A very popular carp fishery. Popular with competition anglers and novices alike. Alway a great chance of a bumper bag here. Friendly staff more than happy to advise beginner anglers. Caters to all sorts of clubs and groups.
It has been a wet week for much of the country, with most areas experiencing between 100% and 245% of average rainfall, but those on the eastern side of the country seem to have escaped the worst of it. Temperatures have remained around normal for the time of year, but it has been quite overcast, with the sun only fleetingly peeping through the cloudline. So, a bit of rain, warmth and a lack of bright sun… sounds like good weather for fishing!
Salmon anglers in particular like a bit of rain to freshen things up in our rivers, and we have some surprisingly positive reports in this week, where the glooom of a difficult early season seems to have been lifted by a good run of grilse (and bigger fish too) on many of our fisheries. In the west of the country, the grilse have arrived in good numbers at Delphi Lodge, and anglers have been enjoying some fine fishing with some notable catches including one angler landing his 500th Delphi salmon! Urs Leibundgut caught his first Delphi salmon in 1993 and has been returning year after year. On the 18th of July this year he notched up his 500th Delphi fish, an impressive feat which wins him this week’s Catch of the Week.
There’s not a whole lot of trout fishing news this week, but Dan O’Neil’s latest River Whispers blog covers a lot of different topics and helps to make up for the lack of other news.
For once, the outlook for the coming days is not too bad…, with a reasonable amount of dry, warm, sunny weather promised. There will be some showers today, which will die out as the day progresses, but a fresh band of showers will cross the country from west to east later in the evening. Saturday should be largely dry albeit with a few heavy showers lurking, with temperatures between 17 and 21°C. It will remain clear on Saturday night, and Sunday will be mostly dry and bright, if a bit hazy, with similar temperatures to Saturday. The start of next week should see warm, humid weather with temperatures in the low to mid 20s with a lot of dry weather. Summer might be here at last…
Water levels in the Moy remained low for most of the week with a reading of 0.19 m on Monday 15th at Ballylahan which rose suddenly to just over 1 m on Saturday evening after much awaited rain finally arrived in the locality. Some fisheries reported good catches for the week particularly at the weekend with the changes in water levels. Over the past week rainfall amounts were above average in Connacht with the Belmullet station recording 50.8 mm of rain. The weather is expected to be mixed over the next seven days with West Connacht forecast to receive 20-25mm of rainfall.

Daithí Ryan reports from Galway, that a very dry month of July made water conditions perfect for the first half of the month, with 1 sluice gate open. Water levels dropped on the 15th of July to half a gate. There was very little water coming over the gates due to the decrease in the northerly winds which made for ideal fishing conditions. The catch total up to the 24th was 180 salmon, including 167 were caught on the fly and 13 on shrimp. The biggest fish weighed in at 9.5lbs and was caught by Brendan O’Connell on the fly half way down the catwalk. The most successful flies were the Garry Dog and Munro Killer, in size 12 or 14.
Junior Success
Among the lucky anglers were Sean Minnock, who landed his first salmon that was a 5lbs bar of silver on the fly on Monday the 8th of July.
Adam Moran – coached by his father Rocky – landed 4 fish the biggest weighing 5lbs. All were caught on the fly over 2 sessions on the 13th and 19th of July.
The fishery has had a special offer for young rods this year with discounted evening fishing to encourage young anglers into the sport, and it is great to see the future salmon anglers honing their skills.
The 11th of July was the best day with 13 fish landed, all but 1 to the fly. Galway Weir veteran Louis Brennan had a nice fish on the shrimp. Noel Power had 2 great fish, one weighing in at 9.4lbs and the other at 9lbs. On the 12th Eoin Cosgrove had 2 fish in no time at all, while Gary Rogers also had 2 landed very shortly after. On the 20th regular Austrian visitor Tobias Stern had a stunning fresh fish of 9.4 lbs caught on a Silver Rat. Elena Hamill had a beautiful fish of 7lbs on the 17th caught on a Red Francis. On The 21st top lady angler Margaret Downes had a stunning bar of silver weighing in at 5lbs caught on the fly while fishing off the Hill.
RIP Tosh
Everyone At the Galway Fishery would like to remember Tosh Kellett a regular angler who sadly passed away last week. We think of his family and friends in these tough times.

After last year’s very poor season for salmon fishing, anglers on the River Suir have reported a marked improvement this year, particularly in early July.
High water levels had an adverse effect on wading conditions early in the season, restricting access for fly anglers, but there were still some very good salmon running, with reported catches of well-conditioned fish in the 12lb to 16lb size range.
There was a good build-up of salmon in Upper Suir estuary in early June and a mini flood tempted those fish in from the tide to the freshwater sections; however, due to an inundation of moss lifting from the riverbed – known locally as Daubiins – angling was practically impossible. When the moss ‘floss’ cleared in mid-June, fishing improved considerably, and this improvement continued into mid-July when another build-up of salmon in the upper estuary occurred. Fish entering the estuary were monitored by IFI throughout the season, with regular boat patrols in the tidal waters until the fish moved upstream.
When they did move through, good numbers of salmon between 10lb to 16lb and grilse of 3lb to 5lb were caught and released, with plenty of others met briefly by anglers but evading the landing net! Some impressive fish have been landed already this season though, including twelve specimens recorded in the 20lb to 25lb range.

Mid July onwards saw a drop in numbers of larger fish in the estuary with just small numbers of grilse running. The fish that entered the river during June and July are now spread out over entire catchment waiting for what anglers hope will be an excellent spawning season.
For what remains of the angling season, the months of August and September have been very poor months for anglers in the last number of years, with the traditional backend salmon – known locally as ‘Blackberry’ salmon – not appearing in almost a decade. Suir anglers are crossing their fingers and toes in the hope that those fish will make a reappearance this year.
The Suir, which is 184km in length with a fluvial salmonid habitat of just under 9 million square metres, is Ireland’s largest salmon river with a conservation limit of over 14,000 salmon. The river has been catch and release since 2013 and these regulations are strictly enforced by IFI. It is estimated by clubs on the Suir that over 90% of Suir salmon anglers prefer to fly fish, with smaller hook sizes and in-river wading helping to keep fish wet during the unhooking process and further improving salmon conservation on the river.
While fishing in some areas of Clonmel Town and Carrick on Suir Town is considered to be free fishing, fishing is strictly permit only on club waters where Gardai and court appointed waterkeepers strictly enforce public order issues and trespass along the Suir catchment.
Mackerel have been plentiful enough this week, according to skipper Luke Aston, who reckons it is the best bait for predators, large and small.
Megrim, caught on fresh mackerel
Something a bit buigger than megrim was on the agenda earlier this week, when despite lively fresh conditions, a drift with the chum out produced 6 good blue shark to the boat, as well as 2 porbeagles.
A nice blue showing its fantastic colours
Yesterday was a fresher day again,, making for a shorter trip as the weather sent them packing back inshore. But there was a grest sign of sharks, with takes from blues shortly after putting out the rubby dubby. Indeed it wasn’t long before there were sharks biting the bucket! There were also plenty of smaller fish feeding on the bottom and up.
Another bluePollack were feeding hard

Like many rivers around the country, Delphi experienced slow fishing for much of the spring, compounded by low water for much of May and June. The grilse run may have been late, but it finally arrived and in good numbers too. Fishery manager David McEvoy says the fishing has been excellent since then. Read on for David’s update…
My last update was on the 12th of June, at which stage we had 1 Grilse landed. Water levels at the time were low, with the gauge at 10 and any rain we did get ran off very quickly; because the system was so low. We were like a pure spate system, until we got our first serious flood since April. We had over 50mms of rain on the 21st and 22nd of June, which basically filled up the reservoirs again and this has kept us going ton date. Total rainfall for the June was 157.7mms (6.2”). So, from the 12th to the end of June we landed another 49 fish.
3 of these were landed on the 14th, Seamus O’Neill having 2 Grilse off Finlough and Crionna Creagh having a fish of 4lbs9ozs from the Rock Pool. There were 15 landed in week 25, with Seamus O’Neill and Philip McGarrity landing 2 each and Kevin Finegan, Paul Smyth and the Byrne brothers all having 1 each. Ken O’Farrell’s Week 25 record of never blanking is still intact and there were 3 First Ever Salmon, with Paul Lakin (England), Ken Ferris (Oughterard) and Kevin Asplund from the US had his first and second.
Our Week 26 regular team once again had lovely conditions and they also managed to land 24 fish. Good numbers of fish were being seen throughout the system. Urs had 8, Benni 5, Werner and Yvonne 3 each, Ralph 2, Julie, Mattias and Peter all had 1 each.
Week 27 saw further improvement, both in numbers caught and the amount entering the system. Water levels were dropping off, but there was still more than enough for fish to easily run the system. 35 were landed, 15 off the River and 20 off Finlough. Kevin Finegan had 4, Seamus O’Neill, Daithi Ryan, Giovanni Mazzoleni and Terry Bradley and myself, all had 2 each and Eoin Warner, Stefano Giovanardi, Orazio Gatti, David Tucker, Enda O’Connell, Kamal Scarpello, John Connolly, Wayne Byrne and Jim O’Brien all had 1each. Highlight of the week was Danny Irvine and Will Parkes landing 12 fish off Finlough in two sessions. Most popular fly was without doubt the Delphi Collie, which accounted for 19. The 30th of June was the first day of week 27 and our catches that day brought the monthly total to 50 split evenly between River and Finlough. Total for the year to the end of June was 75, the River producing 33 and Finlough 42.
Water levels had dropped to 22 by the start of Week 28 but there were plenty of fish running. Owen Kirk, Denis Quill and Tomas Ryan managed to land 13 between them on the 7th and 8th, all off the River bar one. The Drea party returned again, and they have landed 8 so far, including John Totenham’s first ever salmon, a fish of 2lbs15ozs from the Whin Pool on a VamBeck. Natalie Browne from Australia also managed to land her first ever, a fish of 4lbs4ozs off Finlough on a Delphi Collie.
500 Not Out
Since this update, David reports a further 46 salmon to bring the season total to 180. There were a couple of notable catches too. Urs Leibundgut caught his first Delphi salmon on the 1st of August, 1993. Urs has landed many salmon since then, with the latest milestone his 500th Delphi salmon on the 18th of July! Well done Urs!

Monster Sea Trout
And Hughie Clarke had the fish of a lifetime on the 16th. Fishing the Whin Pool with a Conehead Francis/Snaelda variant, he hooked and landed what he thought at first to be a 10-11lbs salmon, but was quickly confirmed to be a sea trout! Even in the days before fish farming when sea trout were abundant, such a fish was almost unheard of. An incredible capture, and after a quick photo the fish was released unharmed.
