Last week Boat-Angling -Ireland.com regulars Congereel and Rooster76 enjoyed some good tope fishing in Lough Swilly…

A day at Dunaff

Crew: Wilks, Harry, Phillip and myself.
Duration: 8.30-4.30
Tide: low water at 12.30
Weather: Sunny with cool easterly breeze
Bait: mackerel
Rigs: Animal rigs and other tangly ones
Results: lesser spotted dogfish,red and tub gurnards, spurdogs, mackerel, thornback ray and tope

With the weather looking good it was off to Dunaff for the day. Wwe managed to leave the marina on time today after numerous warnings to Harry that if he was not on time he would be left high and dry. We stopped at the cages for mackerel, but none were to be had there so on to the hole at Knockalla where we got enough there for the day.

Onward to Dunaff and let the games begin…  …first in was Harry with a triple shot of dogs. Fishing was fairly steady with the animal rigs accounting for quite a few spurdogs, dogfish and gurnards. Then something more substantial took mine. I had a fair idea it was a tope but never thought we could land it. Ten minutes later and thanks to Harry’s tailing skills he was aboard. Now Harry, as you may know from previous exploits, has never caught a tope  so we set him up for the trophey shot.

On with the fishing and Phillip had a double shot of spurs and lsd. You may find this hard to believe but both these fish were firsts for a man who’s angling career spans more than 30 years. Where has he been fishing? Not much else for the rest of the day so it was back to the marina and the watering hole to mull over the days crack

We fished on Monday with a few macks left from Sunday. We set out early and the anchor was deployed and we were ready for action around 6.15.
Ten minutes in and I had my first run of the year.15 seconds later, I had my first dropped run of the year…

Shorly after that Wilks had a run. After a good wee scrap from the senior citizan  he had a fine tope on the deck, brought onboard by Bertie with little fuss. It was too heavy for Wilky too get a photo so I took his place for the trophy shot.

We weighed him in the sling and he came in at a fine 38-40 lb. I am sure it wasn’t too far away from that. Bertie then got in the action and decided to release his by the side of the boat, another good tope.

Things where very hectic all evening with myself and Wilky missing two good runs. That was one of the best tope runs I have had so far. It stripped plenty of line and felt really good but after 3-4 minutes it was gone  I was starting to think am going be the new Gareth (cannae catch a tope)?  Bertie got in the action again and released expertly at the side of the boat.

I then had good take on the rod and after several seconds  this dose came up… Not what I was looking for but a decent thornie.

With half an hour left away my reel went again.  This time it felt good and after a great run and 5 minutes of battle I had my first tope of 2012.  Bertie did the lifting again and she was in and out of “Shazza“in seconds. I had to get the trophy shot to stop the guilt from sitting with Wilky’s tope.

A fine evenings action for a few hours and a big thank you to the skipper for the trip. Gareth…..you should have been out lad! I would have let you bring one of mine in! Great to see so many tope up the lough and with great weather, very hard to beat.

26LBS PIKE FROM OWEL. Mullingar Angler Philip Keena rattled the scales last weekend on Owel, and boated a huge pike of 26lbs. Philip fished Owel in very calm condition on Friday June 1st, and in recent weeks he has produced some cracking pike.

Courtmacsherry Angling News

Charter skipper Mark Gannon reports on the deep sea fishing for his clients fishing on his two charter boats in the past week at Courtmacsherry.

Specimen Ling

The weather has been poor but the fishing off Courtmacsherry has been very good the last few weeks.  The Pollack fishing has produced some fish near the specimen weight with several fish over the 10 lb. mark, Ling to specimen weight off the inshore wrecks and inshore reefs producing ling to 20 lb, cod to 14 lb. with plenty medium cod caught on baited feathers on rough ground, coalfish, dogfish, bullhuss, conger to 30 lb., pouting, wrasse and mackerel were plentiful.  On the 5th June, Rob Kengen hooked into a Common Skate 3 hrs later and after 5 dives in 45 metres of water we had the fish beside the boat but with only a 50 lb. mono trace, it parted before we were able to get it gaffed and onboard for tagging.  The fish fought so hard due to the fact that the hook was into its wing,  approx weight was 190 lb.  Paddy McKeown landed a skate yesterday the 6th,  approx weight 40 lb.  We also caught conger, ling, cod, pollack, bullhuss, dogfish, pouting, whiting, coalfish and mackerel with quite a variety on the same mark.  Fishing in the Estuary has been quiet due to the closed season for Bass, but several good mullet were landed off the pontoon and pier area.  Sandeels are plentiful in the Estuary so I think there are plenty of bass around for when the season opens,

Tommy Buggy from Kilkenny was fishing the Midland Region this week, and hooked up with some small pike on the fly. The bigger pike seem to be reluctant to come on board, on the day, so he decided to lash out a few lures and see what happens. As soon as he started Jerk Bait fishing, some super Perch showed an interest in his colorful lures. Pictured is Tommy with one of his beautiful coloured Perch.

Cork and Kerry salmon fisheries report

Eileen Carroll Murphy reports on the salmon fishing on many of the Cork and Kerry salmon fisheries.

KILLARNEY LAKES AND LOUGH LEANE

2 salmon of 8 lb. each, another two salmon landed weighing 6.5 lb. and 5 lb.  all landed trolling by local anglers.

FLESK RIVER

2 salmon weighing 5 lb. each, one caught by a local angler on a worm and the other fish was caught on a flying C by a Cork angler.

RIVER LAUNE BEATS 1 AND 2

1 salmon of 5 lb. caught spinning by a local angler.  1 salmon of 6 lb. caught on Johnston’s fishery on a fly by a tourist angler.

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 4th June, the water was happily back up to 1.5 feet on the on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear.  Lovely water for all methods after the good fall of rain and more expected.

With the fresh water on Sunday there was some news of fish being met lost and caught.  Jim Flinders was one of the lucky anglers who had his first fish of the year after some close encounters during the past two weeks.

Some anglers are still having good sport with sea trout who are being caught on small spinning baits or on trout flies fished in the evening.

The fish are being met in Johnston’s, Paul Connors and John Breens. Hearing news of four fish lost on Paul Connors / John Breen’s yesterday.

There were five salmon reported for the week.

Beat 3:

Well done to Thomas Ward Committee Member from Tralee who had a lovely fish from Beat 3 on Sunday despite low water.  Thomas said this was the only fish he saw in fishing from Beaufort Bridge to Poll Na Halla and back up again.  Surprising to hear that there was low water on Beat 3 but the lake has to fill up first.

RIVER BANDON

10 salmon/grilse landed for the week, salmon averaging 8 lb. each and grilse averaging 2.5 lb. to 4 lb. each caught by local anglers using various methods.  Good numbers of sea trout reported coming into the system.

RIVER LEE

A total of 30 fish caught, (20 salmon, averaging 7 lb. to 10 lb. and 10 grilse averaging 2.5 lb. to 5 lb.), mostly landed by local anglers, all methods used.

RIVER ILEN, RIVER COOMHOLA AND OUVANE RIVER

Ilen river –           13 fish best fish 10.5 lb. on a flying “C” by a day ticket angler.

 

Coomhola river –           2 fish, first fish of the year fell to young local angler Kevin Holland 6.5 lb. on worms.

 

Ouvane river –                5 fish best fish 7.5 lb. on worms by a local angler.

 

Weather Warning – heavy rains and gales forecast

Rainfall warning

Today, Thursday, rainfall accumulations of 25 to 45mm will occur widely in Leinster and Ulster. In Connaught and Munster higher accumulations of 35 to 60mm will occur, and some mountainous regions in these provinces are likely to record 60 to 90mm.

Strong winds will be a feature of today’s weather also. East to northeast winds will reach gale force for a time in parts of Leinster and Ulster. In many parts of Connaught and Munster, north to northwest gales will occur by afternoon and gusts as high as 110 km/hr may be experienced locally, especially coastal locations.

Additionally, any coastal areas experiencing onshore winds around times of high tide will be prone to overtopping by the sea.

Gale warning

Easterly gales or strong gales developing this morning on all coasts and on the Irish Sea; northerly gales or strong gales developing on western and southern coasts this afternoon, with winds possibly reaching storm force later between Roche’s Point and Slyne Head.

Tues June 5th and Ian and Glenda Powell report from the Blackwater – The upper & lower river were continuing to fall slowly throughout the day. The lower river was down to 0.50m by late evening. The upper river was just starting to rise a bit again this evening @ 19.00. The clarity was about 1½-2 feet throughout. There were 2 fish of 5 & 7lb caught on 2 different beats on the upper river & quite a lot of fish were seen moving through the Castletownroche beats. There were some quite heavy showers in the middle/upper catchment during the day so we’ll see in the morning if these have any effect on the river.

Weds June 6th – Just 10 rods fished today – 6th. 11 fish to 10.3lb were taken – all on our upper beats. 6 fell to spinner, 4 to fly & 1 to worms. Two young anglers caught their First Ever Salmon today. Tommy Daly (14 years)with a 4.5lb. on worms on Ballincurrig and Adam Watkinson (UK) 16 years old. 5.5lb. on spinner on Carrig.

The best Fish of the Day. 10.3lb taken by Jim Shanahan on fly on Bridgetown.

The total for June is already 19 fish & the Season to Date is 76.

Fort William Estate Fishery

5/6/12 Water levels are dropping back once again after the recent rise. It peaked just over 1.5 meters on Sunday and clarity is poor enough with 1ft visability. Today was a good start even in this dirty water with 2 fish landed. Tim James from the U.k. landed a nice fish of 8lbs off the Glenmore beat on spinner, while Mick Brown also landed a fish of 5lbs off Glenmore. Forecast for the coming week is poor so we can only wait and see what the water levels will do.

Fishhunt with Philip Maher

05/06/12 The Blackwater rose a few feet after the heavy rain Saturday. It put even the upper reaches out of order. Thankfully it is dropping as fast as it came up. If this continues I would expect a good days fishing on the beats above Mallow as early as tomorrow (5/6/12).

If you are venturing out remember that we are still offering day permits for as little as €40 per day on our 23 beats. My advice is a skagit or shooting head line with a 10’ T11 poly leader and a 2-3 inch copper or tungsten tube fly like a flood buster or a flame thrower should do the business.

MOORING CLOSURES AND NAVIGATION RESTRICTIONS ADVANCE NOTICE – 2nd July to 13th July 2012

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and users of the Shannon Navigation of mooring closures and navigation restrictions in Lough Key  from Monday 2nd to Friday 13th July 2012.

Mooring Closures

Please note that Lough Key Forest Park including amenities, activities and moorings will be closed to all visitors during this time to facilitate an international camp hosted by the Irish Girl Guides and in the interest of  marine safety.

1) Drummans Island moorings

2) Fixed concrete moorings adjacent to the tree walk

3)  New floating moorings at the park building

Navigation restrictions

4pm Monday 2nd July to 9am Friday 13th July 2012

Navigation restrictions will also be in place throughout the closure with an exclusion zone for all craft extending into the bay adjacent to the forest park.  See area hatched in red below. No craft will be permitted to enter the exclusion zone which starts at the navigation point between Drummans Island and Orchard Island on Lough Key and will extend to the south and into the park bay.

Anglers net 35 trout in Kilcormac – Offaly Express

THE annual All-Ireland Trout Angling Competition for anglers with special needs took place at Loch an Dochais, Kilcormac on Sunday, May 27.

Over twenty anglers from seven different counties took part. The weather was beautiful, competition was very keen and a very good catch was recorded. A catch of thirty-five trout was weighed in.

The results were; 1st and winner of the Mary Robinson Perpetual Trophy Jim Houlihan representing Tipperary with a catch of four trout weighing 9.25lbs. In 2nd place was local man Rodge Molloy with a catch of four trout weighing 6.3lbs. Third place went to Darragh Kelly with a catch of four trout weighing 6lbs.

Lough Corrib Quieter After Mayfly Season

Fishing activity on Lough Corrib has slowed down a lot over the last week following the heatwave of last week, which signalled the end of the big mayfly hatches. Some mayfly are still hatching off in sporadic hatches, and fish are coming up to these when they occur. Most anglers are concentrating on evening fishing, and sticking to their local bays, or short drifts over the shallows.

Tommy Greham and boatman Jimmy Acton had a very productive evening dapping in the Greenfields bay area, with Tommy boating 3 fish of 9lbs, the best being 5lbs. Frank Reilly spent 2 evenings flyfishing, landing 4 fish for his efforts, ranging from 1.5lbs to 3.5lbs.  Darragh Lynch from Headford had 4 fish for one evening’s fishing, averaging 1.5lbs, all released.

The picture is much the same on the western shore of the lake, with only a handful of anglers taking the opportunity to enjoy the long evenings on the lake.  Those who take up the chance are having moderate success with one to two fish being the average catch.
