A gentle giant of a pike followed by a Barrow fighter

A rusty Barrow piker tackles the river again.  Pondering where to establish himself on the river bank, Roly Byrne scrutinises the water, hoping for a hint. But he needn’t have worried his old talent came back to him.  He had four fish, two of those doubles and a missed run…..

The first was a gentle monster weighing in the double figures. The second was a much more aggressive but slightly smaller fish which put up a great fight.  Read Roly Byrnes article ‘A Red Letter Morning’

Another big flood to help bring the fish in on the Blackwater

Blackwater Lodge reports:  20/03/2013: There were only a couple of rods out on the river. Michael McCormack from Wexford
caught a sea-liced 8¾lb. fish  on the Island Stream on Lower Kilmurry.

Following 60mm rain in 1½ days, the river peaked @ 2.70m on the Ballyduff gauge during the evening of March 22nd. Water temperature is 7½°C

The forecast is now dry and cold right through until the end of next week.

22/03/2013: The flood peaks at 2.70m  @ 5.00pm.

24/03/2013: Down to 1.10m at 10.30am today. Clarity improving rapidly – now 1½-2 feet.

Big Tides next week – Tide heights will peak at 3.9m at the end of next week which should also encourage fish to run in especially as the flood will be fining off nicely at that stage.

Sea trout run has started on the Laune

The Laune Anglers report that the sea trout run has started on the Laune…

Sean O’Sullivan got the sea trout fishing started last week with a nice trout at Johnston’s. On Tuesday last Garry Fernane from Tralee hooked 4 trout while ” test driving” a 13 foot Redington fly rod.  The two trout he landed were about 1.5 lbs and he said that he lost the best one a fish of up to 3lbs.  He also caught two brown trout up to 12 inches.  The Fly a Silver Bodied Stoat’s Tail.  Garry was fishing Charlie Johnston’s, Tom Johnston’s  and Heffernan’s.

This is a good indicator of an early start to the sea trout run.  The best sea trout fishing on the Laune in 2012 was during April especially in the last two weeks. Sea trout in 2012 ran to 3lbs and over, lets hope its the same in 2013.

Great day out for the opening of Tolka Trout anglers’ competition – Irish Times

MEMORIES came flooding back as I walked a section of the Tolka River last weekend for the opening day of the Tolka Trout Anglers’ Association (TTAA) competition at Broombridge in Finglas. Living upriver close to Ashtown at an early age, the river is where I first became hooked on fishing. Little had changed, crystal clear water meandering through wild and wonderful meadows with an abundance of quality brown trout. Last year’s revelation of salmon scaling the weir at Royal Oak Weir in Finglas opened up yet another chapter for this magical river…

Beach hunt bids to find shark eggs – Belfast Telegraph

Co-operative members are being recruited to take part in egg hunts with a difference – they will be looking for shark eggs on beaches.

The Shark Trust’s “great eggcase hunt” will see volunteers heading to the coast to search for the eggcases, known as “mermaid’s purses”, in which the young of many skates and rays and some sharks are laid.

They will use an identification guide to discover which species hatched from the egg and record the location where it was found, as part of conservation efforts to ensure the UK’s shark species are adequately protected. Recent estimates suggest almost 100 million sharks are being caught worldwide by commercial fishing fleets, with sharks’ fins being used for a soup delicacy in Asia….

South coast small boat anglers catch specimen haddock, good ling, plaice, cod…

Not quite the specimen, but very close
Not quite the specimen ling, but very close

Martyn Rayner, Seirt Shultz and Tony Tait onboard the small boat Screaming Reels enjoyed the fine sunshine, and light winds earlier this week. Using frozen mackerel and razorfish with a variety of muppets, Fat boys, pirks and jelly worms the trio had some exciting angling and landed 30 ling to 24lbs, 2 cod to 12lbs, specimen sized haddock, plaice, whiting and poor cod.

Fishing over a wreck that had produced for Tony in the past mupets and fat boys had the fish biting from the first drop and a number of ling to 10lb were brought to the boat.
The fishing was steady with a nice slow drift over the wreck, but there was still tackle losses. More ling were accounted for and a slightly better size was beginning to show.
Martin opted for a change in tactics and tried gilling. He soon had a nice cod on the deck , but after a good 30 minutes trying not a lot else was taken on that wreck.

A decent cod

A number of other wrecks were targetted but none yielded any fish – netting suspected as the cause. The tide had turned and they returned to the first wreck of the day. The three anglers were into much bigger fish, and before long Seirt landed what looked like a specimen ling, and on the boat was bouncing around the 25lb mark. Unfortunately back onshore it was just over the 24lb mark, a shame as they are a tough specimen to get! A good few more fish between 15 and 23 lb were landed and we headed back to do some inshore fishing.

The boys were not expecting too much, and whilst Martin was setting up a smaller flatty rig for his second rod, Seirt told him he had a bite. Sure enough a good fish was on, it was nodding hard , so Martin thought it was a cod. But up to the net came a fantastic haddock, which when weighed back onshore hit 7.05 lbs, a specimen!  Tony also picked up a cracker and it was 5.7lbs, two great fish but nothing else apart from a few whiting.

With those great fish landed they headed in closer inshore to see if they could pick up a dab for the master angler competition, but as much as they tried, all they kept picking up were plaice. They were nicely marked fish and Seirt had one around the 2lb mark, another nice fish for the day. All the plaice were returned as they were very thin.

No dabs were biting but no one mided with these plaice about

Wexford sea trout on plugs and soft plastics earlier this week

Sea trout caught on soft plastics
Sea trout caught on soft plastics

Sean Jordan of Bass Fishing Wexford reports that bright conditions in the first half of the week made dawn and dusk sessions the best option for sea-trout this week.

Sea trout caught on soft plastics

Sean found that these silvery predators were around in good numbers on a couple of marks at dusk. One sea trout caught on soft plastics had clearly been gorging on sandeels, with fish tails sticking from its gullet clearly visible. All the sea trout caught  were safely released to continue there nomadic lifestyle.

Sea anglers are advised to handle any sea trout inadvertently caught out of season or without a licence, with great care to assure their safe return to the sea.

Irish Angling Update 21/03/13

All eyes to the South East – 15 Salmon in two days – The beautiful Slaney rewarded it’s anglers. On a cold St Patrick’s Day the river provided great sport for its loyal fishermen.  1″ copper tubes on fast sinking tips were the choice of the day. And our choice of the week for ‘Catch of the Week’ goes to this majestic river.

Both Delphi and the Drowes were praying for rain with the water levels low at the start of last weekend. Believe me, looking out the window right now I can see their prayers have been answered. Not only has God sent the rain today but he coupled it with gusts of wind that would skin a donkey! Some beautiful fresh springers did show up at Delphi and on the Drowes Fergal Hanley had a lovely deep 16.5lbs Fish on a Copper Toby from Peter’s Reeds on St Patricks Day.

In a departure from tradition this week Catch of the Week goes to a river and not an angler – The Slaney had a great opening day earlier this week

March 18th saw Carrowmore lake Bangor Erris reporting it’s first Salmon of 2013 with Gary Lloyd from Westport hooking an 8lb fish on a Green Peter. Also with their first salmon are the North Kerry anglers on Saturday. The 8lb fish fell to a rough tied bastard fly at the “Joinings”. While in neighbouring Co Cork at Inniscarra Salmon fishery, Paul Hanley caught a fine 17lb Salmon earlier this week.
The Moy has moved onto it’s third and fourth salmon of the season, both were caught last weekend. An impressive 13lbs and an 11lb salmon both using a worm. Two springers on the fly were reported by the Munster Blackwater and tell us that the fish are moving slowly through the system.

It was brilliant to see the great turn out of young anglers for the opening day on the Tolka river. About 80 anglers participated on this well stocked trout river. Seán Halpin aged 6 from Corduff was one of these. This experienced young man (he has been fishing since he was 3 years old !!) was thrilled to have caught his first fish. He was presented with a rod and reel by Josie Mahon, Dublin Angling Initiative, sponsored by Millard Brothers.

Slightly older than Seán was guide Sidney Kennedy who had 8 pike in three hours on the Lee system and all to the fly. One pike weighing 25lb 4ozs fell to a frog hopper lure, which worked perfectly with the frogs spawning.

The weather for the weekend gives Friday night as being very cold and windy over Ulster and North Leinster, perhaps with some sleet and snow showers and a strong East to Southeast wind. Saturday sees little change with South Leinster and Munster seeing some rain.

Tight lines,
Nancy Hearne
