Total Flyfishing on Carton House lake and Ryewater

Cartons stocked lake is fishing well as above photo will testify to.  With the recent warm spell surface activity has increased and trout have been fooled on patterns such as Griffiths Gnat and other non descript flies.

The Rye Water is running very low at present and no doubt would benefit from a bit of colour in the water as trout are quite spooky in the current conditions.  However a stealthy approach, fishing a little back from the bank and keeping wading to a minimum can result in a successful outing with Pheasant Tail Nymphs being very productive.

Visiting anglers last week included John Buckley of Irish Angler fame and Steve Cullen, editor of Total Fly-fishing who enjoyed great fishing on both the stocked lake and on the Rye Water – The Rye itself fishing its socks off during the last hour of the evening rise with hatches of Iron Blues, Sedges and Black Gnats in abundance.

Weather sub tropical on Corrib, but fishing not sub-parr

The west of Ireland bathed in sub-tropical conditions over the last few days, with the temperature gauge reaching 28 degrees on several days. The hot weather has probably brought mayfly hatches to a gradual finish, after what was generally reckoned to the best mayfly season for many years. Despite cold northerly winds for much of the period, mayfly hatches were very prolific, and angling was excellent for the most part, with some exceptional catches reported.

Eamon Walsh reports that the bright sunshine and warm weather threw up a diverse week from a trout anglers point of view. Certain areas of the lake had rich pickings for those brave enough to battle the sunshine . The best of the fishing was enjoyed at the beginning of the week, prior to the temperatures rising, with some large hatches of mayfly in some areas.

Enda Browne had 2 nice fish in the early days of the week on dry mayfly, Enda also landed a 10.5lbs pike to the same fly pattern!  Martin Murphy had 2 fish, the best of which was 2lbs, on the natural mayfly while fishing in the Greenfields area. Frank and Joe Kilfoyle had 4 trout for 6.5lbs to wet fly also in the Greenfields area.  Meanwhile, the David Williams party had 11 trout over 3 days, most were released, including a nice fish of 3.5lbs while fishing out of Salthouse Bay near Cross.

Over the weekend there was still plenty of fly life on the water but trout activity had slowed dramatically, with 40 anglers recording a total of 9 trout in the annual Cornamona Mayfly competition on Sunday.  Gerry McDonald took first place as well as heaviest fish, with 2 fine trout.

Tommy Kelly reports that fishing in the Oughterard area and on the lower lake is still providing plenty of activity for anglers.  The Dublin Amateur Dapping Society had a few great days based out of  Lakeland Angling Center, Eden Brophy, Peter Bragain and Peter Kidney each had 9 fish, and David Richards had 5.  Noel Kerins and Paddy Curran from Banagher had 8 trout also fishing from Lakelands.

Two visiting French anglers, Gabby Bonnaud and Gerald Ratu, clamed to have their best year yet, with 38 trout, the best of which was 3.5lbs, for a week’s fishing at Corrib Wave house, Oughterard.

Corrib Wave can be contacted on 091 552147 or on www.corribwave.com

At Currarevagh House, Paul Coridia and a friend had 14 trout for 4 days, their best day being Wednesday when they boated 9 trout for an estimated 15lbs.  Many of these trout were caught in bays which in recent years were unfishable due to the Lagarosiphon Major infestation, but since the removal and covering program was introduced these bays have once again become a hive of activity for trout and consequently anglers.

Currarevagh House is at 091 552312 or online at www.currarevagh.com

At Ardnasillagh Lodge, Basil Shields and Tom Coyle had some excellent fishing, to the extent that both hooked fish of over 7 and 5 lbs at the same time on one outing.  Joe Murphy also had 4 fish for one day the best being of 4.5lbs.

Basil Shields can be contacted on 091 552550 for guiding and accommodation.

As the mayfly trout activity may have slowed during the day in some areas, anglers may be more likely to have success with some evening fishing as the sun sets and temperatures drop back. Anglers might be encouraged to try spent mayfly or sedge pattern to lure trout to the surface.  A lot of anglers are engaging in trolling for ferox trout during the fine weather to great success.

Salmon fishing is also worth a try during this period as more are reported to be seen in the lake. It is important to remember that a licence is needed when fishing for salmon, any salmon caught and kept must be tagged and details entered into the anglers log book.  A daily bag limit of 3 salmon is in operation from the 12th of May to 31st of August.  Licenses can be purchased on line at: www.salmonlicences.ie

Tomi Kurman from the Corrib Predator Team emailed a couple of photos from recent trips out on the lake after pike. Spring is a great time to target big pike as they are hungry after spawning, and while they are not as heavy as later on in the year, they give great sport. Flyfishing is proving very successful at the moment, and all of the clients have had personal bests on their recent trips, including a fine fish of 111cm for Polish angler Piotr.

The Second round of the Waterway’s Ireland NCFFI Irish Team Qualifiers took place over the weekend 19/20 May on the Inniscara Lake in Cork.  The event was extremely well supported with a record turnout of 33 anglers fishing the Float event on the Saturday and 27 anglers fishing the Feeder event on the Sunday. The venue was used for practice on the Friday with 18 anglers fishing the venue in good weather conditions.

The Feeder Qualifier which will be used to select the Feeder team for the World Championships in South Africa in 2013, was fished on the same stretches of the river on the Sunday. Again the catches were very good with a total of 269kgs of fish caught by the 27 anglers.

The Rooves Bay section proved to be the place to draw with David Herron (Erne Anglers) and Tommy Lawton (Fermoy and District AC) both catching 22.700kgs of mainly Skimmers, in third place was Francis McGoldrick (Anglers Rest AC) also with a 22.050kgs weight.

French anglers pleased with their catch of Pike in Leitrim

Gortinty Lake

Last week 6 French Anglers guided by Fabien Millet from Lyon and staying at McGuires Cottages in Drumshanbo had great fishing on Gortinty Lake near Drumsna Co Leitrim. In all they had 68 pike for the week the best of which was 1.19m all the fish were returned alive – nice fishing and all went back to Lyon very pleased with the weather and the pike fishing.

River Shannon Longford

Two Dutch journalists staying in Longford last week had very good pike fishing with flies on River Shannon.

Creenagh Lake

Creenagh lake produced some good Tench fishing during the past week. Two Dublin anglers had a good days fishing netting 30 beautiful tench.

Finn Lough Strokestown

Its difficult to be sure but it would seem as if the tench in Finn lough havent spawned yet and local Longford anglers had great bags of tench from this lake during the week.

Strule still producing sport in low flows

Thomas on the Strule with a small trout

Although water levels are very low and salmon aren’t a prospect yet the trout can still provide an excellent days sport.  With the high temperatures daytime trout are to be found in the washing machine of the pools busy grubbing and nymphing.

Thomas on the Strule with a small trout

Even in low flows it takes nymphs with quite a bit of ballast to get them into the feeding zone.  Brian Russell fished the river with son Thomas on Wednesday 30th and found plenty of trout willing to take nymphs presented both straight through and suspended under a dryfly.  Evening fishing in June is a fantastic experience on this system with heavy hatches of Blue wings and sedges.

Evening and early mornings order of day on Lagan, Cusher, Callan and Bann

Brown trout from the River Callan
Brown trout from the River Callan

The warm temperatures have made daytime fishing very frustrating on these rivers over the last week.  However  anglers prepared to don knee pads and fish fine and far off with a single nymph on  a French leader can winkle out a few fish per run.

The Callan in particular is yielding higher quantities of fish albeit in the main they are averaging 20 cm.  Chris Mills got some nymphing tuition from local guide Brian Russell and landed plenty of trout to small drab nymphs on the Callan on Thursday 31st.  The evening  fishing is a different story with the Lagan in particular yielding some fine fish up to the 44cm mark being caught on the edge of dark.  Generally there are some blue wings on the go with small dark sedges and midge attracting the trout’s attention.  Best chance of success on the Cusher tends to be early morning when the better fish can be found mopping up midge.

Anglers scarce during the day around Mullingar as fish feed in evenings

Lough Ennell:

Over the past week Ennell was at its best…..warm weather, great hatches of May fly and some remarkable trout fishing to the Spent in particular. In fact the Ennell anglers are saying that it was the best hatch of may fly in at least 20 years but in true Ennell fashion the tout were scarce and reluctant to get involved in any feeding patterns with the exception of some evenings when there was ferocious activity to the spent like Paul Garvan had one of the evenings with a 3 lb fish while fishing out of Liliput, but generally the lake was slow to sparkle.

Lough Owel:

Once again there has been a good hatch of mayfly on the lake at the back of Tullaghan and down along the ash ditch. Over the last two weeks 216 fish have been reported caught on Owel.  The best results were Greg Long Dublin who had 12 fish best of which was 2lbs, and all were returned to the lake.  Michael Tyvoid Dublin had 8 fish to the may fly best 2¾ which he kept and the rest were returned.

Lough Derravaragh:

Very few Anglers fished Derravaragh last week and it would seem that most had moved to Sheelin or Ennell to be part of the action at those venues  but there was a big hatch of May Fly reported from Derravaragh but nobody fishing…….
