The weekend began with Derry’s Shaun McIntyre who did very well using wets which banked him a dozen trout. Alan Temple also from Derry used black and orange buzzers to catch and release six trout. Donncha Steele (Buncrana) bagged two which weighed 4lb 8ozs. His father Chris banked two while John Steele (Larne) released three which took wee hare’s ears. Dungiven’s Gavin Moore spent a couple of hours tempting trout and enjoying the sunshine.

Angling guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/
20/3/12 We Anglers were soon brought down to earth today after yesterdays excitement, yes you have got it, all quiet on the SW front. Wind S then veered SW fresh and overcast.
21/3/12 Not a lot to be said, Wind SW light and overcast with light rain at times.
22/3/12 There were a few boats out manipulating, but sadly my Noble Angler couldn’t stimulate my noble salmon into action. Wind SE fresh and overcast with light rain.
23/3/12 It was a wild day on Lough Currane with a strong SE blowing across the lake, and I can tell you it wasn’t long before the anglers rods were stimulating with my noble salmon, first in the striking zone was local ghillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer, who caught a fine 7 lbs 10 ozs salmon on the troll on the south side, now we head to the North side, where Mr. Alastair Dunbar of UK caught a 7.5 lbs salmon on the fly at the Ledge, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan and of www.vincentsfishing.com
Alastair Dunbar from the UK with a nice salmon from Lough Currane.
24/3/12 All quiet on the SW front. Wind SE fresh to strong.
25/3/12 The same results as yesterday in all departments except wind SE light with bright hazy sunshine all day.
Updated 28 March: Blazing hot days with little to no wind, need I say more because my Noble Salmon has spoken or I should say he didn’t.
That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just facts.
Fishery Manager David McEvoy reports on salmon fishing on the Delphi Fishery
Fishing conditions have become increasingly difficult since my last update with water levels now at 12cms.
We have however managed to land 3 fish since my last update.
Peter Joyce managed to land his second fish of the week while fishing with Paul Duffy. The fish was taken in the Rock Pool and again on a Willie Gunn. It weighed in at 10 lbs.
We then had 2 on Thursday off Finlough.
The first was taken by Paul Duffy and was well deserved as Paul doesn’t catch that many fish with us, so if any one deserved it he did. The fish weighed in at 12 lbs 12 ozs with sea lice and was taken on a Willie Gunn.
Paul Duffy with a nice salmon of 12 lb. 12 oz at Delphi.
Per Axman one of our Swedish party had a fish of 7 lb. 13 oz. in the afternoon on a Sunrae Shadow.
Since then conditions have become increasingly difficult with not only low water levels but also winds becoming SE and squally.
Our new anglers coming in this week will have to concentrate more on the beauty of this place than the poor fishing conditions but here this can change at any time.
Fly Casting Clinic Kilsheelin Castle 1st of April 2012
The Angling Council of Ireland and it’s Salmon and Sea Trout Recreational Anglers SSTRAI have come together with the Game Angling Instructors Association (GAIA) to provide a casting clinic day for all ACI members and friends. This event is also supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland. We especially welcome all people new to the sport of angling and fly fishing in particular.
View from Kilsheelan Bridge
This event is being run to promote the sport of fly angling, to help fly anglers from all disciplines develop new casting skills. The venue has been provided free of charge and the instructors have given their time free to help raise funds for CARA Junior School R.N 20354A. This is a new special school for children aged from 4 –12 who have both Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disability. Many of the pupils would have additional sensory and emotional needs that may also impact on their learning. The school was established in 2011 and are in temporary premises. They have recently acquired computers and require some computer furniture and storage units.
All elements of Single and double handed fly casting will be covered. Some of the worlds top international FFF Masters, APGAI & GAIA Fly Casting instructors will be present on the day along with ACI Angling Coaches. There will be demonstrations, group and individual tuition available. A light lunch will be served on the bankside. Fishing will also be available to those in attendance so they can practice their newly learned skills.
Event Fee is €30.00 and all proceeds will be presented to Emir Duffy Principle CARA Special School on April 2nd World Autism Day.
Kilsheelan is appx 3 miles outside Clonmel on the Waterford road. On entering Kilsheelan Village turn right and go over the bridge. The entrance gates to the castle grounds is just beyond the bridge to your right. Look forward to seeing you there.
An excellent week of angling was had on Carrowmore Lake, with ten salmon reported, bringing the catch total to 19 for the season thus far. Gerry Carolan boated a fine fish of 13lbs while Tony Gibbons, Westport, had one of 11lbs and returned a second. Frank Dooley had success once again, catching two and releasing one. David Lennon, Westport, had one of 8lbs, as did John Cosgrove, Bangor Erris and Ben Banes. Martin McDonnell, Belmullet, boated one of 9lbs with Vincent Rigney capturing one of 8.75lbs. The Green Peter appears to be the most productive fly on the Lake at present.
Angling effort on the Moy has been surprisingly low over the past week, resulting in only two salmon being caught. Water levels have dropped considerably, with many fisheries now at fly fishing level. The East Mayo Anglers’ water produced its first springer of the year, a 9lbs salmon caught by Declan McNulty, Swinford, on the worm. Downstream on the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water, Steven McGinty caught his second of the season, a 6.5lbs fish, also caught on worm. Anglers are reminded that angling is free on the Ridge Pool until the first fish of the season is caught on the beat. For further details contact the Moy Fishery office on Tel: +353 (0)96 21332 or Email: [email protected].
Once again many anglers have enjoyed great success on Lough Conn, with Ronnie Chambers, Belfast, reporting ten trout for a days fishing. All of Ronnies’ fish weighed between 1lbs and 1.5lbs, were taken on Buzzers and were all released. Elsewhere on the Lough, Harry McCafferty had four for a day and Mick McNeeley and Brendan Breslin, Knockmore, had two each off Brankwansha shore, their best was 2lbs.
Joe Ferguson, Knockmore, had three trout in an hour off Glass Island, all taken on a Bibio. Ian Wise boated two trout to the Buzzer, with boat partner John Warren landing one. Finally John Corcoran caught one of 2lbs in Bog Bay.
Lough na Leibe is continuing to fish well with anglers experiencing good catches. A total of sixty-four trout were reported by ten anglers for the week, in addition there were a further thirty-one caught during the fly fishing competition held on the Lough on Sunday 25th. There were good hatches of duckfly throughout the week as well as increasing numbers of olives appearing. On Monday the 19th, Francis Brady caught fifteen trout while Tommy Lynch caught nine. New club member Jason Chandler did particularly well on Friday the 23rd,landing a total of sixteen trout and losing numerous other fish in play. Successful fly patterns included the small midge pupae patterns, small nymph patterns, buzzer patterns and emerging duckfly patterns. The Sunday fly fishing competition was won by Francis Brady with 7 trout, Martin Lawrence landed 10 trout to take second place, and in third was Anthony Walsh with 5 fish.
24/03/12 Peter has fished the Royal Canal (in the upper Shannon Catchment) on several occasions only producing a few Roach, but today was excellent with Peter so excited that he nearly took the paint off of the doors rushing round here to show us photos of the first Tench of 2012. He managed 4 great Tench, with a smattering of Roach, he was driven off by the cold evening air. He did have a large 10 lb+ Carp cruise under his rod tip which was a shock. Hopefully we will start seeing an influx of anglers soon as the fishing is sure to improve.
