Close encounters of the otter kind – The Mayo News

It had been a year since I had seen an otter. Really seen one, I mean. I know where they live, where they hunt and where they like to eat. Retrospectively, I am surprised that an individual in possession of such knowledge has not stayed out late with the objective of watching them. It is not that I haven’t wanted to; life has a way of sweeping us along on a tide of inconsequence.
I had not gone fishing that night, I had merely taken my fly rod with me – after all, who would go to the lakeside unprepared? The inevitable happened; a trout poked its nose through the ripple to cast that cursed web and out-for-a-walk turned to sneaking along the bank. I knew the fish wasn’t big enough to eat, but I had to have it, to pull it from its home, to look at, to touch, like an unhungry cat with a view of a bird…..The Mayo News….23/05/12…..read the full article….

Local Louth man loses fishing appeal and is ordered to pay costs of Inland Fisheries Ireland – Dundalk Democrat

Inland Fisheries Ireland has won a circuit court case against a man from Co. Louth who appealed a district court case for illegal salmon fishing

The appeal was heard and Mr Smith was ordered to pay two fines totalling e600 and costs of e2,369 to Inland Fisheries Ireland at Dundalk Circuit Court on Friday, May 11 last.

The court heard that Mr Smith was found to be illegally fishing in September 2010.  Fisheries officers Thomas Duffy, Dermot Wynne and Ronan O’Brien from the Dundalk district apprehended him with a fixed net at the shores of Annagassan, which is the tidal section of the Dee and Glyde rivers, and initiated court proceedings……Dundalk Democrat……23/05/12…..read full article…..

A disappointing hunt for tope in Red Bay, but there's always next time!

Tope

Last week Hamish Currie went a wee tad south of red bay in their hunt for tope, no bull Huss were present or spur dogs but they did encounter a few small tope.  Nothing to get exited over but alas a really big tope was lost.  After a 10 minute scrap  she decided to throw the hook.  Ah well,  there is always the next time!   This week the Predator II will target them again to see if numbers have increased.

River Lee salmon fit for a queen – Irish Examiner

As you’re reading this, it’s quite possible Queen Elizabeth II is tucking into a 10lb salmon freshly caught on the River Lee.

English Market fishmonger Pat O’Connell purchased the salmon minutes after it was caught last Thursday, and immediately decided to send it to the queen to mark the first anniversary of her visit to Cork.

“I rang up Buckingham Palace and asked if her majesty would like it. They told me yes and I got UPS to courier it over,” said Mr O’Connell.

He was told the fish arrived at Windsor Castle yesterday morning. ….Irish Examiner……19/05/12……read full article……

Martin Perryman emerges as winner of Cobh Light Lines Competition

Having just completed the April Light Line competition we were in a position to collate the results of all 5 light line competitions of the winter 2011/12 season to determine who was the overall winner. What a close run series it turned out to be!!!

Anglers were awarded points for their placings in each individual competition. If they finished 1st they were awarded 1 point; if second, then 2 points; third, 3 points; and so on down the line. If an angler missed a competition then they were automatically given 35 points. The best results from 4 comps out of 5 counted so that meant the worst result could be dropped. After all the points were posted, the calculations done, and the placings organised a clear picture emerged. There was still no separating the top two anglers. Martin Perryman and John Dennehy were both level at the top with 8 points apiece.

To determine the winner the committee decided to refer back to numbers of fish caught in the four competitions that gave the anglers qualifying points. When this was done Martin Perryman emerged the clear winner with 362 fish as compared to John with 278 fish. Well done Martin!!! Well done to John aswell!!! It couldn’t been any closer. What a great competition!

Many thanks to all the anglers who took part! We hope to see you all again for next winter’s series.

Young people taking part in FAW learned how to fish at an event organised by the Dublin Angling Initiative (DAI).  A number of these events took place during the week at Aughrim, Angling For All facility in Co. Wicklow. A total of 101 teenagers participated in these days which consisted of talks in their school and a hands on fishing day.  The participants were given tuition by IFI, Blackrock staff  and Dublin Angling Initiative tutors. More than 90% of these youngsters experienced fishing for the first time. They learned how to tie fishing knots, how to cast, play and land a fish safely and release their catch. More than 100 hard fighting rainbow trout were caught, these fish were kindly donated to the fishery in support of our event by IDAS Fish Rearing facility in Wicklow.

The Dublin Angling Initiative (DAI) organised an event as part of FAW with the National Sealife Centre in Bray. It involved a fisheries presentation by Jimmy King, IFI, which gave an insight into the importance of our estuaries as nursery areas for angling species. Following refreshments, Brian Cooke gave a presentation and workshop on angling in our estuaries. The evening finished with a tour of the National Sealife Centre. Feedback from the event has been fantastic following a full attendance at the event. Special thanks to Jimmy King, IFI, Brian Cooke, PRO, Irish Federation of Sea Anglers and Pat O’Suilleabhain from the National Sealife Centre.

Wexford Abú – fishing on the river Slaney

May 21st, 2012 : While the fishing slowed down last week, for instance no fish were landed on the Clohamon beat, it was marked by the capture of 2 big fish lower downstream with 15 and 19 lb fish being taken. It would seem that many fish have taken the opportunity presented by the heavy rain in the past weeks to run upstream.

In line with other rivers, while the 2012 run has been small, the quality of fish has been excellent with plenty of fish in the teens of pounds and at least 2 fish of circa 19lbs landed todate.
