Kevin Leahy wins third round of Munster CAC winter league at Portumna

Portumna

Munster Coarse Anglers fished the third match of their winter series in Portumna at the weekend. Kevin Leahy reports…

The swap back to Portumna for the 3rd match proved to be a good one. Twelve anglers fished in 2 sections; Section1. Salmon Run, Section2.Shebeen.

It was a of case of choose your method and stick to it for this round of the league. The whip proved to be the winning method in both sections. The bigger fish on the feeder line came with bigger disadvantage of attracting the attentions of Pike, and many curses and new swear words peppering the tranquillity of the Galway shore lines.

Thank you to Portumna Coarse Angling Club for letting us on to the venue.

Top 4 anglers

1st Kevin 30lb 15oz (Salmon Run)
2nd Paddy 28 lb 03oz (Shebeen)

Moyvalley once again the ‘hot spot’ for Leinster Coarse Anglers

In a repeat of their last match, the Leinster Coarse Anglers held the latest round of their league over two separate venues at Moyvalley and Blackshade. Unfortunately (for those drawn at Blackshade…), the fishing followed the same pattern: tons of fish at Moyvalley and very little action at Blackshade.

All smiles at Moyvalley…

So, while Pat Bartley was flying with over 11kg at Moyvalley, Dara Finnegan could only muster up 3kg to win the Blackshade section. In fact, the combined weights of the top three at Blackshade wouldn’t have made the placings at Moyvalley…

Pat’s winning bag

Results as follows:

Blackshade.
A…..Dara Finnegan…………3.04.
B…..Jack Langan……………1.03.
C…..Jeff Morrison…………..0.10.
Moyvalley.
D……Michael O’Connor……7.10.
E……Pat Bartley……………….11.02.
Overall Winners.
1st……Pat Bartley…………….11.02.

Cold snap switches pike on for Fish Tales clients

In recent posts, Chris Scally of Fish Tales has been lamenting the unseasonably warm November, as the pike seemed to be put off the take, and so fish were hard to come by. He predicted that a cold snap would shake things up a bit and was looking forward to a break in the weather. Well, he got his wish this past week as temperatures plummeted, and sure enough, his prediction came through as the pike became far more active, resulting in a great day out for a couple of his clients.

Vlad and Valentyn were the lucky two to be out with Chris, and they had numerous fish in the 90cm zone but topped it off by catching a super 106cm pike. They also caught a good few chunky-looking perch, making it an action-packed day, and they have promised a return visit in 2025.

CM Lakelands Feeder Club hold match on Garadice

The CM Lakelands Feeder Club held an Open Club Feeder match on Haughton’s shore of Lough Garadice on Sunday from 10.30am to 3.30pm. It was a cool, calm day with an overcast sky and barely a ripple to tarnish glass-like lake surface.

At lines out it was Rimantas Kondrakas in overall first place, with a weight of just over 4.5kgs. Rimantas caught 2 bream and 28 smaller fish to win the day from peg 64. In 2nd overall was Graham Worley with another 4 kg plus weight made up of hybrids and roach. In 3rd was Nick Richards with a mixed bag of skimmers, hybrids and roach for a 3kg plus weight.

A pleasant enough day on the water for all involved.

  • 3RD Nick Richards 3.325kg

Fine 20lb+ pike landed at Leinster Pike Anglers Competition

It's a cracker!

The Leinster Pike Anglers held their third winter league competition at a midlands river venue last weekend. It was a fine dry day, and the favourable weather may have helped encourage anglers as there was a decent turnout on the day.

For most shore-based pike competitions, particularly on rivers, a good double is normally enough to win the heavies fish award, but this time out, the magic 20lb mark was broken, as Jay Cooke landed a super fish that tipped the scales at 20lb 6oz.

It’s a cracker!

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to see him in the placings, though, as Rodney Gaynor took that accolade with ten fish for 41lb 10oz.

Full results as follows:

Best Bags:
1st: Rodney Gaynor – 10 fish, totalling 41lb 10oz
2nd: Anthony Lennon – 11 fish, totalling 35lb 13oz
3rd: Jan Rutkowski – 14 fish, totaling 35lb
Pool Pairs:
Rodney Gaynor & Jan Rutkowski – 24 fish, totalling 76lb 10oz
Anthony Byrne & Donagh O Connell – 15 fish, totaling 54lb 13oz
Heaviest Fish:
Jay Cooke – 20lb 06oz

Bass smashing lures morning, noon and night in south east

This report in from Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast:

If you were lucky enough to have been bass fishing on the South East Coast of Ireland recently you would have experienced some of the best fishing in a long, long time!

The last few weeks we have seen numbers of bass feeding with the shoals often hitting the shore devouring sprats, sandeel and herring.

Average fish was approximately 4lb with numerous 60cm + and a few 70s for good measure.

The fishing has been relentless morning, noon and night on numerous locations.

The prime catch times for me have been dawn and dusk, and I’ve been matching my tactics to the daily habits of the sprat who instinctively swim to the surface in the evening and return closer to the bottom at first light. Therefore, topwater was very effective in the evening with shallow divers deadly in the morning. Actually, it’s been hard lures only – shallow divers, surface lures and metals, not a soft plastic in sight!

The masses of baitfish offshore, along with herring and sandeels, have provided an abundance of food for the bass which appear to be in prime condition possibly preparing for spawning.

There is so much we still don’t know about bass, a fish that continues to give us so much action so late in the year!

Eight year old Euan lands nine pike on Erne

Until last Saturday, eight-year-old Euan McKee from Carnlough in Antrim had never caught a pike despite many attempts. However, his luck changed completely recently when he and his father Ryan fished Lough Erne with Peter Neeson. On a day when conditions came good and the pike were hungry, Euan landed a total of nine altogether! The fish weighed in at between two and fourteen pounds, the biggest and best being taken on a trolled soft plastic.

Well done Euan – a day that he’ll never forget!
