Bags to over 71lb for coarse anglers at Lanesborough

32.5kg of of roach and a couple of bream
32.5kg of of roach and a couple of bream

Leigh Maitland was fishing at Lanesborough earlier this week. Having read Paul Waghorn’s reports that there were lots of smaller roach with some more about the 200g mark Leigh decided to try his luck and see if he could build a decent catch by feeding heavily with a sticky groundbait. Leigh fed his swim with a mix of hemp and caster in the hope that the bigger fish would move in…

A selection of the bait for the day
A selection of the bait for the day - 2 Pints of Caster 2 Pints Hemp 1 Pint Maggots 1 Pint Pinkies 2kg CC Black Magic 1kg CC River 2kg Black Crumb

On Sunday water levels were low and Leigh fished the pole at 11m over  around 1m of water. Friends fising with him were catching from the off so morale was good on the river bank. Having set up Leigh fed a nugget with each run of the float and picked up a lot of fish. So much so that he wondered if he had enough bait for the day! In the end he finished with 9.1kg of roach.

On Tuesday Leigh was back at Lanesboroughwith rather more bait:

  • 6 Pints of Caster
  • 3 Pints Hemp
  • 1 Pint Red Maggots
  • 1 Pint Bronze Maggots
  • 1 Tin of Corn
  • 2kg CC Black Magic
  • 2kg CC River
  • 3kg Black Crumb
  • Again Leigh was on the pole and fed the swim with one handed balls of groundbait laced heavily with casters, some hemp and a few grains of corn every put in. The groundbait was introduced slightly down stream of his pole tip and lowering the rig in on the same line every time in line with a far bank marker, give total control over the rig.

There was no initial balls introduced this time, just a nugget then a run through. From the second put it produced a fish, and so on, after probably 10 minutess and constant feeding the stamp of Roach started to get a bit bigger and as time went on bigger fish started to make an appearance. Leigh had a few Roach to 700g and 2 Bream to 1.8kg amongst a 32.5kg final weight.

Wexford Fishing Guide Sid Jones tells us of a recent angling trip:

“After a short evening fishing session dodging showers with my fly rod, a beautiful spirited 2½lb sea trout fell to the charms of my Teal Blue and Silver Fly.  It was fished slow and deep on one of my favourite stretches of the river Slaney.  One of two fish caught, the other being a beautifully marked but juvenile wild Brownie both returned to fight another day.”

Brian McEvoy managed a 10lb salmon caught trolling on Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports from Lough Melvin – Monday 1st  April to Sunday 7th April 2013.

Lough Melvin was quiet over the week with little angling effort once again in the cold conditions. The Lough remains very low especially given the time of year. There was no trout angling effort it seems and a limited number of boats out for salmon although 7 boats ventured out on Sunday. There were a couple of salmon reported. On Thursday, Noel Johnston recorded a 7lb salmon caught trolling off Ward’s Point in the Rossinver Fishery. On Sunday, Brian McEvoy accounted for a 10lb salmon caught trolling.

The forecast is for conditions to improve towards the weekend with air temperatures rising as the winds swing round to the south. Hopefully this will encourage flies to hatch and anglers to venture out!

Low water levels on the River Drowes did little to help the anglers

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 1st  April to Sunday 7th April 2013.

The dry cold weather continues and the river ran at very low levels all week once again. Some of the deeper pools hardly have a flow of water at this stage! Day time temperatures were better however in the strong sunshine but most evenings brought a ground frost. The gauge is only reading just over 0.4 metres but the water temperature has risen slightly to 6°C (still bloomin cold!). Angling attendance was not particularly high due to the low water but a number of rods did fish and there was 3 salmon recorded to date all from the lower half of the river and a number of fish hooked nut lost again on flies. On Wednesday, Jim McAlister recorded a 7lb salmon caught on prawn from the Washstones and Neil Seales logged an 8lb salmon caught from Lennox’s on a spinner. On Saturday, Marty King accounted for a 7lb salmon caught on prawn from the Trout Pool.

The week is forecast to bring much the same weather.  Air temperatures are meant to rise at the weekend however as the winds become southerlies and some rain is forecast, but how much, we will only know then.

    Irish Angling Update – 11/04/13

A Nice April Evening on Lough Muckno, Co. Monaghan
A Nice April Evening on Lough Muckno, Co. Monaghan

The weather continues to be wintry with easterlies dominating forecasts coupled with heavy rain in places in recent days. A change is due and hopefully it will see spring take a proper hold, water temperatures increase and angling prospects improve. Having said that there were a few anglers who managed to connect with some decent fish during breaks in the weather.

    Nice male skate 115lb
This male skate of 115lb wins Peter Catch of the Week

Some good charter fishing was reported from Dunmore East where a party of 8 anglers had 11 species including cod to over 10lb. At the other end of the country small boat anglers enjoyed greater success with a much smaller catch. Peter and friends fished a mark off the Maidens and landed a male skate of over 100lbs which wins Peter Catch of the Week.

There were a number of encouraging salmon reports over the last 7 days, but again it was all down to anglers making the most of lulls in the poor weather conditions. At Lough Currane there were days when fishing was impossible but some sea trout and salmon were reported including two fish landed yesterday evening to 14lb. Sea trout and salmon also featured on the Laune despite low water, though the salmon were of a smaller size.  On the River Bandon salmon to 17lb were reported including a lovely fish of 15lb landed in the town. Fort William on the Munster Blackwater enjoyed some great fishing with 10 salmon to 11lb to mark the start of April. Good fishing continued on the Slaney with a number of salmon reported and at Delphi despite fishing being very difficult with the level at ‘0’ on the scale, 3 salmon were landed.

Cold winds and cold waters made fly fishing for river trout a game for the wets as there were few hatches of anything at all to tempt trout to the surface. Traditional flies in a team of 3 did well for one angler on the River Suir. On the River Liffey anglers using modern streamers had good fish, while nymphs accounted for some pretty trout on Cavan’s smaller waters. Black Minkies and Humongouses accounted for some good fish on Lough Sheelin, though  duckfly and tradional patterns did well where there was a bit of a buzzer hatch in the lake’s more sheltered corners. Some good trout were taken on Lough Owel and Robert Farrington fished a Silver Invicta to good effect, catching 6 fishing and winning the Jimmy Allard Cup.

Double trouble in the pike world came in the form of twins John and Michael who had a number of double figure pike on the Shannon near Athlone. The pair had pike of 20lb, 18lb, 2 at 16lb and a number of more fish over 10lb. On the River Barrow conditions were tough last Friday with just jacks to show for the efforts of a father and son team.

Coarse angling reports are still thin on the ground but good weights were recorded last week at  the Lough Muckno Easter Festival 2. The winner at White Island on Friday was Darren Fairhurst from the UK and Dublin with a 8.860kg net of mixed fish. The best weight from Section B on Black Island was taken by Rory O’Neill from Newry with 11.020kg.

The forecast is for unsettled and changeable weather over the weekend and next week, with temperatures recovering close to normal. Sunday should see the winds move into the southwest quarter, the change nearly everyone has been waiting for. Daytime temperatures will be as high as 14C next week there will still be frost at night

    Tight lines,
    Myles Kelly

17lb Salmon caught with two others on the River Bandon

Eileen Carroll Murphy IFI reports from the River Bandon for the week ending Sunday April 7th:

    RIVER BANDON

3 salmon landed for the week, two captured and one released.  The biggest was 17lbs caught and released by a Cork City Anglers on a fly.

Skate to over 100lb for small boat anglers at the Maidens

    Nearly 2 hours later
    Nearly 2 hours later

Peter, Mark and Scarb from www.boat-angling-ireland.com made a quick run to the Maidens in what started off as a beautiful day but became unbearably cold. They managed a couple of fish before returning to land. Given that the first one took nearly two hours to bring to the boat it was not a bad result…

We went out to the hole for the last hour or so of the ebb, then hopefully fish the whole flood tide up to 8pm. We all stuck down a skate bait and it wasn’t long before my rod nearly got pulled from the holder. The fish just took off, never had one run so quickly from the off. The fish was giving a very good account of itself, and the longer the fight went on the wind started to pick up from the SE making it very cold

    Nearly 2 hours later
    Nearly 2 hours later

After nearly 2 hours it finally appeared at the side of the boat and was safely gaffed and brought aboard measured and tagged it turned out to be a 115lb male  .

    Nice male skate 115lb
Nice male skate 115lb - this fish wins Peter Catch of the Week

By this time the wind had got quite strong blowing from the SE,against the tide which prevented the boat from getting round the anchor. It was getting very cold and we thought about lifting but Mark was determined to break his duck for 2013 and tried a doggy trace for a few mins and managed his first fish since Nov 2012 and what a cracker it was (!).

It was a fairly rough trip back in but it wasn’t long till we were safely tucked up in the golf club.

Carton House rainbows on nymphs and lures

A good fish taken in difficult conditions on the Sheet of Water
A good fish taken in difficult conditions on the Sheet of Water

The Rainbows on the Sheet of Water are really starting to get hold of the spring theme and are feeding quite hard.  There is surface activity during the milder hours of 11 – 3 although there is also sport to be had outside these hours.

Conditions were far from favourable last Friday when a visiting group of anglers from Intel came to the fishery, in spite of cold and bright conditions several fine fish were returned – the best probably around the 6lb mark.

It is an excellent spot to get some casting practice in as there is little fear of back casts becoming snagged etc and it is quite sheltered even in the most unfavourable of conditions.

Several types of fly are working well with the more typical ‘rainbow flies’ at the top of the list.   The more successful flies at the moment are in orange fritz or pink fritz.  Also worth a try are more traditional nymph patterns such as GRHE and Goldheads.

Typical river set up’s are perfect as the water is not particularly deep – a 5wt rod being perfectly adequate.

Fishing / watercraft lessons can also be arranged on this stretch of water.  Included in the price for a lesson is the hire of a rod, reel, line and flies for anyone new to the sport.

Ryewater is low and clear with expectations of good fishing when winds change

This weekend it looks like we are finally going to lose the cold easterly winds.  With fingers and toes firmly crossed that this comes to pass then the fishing on the Rye Water should be superb.

As already mentioned in previous reports the Large Dark Olive is featuring on the river, and although they are a hardy bunch there is little doubt that a rise in temperatures will get them in more of a mood to go forth and multiply.

Higher humidity should also be of assistance to Mr Trout as it often takes longer for the fly to break free of its nymphal shuck in such conditions.  Flies also struggle to unfold and dry their wings when humidity is higher and are in a most precarious position until airborne.

With this in mind a size 14 CDC bubble emerger is certainly worth stocking up on – and using especially during the earlier stages of a hatch – rise forms are key here.

As already mentioned in the previous reports both flashback PTN and Hares Ear in size 14 are also worth a try.

The River is running very clear at present so a fair degree of stealth is required when approaching pools and fishing – casts really have to be kept to a minimum.

Floating lines of 4 or 5 weight are ideal – anything heavier can tend to spook the beautifully marked resident brownies.  Fishing is strictly by fly only and all fish caught must be returned.

Salmon to 14lb and some sea trout about as winds ease on Currane

Two salmon and the end of the day on Currane
Two salmon and the end of the day on Currane

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports on the recent fishing in the Lough Currane area.

10/04 All the head lines go to Mr. Gareth Brain and his brother Sion of Waterville  and of www.kbfishingireland.com and for good reason. They went out a 5 pm and were in by 7 pm with two Salmon, ranging from 8 lbs up to 14 lbs. Just for the record they were both caught on the troll. Wind SSE light and overcast with light showers at times.

Two salmon and the end of the day on Currane
Two salmon and the end of the day on Currane

09/04 My noble anglers failed in the Salmon department, so we will go straight to the Sea Trout department. Mr. Denis Dennehy caught a fine 1 lbs Sea Trout off the point of  Grassy Island and also caught a few Brown Trout down by the Reeds. His quote of the day was “I had a good welcome back and a good soaking”.

The 7th and 8th were windy, wild and unpleasant and no fish were reported.

06/04 All the headlines go to German Angler, Mr. Bernd Rall, who caught a fine 10lbs  Salmon on the fly, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan and of www.vincentsfishing.com. For the rest of we so called anglers the least said the soonest mended. Wind SE light with cloud cover at times.

05/04 In the Catch and Release sea trout department and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com PJ and Henry Keating of Co Meath, caught 2 Sea Trout ranging from 2lbs up to 2.5lbs and 1 Brown Trout of 1.5lbs. All caught on the fly yesterday.

That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
