Most fish are being caught on a variety of lures with various Buzzer combinations catching. The larger fish are a bit more evasive recently feeding in the deeper water but surprisingly Stephen Potts landed a fine 10lb Rainbow on dry-fly.

An amendment to the rules this year, which we brought in for the last competition, is that only the mainline needs to be 15lb bs or less. If you are using a shockleader it can be heavier line, as can be your rig main body and snoods. And with cod to 10.5lb in the Harbour this month you can expect some good fish to be taken.

If you are fishing on Sunday please book in with Mary (021-4812167) before tonight.

The remaining competition dates are:

  • Sunday 19th Febuary 2012
  • Sunday 25th March 2012
  • Sunday 22th April 2012

Also, for those anglers travelling, we’ve negotiated a special deal with the Commodore Hotel if overnight accommodation is required – Bed & breakfast will be available at €29 per person.

Sea anglers brave bad weather in Courtown – Gorey Guardian, 17/01/12

BLUSTERY conditions and heavy surf made for a bitterly cold but challenging day for the 85 anglers who came from across Ireland to take part in the Courtown Sea Anglers RNLI fundraiser on Sunday.

The shore angling competition was held on Kilgorman beach near Castletown, and the long line of anglers down the coastline made for an impressive sight. The winner on the day, with 24 fish, was James Ryan from New Ross, while Joe Byrne from Courtown was second. Third was John Watchorn from Bannow Bay.

Josie Mahon, Fisheries Inspector, was recently fishing at Blessington with colleagues from IFI. It was a bright January day and though the fishing was generally quiet Josie soon had reason to be high spirits. Fishing a mackerel deadbait she had a good run which turned into a powerful, dogged opponent. After an exciting tussle the fish was finally banked and weighed at 17lb 8oz. After a quick photo the fish was swiftly returned none the worse.

Conditions improving on the Drowes but no more salmon

Water levels have thankfully dropped on the Drowes and the gauge at present is reading just under 8. The fishery was quiet during the week but there were a few rods out on Saturday. There was however no fresh salmon reported although some rods say they sighted a couple of fresh salmon. With the river continuing to fall more settled weather forecast, the fishing may improve towards the weekend.

Islandbridge revisited – The Irish Times, 16/01/12

Derek Evans

ANGLING NOTES: THE FIRST salmon of the year for 2012 from the River Liffey on New Year’s Day conjures up several interesting questions. For a river that has remained closed for salmon angling for the past five years surely this was a remarkable achievement and one that requires closer scrutiny by fisheries scientists.

The decision by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) to open the lower reaches at Islandbridge on New Year’s Day for survey reasons under Section 59 of the Fisheries Act was well received by Dublin and District Salmon Anglers (DDSA). However, it must also be heeded as an important step on the road to recovery.

Keeping in mind the following points, is it not a reasonable assertion to assume that the Liffey could open for catch and release, even on a part-season basis, for salmon angling as and from next year?

First, the validity of the fish counter at Islandbridge is questionable as a true measure of salmon returning to the river. My understanding is that many fish bypass the counter particularly at high tide and flood conditions, and instead opt to move upriver via the easily managed weir.

DCAL takes wild salmon off menu in Northern Ireland – BBC News, 12/01/12

By Mike McKimm, BBC NI environment correspondent

Fishermen and anglers around Northern Ireland have been asked to help protect wild salmon populations.

The call comes after research indicates a significant downturn in the abundance of wild Atlantic salmon.

“The continued commercial exploitation of wild Atlantic salmon and killing of salmon caught by rod and line in the DCAL jurisdiction is currently untenable,” said the Northern Ireland fisheries minister, Caral Ni Chuilin.

“We have to take further steps to conserve salmon populations.”

The concern comes from the annual monitoring of salmon rivers in Northern Ireland.

Conservation targets had been set for a number of rivers and subsequent monitoring of those rivers showed they failed to reach the targets most years from 2002.

Irish Angling Update – 12/01/12

Overall conditions have continued to be mild which has suited anglers at sea and on freshwater. There was a break in the winds which saw a few boats fishing off shore and inshore at venues from Red Bay to Cork Harbour. In many areas rivers are still running a bit high but as the weather is to remain dry prospects should improve at these fisheries over the weekend.

Coarse anglers on the River Barrow were delighted with the quality of the fish and size of the bags caught recently. Despite the cold weather and a rising river there were a number of catches in excess of 50 lb.  Roach/bream hybrids to 4lb, perch to 2lb and dace to 2lb featured in one catch. The biggest bag was taken by Paul McLaughlin and weighed 69lb. A recent float only match on Lough Garadice and the canal at Ballyconnell saw more modest catches and a group of young anglers on Lough Ramor enjoyed catching a variety of coarse fish with the Dublin Angling Initiative.

The Cavan lakes are fishing well for pike and both the angling duo from Top Tackle and Peadar O’Brien had good sport there recently. Lures accounted for all the pike landed and though nothing over 13 lb was caught the fishing proved very enjoyable.

Cod continue to feature in the catches of anglers on Cork Harbour and fish to over 10lb have been landed on soft plastics. Anglers fishing with Hamish Currie from Red Bay took a number of specimen spurdogs from a mark off Rathlin Island. Some good conger and bullhuss were also brought to the boat.

Courtown Sea Angling Club are running their annual RNLI fundraising competition on Sunday next 15th January 2012. Fishing will take place from 2pm till 6pm and all are welcome to attend and participate in the event. If you would like to take part in the competition or simply attend and support the event you can get details from Joe Byrne, Courtown Angling Centre at 087 6613145.

Water levels fell on the Drowes over the week, but no more fish were reported and angling effort has been light. The Laune, Killarney Lakes, Lough Currane and a number of other Kerry rivers open for salmon fishing on the 17th.

Most areas will remain dry tonight with sharp frost and a risk of icy patches, especially in the midlands, north and east.  Tomorrow, Friday, will be a dry, bright day in most parts, with sunny spells, especially in the east. Atlantic coastal areas will be cloudier, with a little patchy drizzle. Maximum temperatures 7 to 10 Celsius, with light mainly southerly breezes.  Saturday will continue cool and mainly dry with some sunny spells initially; however, cloud will tend to increase and a little drizzle is likely to develop near southern and southwestern coasts where southeast breezes will freshen also. Sunday will remain cool as winds back southeast to east, light to moderate. A good deal of cloud may persist during the day but clear spells are likely to develop overnight into Monday, leading to a hard frost for most areas and some freezing fog patches. Monday itself will be dry with sunny spells but fog and frost may be slow to clear some places and it will remain cold overall despite light winds; another hard frost will set in on Monday night.
