Angling report from the river Drowes

RIVER DROWES – Monday 13th to Sunday 19th February 2012.

The weather was fairly miserable over the week with wintery showers towards the weekend.  Sunday was a lovely sunny day however and this was understandably the busiest day.  The Drowes had nice water levels all week and on Sunday the gauge was reading around 0.65 metres.  There was a number fresh salmon caught this week and more again hooked and lost. On Wednesday I.Graham recorded a 7½lb salmon caught on a fly from the Upper Mill Pool.  On Friday, Brian McEvoy caught and released a 10lb salmon.  The fish fell for a spinner in the Island Pool.  On Saturday, Matt Ahern reported a 10lb salmon caught on a Rapala from the Washstones (having already hooked and lost 2 salmon earlier in the week).

Quiet week on Lough Currane with only an occasional kelt reported.

Angling ghillie and guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane

13/2/12 All quiet on the SW front, and no reports of any real rod benders.

14/2/12 Not a lot to report except my Noble Anglers failed miserably in their duties in procuring my old Gentlemen the Salmon. Wind north light to fresh with the odd light shower.

15/2/12 All quiet in all departments. Wind NW light to fresh and overcast with the odd light shower.

16/2/12 There were a few boats out manipulating their Repala’s and their Flies, but alas all failed miserably in their duties, failed or not, I can tell you one thing it won’t be long before my Noble gentlemen will be heating up the key board on my pc and I have spoken and that’s it. Wind WNW light and overcast with light mist rain.

17/2/12 All quiet on the SW front. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with heavy rain at times.

18/2/12 There were a few boats manipulating, and all failed miserably in their duties be it fly or troll, Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats  – [email protected] reported to me that on of his boats caught a Kelt on the troll and it was such a good Kelt. Wind NW fresh to strong with the odd shower.

19/2/12 Lough Currane was on the quiet side, except for the odd Kelt being caught. Wind NW light to calm with reasonable cloud cover with the odd light shower. That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just facts

Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association juvenile anglers appeared at the Annual Angling Fair which was held at the National Show Centre in Cloghran, County Dublin on the 12th February 2012. These young anglers were on hand to demonstrate their fly tying and casting skills. Ian Howard from Mallow gave a casting demonstration that would impress any experienced fly caster, whilst Ciaran Reilly of Loughrea and Fergal McKiernan gave fly tying demonstrations. As well as being members of the 2012 Youths International Fly Fishing Team, Ciaran and Fergal are also members of their respective Provincial Fly Tying Teams.

Amongst visitors to the ITFFA youths stand was renowned fly dresser Frankie McPhilips and International Fly Fishing Association President, Michael Callaghan.

This year Ireland will host the 2012 Youths International Fly Fishing Competition. Teams from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales will compete against one another in the International Match which will be held on Lough Owel, just outside Mullingar in County Westmeath on 1st August. This promises to be an extremely competitive event and it is expected that the Irish Youths Team will do extremely well.

The ITFFA are committed to promoting, encouraging and fostering an interest in fly angling amongst young anglers; juveniles interested in participating in the sport should contact their local trout angling association.

New Season on Lough Mask

Report by Ronan Cusack

Mask opened its doors to angling again this week and indeed got off to a flying start.

Water levels are still fairly high but this did not discourage plenty of anglers from venturing out. Conditions on Wednesday were perfect with mild temperatures and a soft westerly breeze.  Ballinrobe Anglers chairman Tommy Foley and boat partner Paul Loscher had 7 good fish on opening day, all too various wet flies. Their best fish was 1.75lbs and all were returned. Tim Hannon, Ballinrobe, also fished on Wednesday and he had 2  fish for his day (best fish 1.5lbs, both released). Noel Moran and Kevin Beattie from  Ballinrobe fished wet flies on opening day and they also had 4 fish (best fish 1.5lbs). Ronan Cusack and Kieran Biggins fished on Wednesday afternoon and they had 2 fish, again on wets (best fish 1.5lbs, both released).

Shore angling on the western side of Mask was reasonably good on opening day with trout up to 4lbs  reported. Unfortunately this was short lived and the going was tough for the remainder of the week, possibly due to the dry spell and drop in water levels.

Young Sean Cusack spent a few hours trolling on Sunday with dad Ronan and older brother Conor, and landed a lovely 5.5lbs ferox trout, which was carefully photographed and released again.

There’s profit if we manage fishing

A LONG time ago, when I was a student, my life was characterised by long summer vacations during which I had no money. I compensated for this by doing some commercial fishing. I worked my own small boat off the south coast and, one summer, worked on a larger boat in the north east. My strongest memory…
