Last week The Predator decided to fish a shingle bank just south of Larne off the Antrim coast in search for cod as they fished there many many years ago with good results, baits were fresh peeler crab and a total of 26 cod were taken with these 2 the best of the day both double figures. Mackerel are still mid channel and will be heading this way inside the next month.

Charter skipper Mark Gannon reports from recent deep sea fishing out from Courtmacsherry.
The weather has been mixed but the fishing especially for cod and Pollack has been constantly good. Several of the Pollack were near Specimen size with the cod up to 14 lb. With the tides slacking off we will concentrate on the wrecks next weekend, hopefully catching Specimen Ling and Pollack.

In the estuary good reports of Bass last week with the warm conditions, but with the change in temperature they are being elusive and a group last Saturday with the self drives only managed one take from a Bass but landed a good few Pollack. Plenty of good size mullet shoaling near the pier so maybe worth a go!

Well, my fishing yak season is oficially opened.
Last Sunday I was ready to go to do some perch fishing, then I got a phone call from Alex. Quick change of gear, and an hour later, we were on the road heading down the South East.
Grey Gurnard from yak
After we passed the well known Waterford bridge, we decided to hit few spots on the Copper Coast. It was dull and overcast afternoon with no wind and temp about 12 deg C. Sea was flat calm, with light swell about 1 ft. We found a nice small fishing harbour, with easy place to park the car and handy slip for land ours boats. There was few others yakers on the water, but they were without rods.
The plan was simply. One small lure box per yak. We hoped for an early lure bass. For the first two hours we searched shallows, throwed plugs into nice channels between the rocks. Water was gin clear, with average deep about 10 ft. We fish on the ebbing tide. No sign of fish at all.
Because shallows appeared unproductive, we moved a bit into the deeper waters. Depth reached about 20 ft, but the bottom was flat and sandy without snags. Surprisingly we founded fish over there. But it wasn’t silvers bars 😉
There was a shoal of Grey Gurnards underneath and they played the ball. Alex and I counted a couple of them, before yak’s were drifted over the area. Nothing special, but I added another species to my lure caught fish list, and oficially opened my yak season. When the contact with gurnards was lost , we moved back to the shore. In the one of deep holes close the rocks, Alex hit good size pollock, and the fishing frenzy started 😉 We call the day about 8, with couple nice pollacks up to 7lb. Not a bad start of season.
ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on fishing trends from Lough Currane.
2/4/12 All the Head lines go to Tam, who caught a 7 lb. salmon on the troll with his Father-in-law and renowned ghillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan and of www.vincentsfishing.com and for the rest of we anglers the least said the soonest mended. Wind N light and overcast with the odd shower.
3/4/12 It was a hard day out on Lough Currane with a strong NNE blowing across the Lake, but this didn’t deter my noble anglers from venturing out, and all the head lines go to Mr. Philip Smith of the UK who caught his first ever salmon weighing in at 10 lbs caught on the troll fishing out of www.butlerarms.com and with his ghillie Mr. Junior Scully, so congratulations to Philip and may it be the first of many, and as his good friend, Mr. Kevin Toale said to me there is nothing like your first salmon and there is no argument to that. Wind as already stated.
4/4/12 There was a strong NNE blowing across the lake and there were only two boats manipulating in the wild conditions and I can say thing, both failed miserably in their duties.
5/4/12 Again we had that NNE wind blowing across the Lake, but at least we had a catch of the day, and that goes to Local ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, who caught a fine 10 lbs salmon on the troll and in the words of Dominic, you can’t take a photo of the Salmon it is already cut up and in the deep-freeze. 6/4/12 They say the early worm that catches my noble gentlemen the salmon and today was a perfect example of that, when renowned ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy headed out early this morning and caught himself a fine 8 lb. on the troll before 9 am and headed home as the other anglers were just arriving for their blank day, need I say more. Wind NNE light to fresh and overcast.
7/4/12 Lough Currane may be on the low side but fair play too Lough Currane its coming up with my Noble Gentlemen the Salmon and catch of the day goes to Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of [email protected] who caught a cracker of a salmon on the troll, weighing in at 13 lb. and talking of big fish one angler today got into salmon at the Bull Rock and drifted across the Lake too Water Lillie Bay, and I believe he didn’t see the salmon for the first 20 minutes but as he approached Water Lillie Bay the line went slack and the rest is history, how big the Salmon was I will leave too your imagination.
Well known ghillie Michael O'Sullivan with a lovely salmon of 13 lb. from Lough Currane.
8/4/12 Waterville Fishery saw some good action in all departments this Easter Sunday, I start with the Sea Trout department where Mr. Patrick Duperat of France caught a fine 4 lb. Sea Trout on the fly fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly and of www.lakelandshouse.com

and in the salmon department Mr. Collin Lynham of Dublin fishing with his ghillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer, caught a fine 7 lb. on the fly at the Reeds in the Mouth of Commeragh, and catch of the day goes to Local Gillie Mr. Vincent Appleby and of www.Salmonandseatrout.com who caught a fine Salmon of 10.5 lb. on the troll, they say self praise is no recommendation and I agree but those are the facts as see them. Now we head upstream Lough Derriana where Mr. Noel Clancy of Dublin caught 24 brown trout, and he was also telling that he also caught a few Kelts. Wind NW Light too fresh and overcast with light mist rain at times. With heavy rain coming in to night.

9/4/12 Lough Currane saw some reasonable action I start with the early shift yes you have it, Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy was in good form again when he caught a fine 11 lb. salmon on the troll, now we head for the fly department where Mr. Dave Ecclestone of the UK caught a fine 7 lb. salmon a the Bridge with his number 2 ghillie Mr. John Young of Waterville. Martin McCoy and couple of friends fished Lough Mask and had good sport with wets, dries and buzzer fishing. They saw a world of trout on Mask on the rocky shores and lively bay areas with fish on alder fly and adult buzzer.
On Friday, 30th March, the charter boat Sioux out of Valentia Island made her first trip of 2012. It was a beautiful day made even better by the fishing and wonderful wildlife. Siegy and crew spotted around 12 basking sharks near Puffin Island! Fishing was great with plenty of cod, coalfish and pollack coming to feathers and eels. They took a few fish home for dinner, the others were released.

Coarse fishing has still been very tough in the NE over the last few weeks although some good fishing for hybrids has been reported from Lough Muckno. Not many anglers have been out fishing but it is hoped that this will change over this bank holiday weekend. Last week at the Brothers Lake (Lisanisk) in Carrickmacross reports were received of up to 20 Carp being caught from Wed to Sunday with some nice double figured fish being taken. Some good fishing for roach and skimmers has also been reported from Capragh.

A dip tank will be provided complete with Virkon Aquatic for that purpose and we at IADA commend the Fishmaniak club for adhering to best Bio security practice.
IADA also laud their approach to fish handling and care by their 5 hour weigh, record and release policy during this 17 hour match.
Pawel Ladniak of the Fishmaniak Angling Club stated the he and his members were very happy to adopt these new bio-security measures and was looking forward to another successful competition on Lough Muckno.
