Salmon fishing opened today on the River Feale to a chorus of bird song and a real feeling of Spring in the air. For lucky angler Patrick Lenihan the day only got better as he struck into the first fish of the river for 2012.

Patrick from Brosna, Co. Kerry caught the salmon at The Arch Stream, Ballinruddery, Listowel on a flying c.  The fish was a fresh run Springer approximately 9lbs in weight.

Go fishing on the River Feale

About 50% of the main River Feale and the Smearlagh River is controlled by 5 angling clubs. These clubs are some of the best angling waters and each club offers day tickets for visiting anglers. The rest of the Feale and its tributaries are effectively open waters, but it is recommended that local advise and direction be sought before accessing any stretches of the system. All club waters are signposted and some club stretches may vary annually.

Killocrim/Finuge Angling Club control approximately 6.5 kms (4 miles) of water downstream of Listowel. Good salmon and grilse angling and fair sea trout angling as the fish run through. ‘Fly only’ is the rule on a stretch of water at Finuge Bridge. Day and evening permits are available from Dan Joy Tel: International +353 68 40310 Tel Ireland 068 40310.

The North Kerry Anglers Association has access to about 15 kms (9 miles) of fishing in the vicinity of Listowel on both the main river and its tributary, the Smearlagh River. Salmon and grilse fishing with good sea trout. The town stretch has some beautiful salmon pools which have been recently developed, and this stretch also provides some very good sea trout fishing. contact North Kerry Anglers Association PRO Mr Jim Horgan Tel: Outside Ireland +353 68 23848. The Phil Fitzpatrick Memorial Grand Pike Competition will be held on the 3rd and 4th March 2012, organised by the Belturbet Angling and Conservation Club
The Phil Fitzpatrick Memorial Grand Pike Competition will be held on the 3rd and 4th March 2012, organised by the Belturbet Angling and Conservation Club

Belturbet Angling and Conservation Club are set for a resurgence of it’s renowned fishing opportunities with a competition on 3rd and 4th March to commemorate the late Phil Fitzpatrick, one of an army of local Belturbet people involved in building the tourism and fishing industries in the area over the past 50 years.  Belturbet and the surrounding area has a long tradition of fishing, both for leisure and competitively, from the shore and by boat, in it’s many lakes and rivers.  Pike and coarse fishing are in abundance and recent reports of fishing conditions are very positive in the region.

The competition, organised by a group of keen local anglers of national and international renown (some of whom have settled here from abroad, because of the wonderful availability of fishing prospects), working alongside local businesses to form a voluntary angling group, take place on local lakes and rivers. There are already considerable interest in the event.

The angling Club have put a huge amount of effort into this event, preparing posters, sponsorship, advertising and  getting competitors to come to the event – with the aim towards many more in the future.

The emergence of this fishing event ties up with other local revival and interest in the Belturbet community.  The weekend promises to be bountiful for fishing enthusiasts and a sight for all to see.

Devon minnow pulls Melvin salmon in Flanagan's Bay

Monday 20th to Sunday 26th February 2012.
A number of boats ventured out over the week but most anglers understandably concentrated on the weekend when there were some 9 or 10 boats out each day. I have only heard of 1 salmon caught this week so far. This was a sea liced 8 lb fish caught by Kevin Flanagan trolling a 3” blue & silver Devon Minnow in Flanagan’s Bay.

Mild weather brings trout to buzzer patterns on Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke Angling & Development Fishery Officer, IFI Ballyshannon reports

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 20th to Sunday 26th February 2012.

A number of boats ventured out over the week but most anglers understandably concentrated on the weekend when there were some 9 or 10 boats out each day. There were reports of the trout fishing picking up due in great part to good hatches of buzzers on the milder days. The best of the hatches seemed to be in the late afternoon or early evening around 5 pm. 3 anglers fishing Saturday had a good day recording 8 decent trout caught on wet flies with the best of these weighing 2¼ lb. This fish contained buzzers, hog lice and fresh water shrimps.

Navan Anglers Association Announce New Angling Opportunity

Calling all fishermen (& women)! Navan Anglers Association are actively recruiting new members for the coming season (1st. March- 30th. September), and would be pleased to accept applications from all, particularly from our younger friends. Navan anglers hold the rights to almost ten miles of superlative fishing on both the Boyne and the Kells Blackwater. Salmon to a mighty 21 lbs were landed on club waters last season, and the Trout angling has been described as some of the best Wild Brown Trout River fishing in Western Europe. Club membership has been reduced to €120 for a full season for 2012, and when you consider that this is the DAILY charge on some of our better known Salmon Rivers, the value for money is obvious. In keeping with our youth policy, juvenile membership is only €10 for the season, as we recognise that our young people are the best resource we have. Fly-tying classes, casting demonstrations, competitions and open days are all planned for the coming year.

The club is one of the oldest existing voluntary organisations in Navan, and we hope to continue the proud tradition of our predecessors who founded the club in 1953, with the aims of preserving and conserving this wonderful natural amenity. As our Chairman, the well known angling author Peter O’Reilly stated “The River Boyne is one of our most precious resources, and it deserves to be enjoyed and marvelled at for the natural wonder it is. We in Navan anglers believe that this resource is to be shared and enjoyed, and we ask for your support in our endeavours”. Membership forms are available either by emailing the club at [email protected] or from the following tackle dealers:

  • East coast angling (Colm Lynch) Balmoral ind. Estate, Navan
  • Clarkes sports Den, Trimgate Street, Navan
  • Angler’s world, Balmoral ind. Estate Navan
  • Southside Angling, Cork Street, Dublin 8
  • Rory’s, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
