Salmon at Kylemore Abbey

Nigel Rush reports that Kylemore Abbey Fishery enjoyed more success over the last few days, with Colm  Gallagher landing his first Dawros fish, a grilse of 3lbs from the Lunch Pool, and Hugh Maguire landed a 6lbs fish off the Middle River, both fish taken on the Kylemore Killer pattern. Michael Gallagher landed a 4.5lbs fish from Siddies Pool on the Lower River, and had another fish of 4.25lbs the following day. Neil Spellacy landed 2 fish, both approx. 3.5lbs, from Lavelle’s Pools on the Lower River, both taken on a Galway Black and Yellow fly.

Water levels are dropping away again after last week’s heavy rain, but a lot of fish have been seen in the river, with good numbers of sea trout also starting to appear, although fishing effort on the lakes has been very low so far.

Erriff Fishery

Despite low water, the Erriff Fishery produced 2 fish over the last week, the first fish of 6lbs 6oz was caught on the 4th by Deirdre Herbert from Dublin, and was taken on a shrimp fly from the high bank on Doyle’s Pool on Beat 6. It was Deirdre’s first ever salmon, and one she won’t forget! Paul Micheals from the USA also fished Beat 6 on Wednesday the 6th, and landed the first grilse of the season, a fresh fish about 3.5lbs, taken on a Cascade fly from Doyle’s again.
Rain since the weekend has brought levels up, and with very heavy rain forecast for the next couple of days the Erriff should get a nice flood that will hopefully bring a few more fish into the river. There is good availability in the lodge and on the river over the next few weeks.
A casting and flyfishing course for ladies will take place from Thursday the 5th to Sunday the 8th of July, led by qualified casting instructor mark Corps. All accommodation and meals are included, as well as tuition in all aspects of flyfishing and salmon fishing, and plenty of time on the river to practise the skills acquired. The cost for 3 nights B&B, lunch and dinner, and fishing tuition is €500 per participant. Partners can stay for €300, and may fish the river on the other beats for free. Great salmon fishing at Galway Fishery

Fishing conditions this week could not have been much better, with one open sluice gate providing perfect water levels for flyfishing. Good runs of fish continued, and the fishery produced the best week of the season to date, with 28 salmon landed, including 26 to the fly. Increasing numbers of grilse were reported, as well as some great spring salmon.

Eamon power from Waterford landed a 6.5lbs fish on fly, while Ciaran Ward from Dublin had a great day, catching 3 salmon from 4lsb to 10.5lbs, also on fly. Clare man Eddie Corry took a 7lbs fish on fly, while Cork angler John Moore had 2 nice grilse on fly. Father and son Gus and John Murphy from Clare spent a day together while John was home on holiday from the US, and both had a day to remember, catching identical salmon of 10lbs each on fly. Swiss visitor Johan Wetter landed a nice 8.5lbs fish on fly, while Dublin man Gerard Keane, who lives in the US now, enjoyed his visit back to Ireland by landing his first ever salmon on fly, a nice fish of 6.5lbs. Dublin angler Dermot Quinlan landed an 8lbs fish on shrimp, and local angler Michael Barry took a 7-pounder on fly, while local man Simon Lenihan had a 6.5lbs fish on fly. Northern Irish angler had a great time during his visit to Galway, landing 4 fish to 7lbs, all on fly. Tom Beecher from Cork had a 7lbs fish on fly, and fellow Cork man Jim McEvoy had a fine 12.5lbs fish, also on fly. Catch of the week, though, goes to young angler Aidan Twomey from Waterford, who landed a cracking 15lbs silver springer on the fly.

Fishing conditions are absolutely perfect at the moment, and should not be too adversely affected by the forecast rain, as the lake is very low at the moment and should absorb the extra water. Fishing prospects for the coming weeks in Galway are excellent.

Skate keep spurdogs off Red Bay feeding grounds but more packs expected

Hamish Currie, skipper of Predator II, reports:

Last week saw us hunting skate, cod and spurdogs. The spurdogs didn’t play ball as there were a few skate on the ground. Some nice cod were also taken.

The best cod was caught by Andy Logan from Carrick Fergus specimen hunters club.  His wee brother Regi managed to better this with a fine male skate. Spurs are now moving up the channel and will be in large packs inside the next fortnight. Venue for this session was 9km south east of Red Bay.

Successful Belmullet Sea Angling Competition

Belmullet Sea Angling Club Competition results:

Over 20 anglers took part in this year’s Open Boat International, a two day competition held over the 2nd and 3rd of June. Weather conditions were favourable and most anglers enjoyed excellent fishing over both days. There were over sixteen different species of fish landed, including pollack, coalfish, cod,  haddock, dogfish, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, grey gurnard, red gurnard, tub gurnard, whiting, dab, flounder, ling and thornback ray.

Results were as follows:

1st Greatest Variety Over 2 Days: Anthony Masterson, Belmullet S.A.C.

2nd Greatest Variety Over 2 Days:  Peter Coyne, Killala Bay S.A.C.  

3rd Greatest Variety Over 2 Days Out Of State: Paul Slater, NI

1st & 2nd Greatest Variety Junior Anglers: Matthew Walsh & Robert Barrett, Belmullet 

Heaviest Fish Saturday: Paul Slater, NI (Ling 14.75 lbs.)

Heaviest Fish Sunday: Josie Barrett, Killala (Pollack 7.65lbs.)

Murrough patterns working on Lough Arrow, while dry Wulffs work best on Conn and Cullin.

At Pontoon Bridge Hotel, Mary F, Newman, USA, had 5 trout, best at 1.5 lbs., while Harry Rechtfeld, Switzerland boated 11 fish, best at 2 lbs.  From Murphy’s Boat Hire, Cloghans, Barry Graham and Ned Tyrell, Offally had four trout each, best at 2 lb.

Fishing out of Cloghans, Roy Jones, Wales caught 2 trout on dry Wulffs, best at 1.5 lbs. Cloonamoyne Fishery also reported some good results: Chris and Amy Kenny-Riches, USA had 28 trout over 3 days, best at 1.75 lbs. all on dry Grey and Yellow Wullfs. Reverend John Flynn & family, Knockmore boated 44 fish over 5 days, best at 1.25 lbs. all on dry Olives, while John McAleese and Michael Gill, Dublin caught 32 trout over 3 days, best at 2 lbs. on wet flies and the dap.

During the week the Annual Garda Competition was fished with 40 anglers taking part in the event. Results were as follows:

1st Declan Conlon, Kildare, 3 trout, 3.21 lbs.

2nd Stephen Neylon, Dublin, 3 trout, 3.12 lbs.

3rd Jim Caden, Ballina, 3 trout, 3.01 lbs.

Best retired angler: Tom McMahon, Dublin, 3 trout 3.12 lbs.

Heaviest fish: Declan Conlon, Kildare, 2.3 lbs.

Lough Conn & Cullin Anglers Association held their two day Whit Weekend Competition. Eighty-five anglers caught 62 trout totalling 32.46 kg. Results were as follows:

1st Martin Ferrick, Ballinrobe, 6 trout, 3.030 kg

2nd John Purtill, Tipperary, 3 trout, 1.710 kg

3rd Martin Cooper, Dundalk, 3 trout, 1.460 kg

4th Willie Burke, Tipperary, 3 trout, 1.440 kg

5th John Walsh, Cloghans, 2 trout, 1.360 kg

Heaviest fish: Gary Dawson, NI, 1.045 kg

Lough Arrow

Anglers who ventured out on Lough Arrow during the week were rewarded with some fine catches.  Most of the action took place late in the evenings. Maurice Whiteman, Northern Ireland, had four trout, heaviest at 4.5 lbs., while local angler Brian Kelly reported a fine 3.5 lbs. fish. All fish were caught on Murrough patterns.

Coarse anglers find Cavan venues produing good catches

The mixed weather over the last few weeks has undoubtedly effected coarse angling up and down the country, however some water’s in Cavan have been producing quite well.

Over the last weekend in 26th and 27th May I picked up 16 bream, during two night sessions, which saw the fish come on to feed between the hours of 1 am and 4 am, the stamp was around 3 – 4 lb. However, due to the shallow water in front of us, and the horrific heat during the day, we didn’t use keep net’s as fish safety should be paramount no matter what you catch.

While I was chasing Bream however John Rigney was out further west searching for tench. Fishing on the lift method he secured 20 tench for 74lb , and missed one.

Of course not wanting to be out done by John, I set off my self to another location in Cavan for the bank holiday weekend. I  raked and pre-baited on Saturday and was ready for Sunday evening. 5:30pm saw me ready for the off. It was still quite bright out and the going was slow to start with the first tench coming to the net at 7 pm. From then on it was non stop however, with a total or 15 tench in the net, and 5 misses I weighted up to 42 lb, and safely saw each and every fish back to the water.

Not content with 15 I headed back out again for an early start, 4:30am, knowing the sun would be up soon, unfortunately the morning session wasn’t quite as successful, however I did anticipate this due to the brightness, and finished up with 6 tench and a Bream for 15 lb.

Not a bad session after all.

Ballisodare fishing well with 7 lb salmon for 3 local anglers

Despite extremely low water levels anglers still enjoyed good sport on the Ballisodare Fishery, with a total of 67 salmon caught and 35 of these being released. Most of the fish averaged 5 lbs. Amongst the successful anglers were local angler, Dermot Glennon (7 lbs. on prawn, released), Tom Mulholland, Northern Ireland (7 lbs. on an Ally’s Shrimp), and John Corcoran, Roscommon (7 lbs. on a Willie Gunn).

Salmon slow to take on Lough Beltra & Newport River this week

Lough Beltra & Newport River
Fishing was somewhat slow for the week with only two salmon caught on the Newport House side of Lough Beltra.  David Eddis had an 8 lbs. salmon, while Cameron Brant caught one at 7.5 lbs. David Eddis was also successful on the Newport River, where he landed a 6.5 lbs. fish. Also on the river, Ian Conn had a five pounder. Most successful flies were Green Peter and Cascade Shrimp.
