Happy Skipper Peter Power

Prospector 1, skippered by Peter Power has returned to the west coast early this season to find the fishing excellent for this time of year.

Mackeral in March
Mackerel in March

Plenty of coalfish, pollack and some cod to be had – mostly on feathers (Hyabusa Sabiki or Shamrock Crazy Clowns). Fishing out of Mullaghmore, Co Sligo, Peter and his crew caught these fish at Bo More, Shaddon and east of Inishmurray Island in Donegal Bay. On 10 March they finished with six boxes of fish including some lovely fresh mackerel.

Frost back but olives still hatching on Bann and Cusher.

Beautiful Trout
Beautiful Trout

Both Rivers still are producing quality trout to nymphs and dries, although hatches tended to occur later in the day probably due to the overnight frost.  Mark Sloan won Saturdays Bann competition at Banbridge with a fine wild brown of 1.5lbs, Willie Russell was second and Neil Cardwell third. The Gilford stretch of the Bann  is also producing consistently with plenty of fish in the 20 to 28cm range falling for nymphs in the faster water.  The Banns tributary, Cusher isn’t being outdone by the parent river either with Bernie McMurray returning 40 trout over the 20cm mark for his day with local guide Brian Russell.  The bulk of these fish fell to baetis patterns both nymph and dry.

Lower Lagan sulks while upper reaches flourish!

Young man lands a fish

The Iveagh stretch of the Lagan appears to have went off the boil from the temperatures drop with reports that a trout per run/pool is as good as it gets at present, although the size of fish can sometimes make up for this as Andrew Sloan showed on Sunday with two fine trout of 1.5lb and 2lb.  The temperatures haven’t affected the fish in the Dromore stretch as it continues to produce plenty of trout to mainly nymphs with odd pockets of fish lifting olive duns in selected areas.  As temperatures increase towards the weekend things should really liven up on all stretches.

End of day perch to more than 2lbs on spinners

40cm and 1.1 kg; a good perch by anyone's standards
40cm and 1.1 kg; a good perch by anyone's standards

An avid follower of the Catch of the Week and keen angler got in touch over the weekend with his own big fish story. Mateusz was driving home from a meeting and as his route took him past a likely looking piece of water in Co. Cavan he decided to try his luck before the last light of the day faded. It was a nice evening with no wind and straight away he was landing small to average sized perch. Apart from perch he also had a pike bite but lost it  after short fight. The pike never came to the surface so he never got to see how big it was.

This loss was more than  made up for by his capture, soon after of caught a lovely perch measuring 40 cm which he weighed at 1,1kg. After a couple of quick photos to record the catch his fish was safely returned  to the water.

19/03/12 A shift into very deep water behind Rathlin island produced this stunning large female skate estimated at 222lbs for Andrew Logan from the Carrick Fergus specimen hunters club.  This particular fish took off so fast that we had to throw off the anchor and go chasing her and within a little over 1 hour she was onboard.   The big fish took a whole dogfish for bait and was returned after a quick snap.

Czech out the Browns on the Upper Blackwater, Kerry

The water has settled and I managed to sample four wonderful hours on the Upper Blackwater. The land was clearly coming to life, the air was clean and I was standing knee deep in cool, clean after the previous days rain fall.

Being a passionate trout man, and in no way interested in salmon, I was tested in every way especially on my presentation skills and stalking, which were slightly rusty after a long winter. Still, I managed to connect with several browns, averaging 1lb and several magnificent smaller specimens (all released immediately with limited to no playing time, barbless hooks and with sincere care). The Blackwaters gentle and clean waters held brown trout displaying colours and a fight that shocked me into silence.

The lovely marked and deep golden browns were rising to a wonderful sporadic hatch of Dark Olives and Iron Blues from about 2pm as the sun warmed the shallows.

A few fish were seen rising but all are weary and presentation was the key. Apart from 2 small brownies taken on sub-surface pheasant tail nymphs, Czech nymphing the deep pools rewarded my efforts of 5 brownies with the largest around 2.5lb.
