David Warrington of the website Ireland’s Coarse Fishing contacted us to let us know about a huge fish caught earlier this week.
Ireland’s first 40 lb carp was banked on the 27th of February. The huge fish weighed in at an portly 40 lb and 2 ozs. Angler Andy Doyle successfully tempted the 40 lb fish known locally as “Big Hole” at the very late hour of 4 am. Andy was fishing at Private syndicate water near Maynooth in Co. Kildare which was formerly known as Maynooth Fisheries. This huge fish wins our Catch of the Week "Big Hole" - Ireland's first 40lb carp http://www.irelandscoarsefishing.com/
For the second time in three years, Ballina native Martin Conroy has hooked and landed the first fresh run salmon of the season on the Moy system. This is the earliest date the ‘first fish’ has been reported for a long number of years. The fish was caught today at approximately 9.30am just upstream of the newly refurbished Salmon Weirs, in the Ballina Salmon Anglers water. The salmon is surprisingly small for the time of year; at approximately 3lbs. Inland Fisheries Ireland staff have collected scale samples to ascertain the age of the fish, as it does not appear to be a multi-sea winter/spring salmon. Salmon anglers are reminded to be vigilant over the coming weeks when angling, as there are large numbers of kelts present in many systems.
The 2012 Leinster Youths Fly Tying Competition took place in the Tullaghan Centre at Lough Owel on Saturday 25th February 2012. 28/02 I went out for a cast today expecting to see some nice bass at this time of year, but I only managed a few small bass and flounder. We need the surf getting bigger to have a chance at the larger bass. Or for it to calm right down to get out on the fly or lures. I can’t wait to get out on the Kayaks again.
Get hooked at city west show is on the 10th & 11th of march so looking forward to seeing some of you lads there.
22/02 With a bit of a surf up I went out for a cast with Ivor today. We went to one of my local marks with lug worm and razor fish. After the first hour I started to get a bit bored with no bites coming to either rod. And then it was like someone ringing the dinner bell! We caught 6 bass in less then 1 hour – a quick shoal of bass came through and we made the most of it. The fish were not big but good fun, all around 2lb to 3lb.

ANGLING NOTES: BY ALL accounts, the trout-angling season got off to a good start on Loughs Corrib and Mask in the west. And those who ventured out had some rewarding catches, says fisheries inspector Kevin Crowley. In the Greenfields area, a number of anglers reported trout on the fly, including Frank Reilly, who had two on wetfly patterns. Peter Byrne, from Castlebar, also had two for about 1.1kg (2.5lb), both returned. Paul Dignam from Ennis reported a good trout of 0.9kg (2lbs) on fly… Irish Times, 27/02/12.
