Some kelts and spent trout reported from Lough Currane since the first salmon was recorded on the opening day of the season.

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

17/1/12 Now down to today’s facts, Lough Currane got off to a fine start with a fine salmon just under the 8 lb. class, caught on the troll by Mr. Dermot Devereux fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and not satisfied with that they put their rods out again and contacted another, but sadly my noble gentlemen came off, and this evening Mr. Dermot Devereux and his Gillie headed for the Waterville Inn to receive The Paddy Carey Memorial Cup and a fine gold watch, and in the words of Shakespeare today’s catch was what you would call poetic justice, Nice one Paddy your Nephew did well. Wind S fresh and overcast with rain for most of the day.

18/1/12 All quiet on the SW front today except for a few kelts caught on the troll.

19/1/12 There were 4 boats manipulating on Lough Currane today be it fly or troll all failed miserably in their duties, on the kelt front just the the odd one or two caught.

20/1/12 just two boats out all they reported were a spent trout and one or two kelts caught. Wind west light to fresh and overcast in the afternoon.

21/1/12 There were a few boats out, but the only bit of action they reported was in the Kelt and spent Trout department. Wind WNW fresh and overcast and cold.

22/1/12 All quiet on the SW front except for odd kelt and spent trout being caught. That is your ration for this week, from your ghillie/guide and the Waterville fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just facts.

Donegal CC fined E5,500 for ‘gross negligence’

Donegal County Council has been fined €5,500, including costs, for gross negligence in the protection of the river Eske and its fish stocks. Judge Kevin Kilrane heard how a council employee left two valves open after repairs to water treatment works. As a result sludge which should have gone into the Donegal town sewer system was discharged into a tributary of the River Eske at the adjoining town lands of Drumlaght and Drumlonagher.

Plenty of small roach taken on the pole on the River Finn at a match near Clones.

23 anglers turned out for the latest match in the Float Only Winter League in blustery, mild and dry conditions.

The match was fished on the Finn River at Annies Bridge near Clones. With the venue being pegged above and below the bridge.

The heave rain on Thursday night caused the river to be up about a foot above normal, with the use of flat floats required in some sections.

Although the weights were low plenty of small fish were caught mainly on the pole.

The winner of the match was league leader Neil Mazurek (Cootehill) with 5.600Kgs, he just managed to pip Nick Howell (Kilskeey) 5.470Kgs at the next peg.

Third overall was Tony Kersley (Ballycassidy) 2.600Kgs from peg 9 above the bridge.

The  other section winner was Paul Leese (Cootehill) 1.300Kgs on peg 24.

Neil Mazurek (Cootehill) remains on top of the league with 38 points.

The next match in the league will be on Sun 05 Feb, book in as normal if you wish to fish.

Klinkhammers and tiny buzzer flies continue to tempt rainbow trout at the Cashel Trout Fishery.

Cashel Trout Fishery report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

Although we have been having quite unsettled weather anglers are still keen to give Cashel a throw and hoping to catch at least one tagged trout to the value of £50.   Dungiven’s Shane Irwin released two which fell to klinkhammers while Derry’s Billy Hazlett released five which took wee buzzers.  Patrick McDaid and Paul Bradley also from Derry and on their first visit to Cashel used bloodworms to make their catches which averaged 2 lb. in weight.  Liam, Henry and Seamus Kelly (Derry) released about half a dozen trout between them while young lad James Wilkinson, also on his first visit, did quite well releasing three lovely trout which took small lures.

We have a great selection of rods, reels and tackle at keen prices for that special someone

Irish Angling Update – 19/12/01

Josie Mahon of Inland Fisheries Ireland with her 17lb 8oz pike from Blessington
Josie Mahon of Inland Fisheries Ireland with her 17lb 8oz pike from Blessington

The nice mild weather for January looks set to continue as there was plenty of angling effort all over the country in the past week including the opening of a few important salmon fisheries in Co. Kerry yesterday.

Yesterday it would appear that there was a race for the first salmon in Co. Kerry between anglers fishing on Lough Currane at Waterville and fisheries in the Killarney area.  There was a fine salmon of 10 lb. 8 oz. taken on the River Flesk at 10.00 am by Damien Dillon on a red flying C bait.  However, ten minutes earlier, on Lough Currane, ghillie Neil O’Shea put the net under an 8.5 lb. salmon for his client Dermot Devereaux to secure the first salmon of the new season in Co. Kerry.  Up on the River Drowes in Co. Donegal there were only a few rods out at the weekend on the river and while some fresh fish were sighted none were taken on the rod.

There were plenty of pike anglers out around the country at the weekend but there were reports of only small fish moving in general.  However, well known angler from Dublin, who also works for Inland Fisheries Ireland in the Blackrock office, Josie Mahon showed up some well known Dublin pike anglers up at Blessington Lake when she landed a lovely 17 lb. 8 oz pike on a deadbait.  Josie quickly landed the fish, photographed it and put it back carefully and wins our Catch of the Week.   The only other pike were a few reported by pike guide Michael Flanagan from Mullingar who took a few fish on lures to 8 lb. from Lough Lene.

Courtown Sea Angling Club ran their annual RNLI fundraising competition on Sunday last 15th January 2012. A total of 85 anglers fished in very tough unsettled and blustery conditions. Despite this, lots of fish were caught and species included coalies, flounder, dabs and rockling.  The Leinster league and EFSA Festival were announced for the coming two weeks and we will have reports from both events in coming weeks.

Down in Cobh, the Light Lines series continues in Cork Harbour from this weekend and good catches of codling are expected to dominate the fishing.

There was some nice Rainbow Trout reported from the Curragh Springs near Newbridge at the weekend.  Small black Klinkhammer and Adams dry flies accounted for most of the fish.

Finally, IFI staff seized 45 bass and over 1000m of net in a fisheries protection operation on Wednesday last.

With the mild weather looking set to continue, there should be plenty of fishing activity at the weekend in particular.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Vincent Appleby from www.salmonandseatrout.com reports that the first salmon weighing 8.5 lb. of the new season in Co. Kerry was caught at 9.50 am by Dermot Devereux on Lough Currane.  Dermot was trolling with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com when he connected with his prize fish.  They contacted another fish later in the day but the fish shed the hook near the boat. Mr. Dermot Devereux and his Gillie headed for the Waterville Inn to receive The Paddy Carey Memorial Cup and a fine Gold watch for the first salmon of the new season from the Lough.

Small pike feature at many lakes but good perch on Lough Lene

JACKS ON LINE.

We had a couple of lovely days last week, all be it cold on the Lakes. I ventured out with younger Brother J.J. and we boated eight pike all on Lures. Plus we lost as many; they were coming short and just snapping at the lures. The best pike was just about 8lbs, but they gave us some sport on the jerk bait rods.J.J. had a few Slomo Concept suspender lures, and they really took a shine to these colorful baits. Still our best fish fell to a Mini Bulldog, fished in 10-12 ft of water.

LENE A.G.M.

I spent a day on Lene last week, but could not interest the Lene pike. Eventually I dropped out into deep water and started Perch fishing. The Perch were on for having a go, and I boated 5 nice colorful charathers. It may be not every anglers Cup of Tea, but jigging for perch is great fun, and its very seldom you draw a blank.

Lough Lene Angling Association have a busy season coming on line in 2012, and on Friday January 20th they hold their Annual General Meeting. It’s an 8-30 start and Collinstown Hall is the venue. The Lake produced some super brown and rainbow trout last season, and in 2011  up on 1,500 2 year plus triploid rainbows were stocked into Lene.It will certainly be interesting to see how these fish over wintered. The lake will not open for Trout fishing till March 1st.

Bigger pike elusive on Cavan lakes recently

Sheila Bromley shows her first pike of the 2012 season
Sheila Bromley shows her first pike of the 2012 season

Peadar O’Brien fished recently for pike in the Cavan area with Sheila Bromley and husband Liam from the Ballybay Coarse Angling Club. Peadar reports that caught Sheila had a surprise catch, a nice 3lb trout which was taken on a pike bait. The trout which was obviously not deterred by the wire trace and pike bait was carefully handled, photographed and returned unharmed to the lake. The group had a few jacks but the bigger fish were unfortunately conspicuous by their absence. Sheila also had her first pike of the 2012 season.
