murphy aka Rockhunter from heading to Youghal Harbour.  By the light of the moon he made his way to his favourite spot.  Laiden down with crab bait he set himself up and it wasn’t long before he landed a fine 5lb bass followed quickly by a chubby 3.25lb cod.  The following day being Saturday he made his way a bit further out of the harbour and some coalfish and a fighting cod was his catch. Read how Rockhunter got on the following as he describes on his blog ‘Fishing around Youghal

Three Bearded Rockling on the first cast !

South East Angling Services guide Gerard Doran reports:

This wonderful Three Bearded Rockling was caught recently over mixed ground. Swallowing a fresh mackerel fillet on a pulley rig with 4/0 Sakuma Manta’s was no problem. And on the first cast too!

It fell just short of the ISFC specimen size which is 0.794 kg or 1.75lbs.

A super Ramor pike on a hot orange for Damien

Damien Willis from www.loughfishingbuddies.com reports from Lough Ramor…

Fly fishing for pike is a challenge in itself with precision double haul casting, specific fly lines, reels and fly rods are all required to catch these large fighting fish. I have spent a handful of days over the last six weeks fly fishing Lough Ramor fly fishing for Pike. High westerly winds combined with lots of rainfall do not exactly favour this sport however a day out fishing is a luxury for me to relax from the pressures of commuting to Dublin each day from County Cavan.

Damien Willis - Pike

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALough Ramor is a long narrow shallow lake which can become quickly coloured caused by our ever changing climate. Bait fish such as roach will shoal together in the shallows over the winter months luring predators such as pike into these areas surrounding Lough Ramor. Anglers from all parts of the country often spend long nights in near freezing conditions in pursuit of these large pike. I have invested in the very latest technology which greatly increases my chances of connecting with fresh water fish in particular Pike on the Fly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis week I was fortunate to locate some feeding fish which hiding in a sheltered part of the Lough not accessable from the shoreline. In the space of 10 minutes I managed to hook a nice low double on a hot orange Frankie Mc Philips immation.

Dubliner Richard wins at Oaklands

Oaklands winner Richard Keenan
Oaklands winner Richard Keenan

Very mild calm conditions at the open match in Oaklands yesterday. Even though it’s mid November with the temperature dropping it did not effect the fishing. Fishing peg peg 15 Richard Keegan from Dublin came out on top with a great net of 55kgs (121lbs).  Richard caught at 14mt on corn hook bait hard on the bottom. Great sport is still to be had at the lake for the time with even tench being caught.

Dogs and Bulls keep the Castle Maiden crew busy in Wicklow

About 10 BullHuss were taken among about 14 Spurdogs on a deep water mark.
About 10 BullHuss were taken among about 14 Spurdogs on a deep water mark.

The Castle Maiden took to the seas with skipper Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters and earned her keep. Some fine double figured spurs and bullhuss kept the anglers happy.  Kit reports:

At last after a period of high winds a break sees the Spurdogs on the deep water marks. I don’t think we got out for 3 weeks with persistent fresh winds, then as we had a break and neap tides the first Spurdogs showed on 2 marks 4-5Nm offshore.

Darren Gallagher’s crew got a taste for big fish when they had plenty of Tope and BullHuss in September, they came back for more. Fishing on the Castle Maiden, Wicklow Boat Charters new addition to the fleet, they anchored up in 40Metres with the Ebb tide easing towards slack.

It didn’t take long for Darren, a very experienced competitive angler to bag his first Spur, and a few more after that. Many double figure fish were landed either side of slack water and as the Flood took off it was time for a move North. Mark 2 produced bursts of Spur as shoals moved through, and many double figure Bullhuss came too. It was a great day by all accounts.

An inshore mark produced lots of whiting.

On a trip this weekend in Spring tides Peter Walker and Patsy Boland opted for an inshore day out of the racing tide, the only option really. The illusive Spur didn’t show but a few dogs and Whiting in 2’s and 3’s kept us busy.

A trip well worth waiting for…..two pros take on Crosshaven

Wexford guide Sid Jones with a fine 22lb conger
Wexford guide Sid Jones with a fine 22lb conger

When two experience men come together for fishing the outcome is undoubtable good.  This is the case with Wexford guide Sid Jones and Charterboat skipper Pat Condon.  Sid tells the tale:

Finally after a months wait due to bad weather my trip could finally go ahead. Crosshaven being the destination aboard Pat Condon’s Osprey II and to say we were all looking forward to it is an understatement.

Well done Amy Lynch

All aboard and steaming out to our first mark in no time at all with Pat at the helm, Pat quickly set the Osprey II up for our first drift and in no time at all we were into the fish with Amy Lynch landing the first fish of the day followed in quick succession by my son Dan bringing a mackerel to the boat. We fished hard drifting over the mark with good catches of ling being caught with a cracking 11lb ling for Amy Lynch.

Pat anchored us above a wreck and  we managed to bring up a few conger eels although we lost quite a few also !! The best surprise of the day was the service that Pat provided us with and the handing down of knowledge, tips and ideas along with an excellent fry up on a cold but very enjoyable November day. I couldn’t recommend Pat Condon highly enough, Excellent Skipper and a true gentleman.

Wild fish need more protection, Irish Examiner

(In Letters)

The Federation of Irish Salmon and Sea Trout Anglers (FISSTA) has protested and lodged complaints to both Inland Fisheries Ireland and Mayo County Council at the damming of a river on Clare Island. We view this as another action that disrespects and disregards all environmental regulations that protect our wild fish habitat. FISSTA are extremely alarmed that regulations guarding our fresh water sources for our wild salmon and seatrout habitat are being further ignored by fish farmers…
