Some good pike action at Castleblayney.

Winter pike fishing is never easy, and sub zero temperatures, rain, winds, hail and sleet all conspire to prevent us from going fishing. Sometimes the thoughts of the weather alone is enough to put us off venturing out. But when we do decide to brave the elements we can be surprised at what can turn up. On Wednesday 7th December angling guide Peadar O’Brien and David Byrne Inland Fisheries Ireland spent a few hours fishing in the Castleblayney area. They had all of the weather conditions mentioned above and it was evident that trollling and spinning were not going to work on the day. Two float rods were set up and fishing dead baits at about 10ft the floats drifted at a nice speed in the stiff cold breeze. It wasn’t too long before Davids float dipped subtly under the surface. There was no savage take, the float siddled under and then back up, third dip and David struck. The rod bent and then the line went slack immediately as the fish ran towards the boat. Catching up with the fish and boating a nice beautifully marked fish. Peadar followed soon afterwards with a couple of nice fish. These takes were much better with fish hitting the baits harder. As the afternoon drew in and the weather worsened the lads called it a day. A bitterly cold day was made all the more palatable with three nice winter pike.

Bags of small roach reported from Corstown Lake near Drumconrath.

David Byrne reports that the water levels are up in many of the lakes in the north east and anglers are not venturing out as often as in previous months due to the bad weather. Bags of small roach have been reported from venues such as Corstown but there has not been much in the way of coarse angling reported this week. If you are running a competition or winter league match why not submit the results and we will post it in next weeks report.

Good rainbow trout fishing reported at Curragh Springs Fishery.

Curragh Springs Fishery
The fishing was good all week at Curragh Springs in Co. Kildare with fish being caught all round lake at the beginning of the week. However, as the week progressed many fish were being caught in the margins 3 mtrs. from the bank. All the lucky anglers who have hooked one or more Curragh Springs Rainbows have been delighted by these hard fighting fish in stunning condition.
Water clarity remains very good unaffected by the recent bad spells of weather.
Favourite patterns included Damsel, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker,Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach, Buzzer, Bloodworm and even Daddy Long Legs and Hopper fished just under the surface.
The frosty nights combined with bright days during the week made things a little harder, but contrary to expectation the fish were still not deep.
Igor Szaraz from Slovakia with a fine Curragh Springs Rainbow caught on a recent visit to the fishery.

Here at Curragh Springs we have now erected new fishing stands on the North side of the lake to make things a little more comfortable while fishing.

Opening times are still 9am till dark 7 days a week during the winter, however for the early riser looking for a good day out arrangements can be made to open from 8am.

Carlow Coarse Angling Club get Children's officers and also win a Bursary Award.

Angling club get childrens officers
Members of the Carlow coarse angling club recently attended a Code of Ethics and Child Protection in Sports course ran by the Carlow Sports Partnership. Five members of the club executive committee had already completed the basic Code of Ethics course ran last month in Tullow Co.Carlow as part of a drive to introduce child protection officers into all sports clubs in Ireland. The locally based angling club have indeed been very active throughout the year completing courses that will better enable the club to function as one of the most active coarse angling clubs in the country. Courses ran by the County Carlow Sports Partnership have been very well recieved by the club and it’s committee and members. The club have had eight coaches trained this year by the Angling Council of Ireland and have ran several six week programmes with the help of the Carlow Sports Partnership, I.W.A. Carlow branch, Rehab Carlow, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Womens groups from Waterford and various other groups and organisations throughout the county and indeed country. There are also five committee members who attended and completed a First aid course ran by the Sports Partnership and Irish Sports Council.
The carlow cac are undoubtabley a new force to be reckoned with within Irish angling circles and keep going from strength to strength and making angling accesible for groups of people irregardless of their social standing or disabilities. If you would like any information regarding the Carlow cac or their activities please do not hesitate to contact Gerry mcstraw on 085 2844566 or visit www.carlowcoarseanglingguides.com for more information on the club and their previous endevours.

Carlow which included Setanta hurling and other sports groups from disiplines such as Boxing, Pitch and Putt and Martial arts amongst others. Gerry mcstraw Chairman Carlow cac, George Quinlan Treasurer Carlow cac and Ian Warburton P.R.O. Carlow cac were on hand to recieve the Bursary award on behalf of the angling club. The Carlow cac recieved the award in recognition of their efforts over the previous year to include disabled anglers into the sport of coarse angling an ever increasing sport within the country as a whole.
The club will use the well recieved Bursary award to buy the much needed equipment to run more programmes for the Irish wheelchair Ass. and Rehab Carlow amongst other groups and organisations next year. Chairman Gerry mcstraw has already entered into talks with the Carlow Sports Partnership with a view to running an eight week programme next April following the success of a six week programme ran this year.
The Carlow Cac would also like to announce that the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (N.C.F.F.I.) have selected the River Barrow in Carlow town as the venue for the first qualifiers for the 2013 World Cup, Celtic Cup and Feeder teams. The qualifiers will allow local anglers to fish alongside current world and celtic cup grade anglers for the weekend and maybe pick up a few wee tips that will enhance their angling abilities. If you would any information as regards fishing the river Barrow or indeed the Carlow Coarse Angling Club please do not hesitate to contact Gerry mcstraw on 085 2844566 or visit the very popular facebook page carlow cac.

Irish Angling Update, 01/12/11

Carrickfergus Angler, Andy Logan with a fine specimen 19 lb. bullhuss while fishing out from Red Bay wins our Catch of the Week
Carrickfergus Angler, Andy Logan with a fine specimen 19 lb. bullhuss while fishing out from Red Bay wins our Catch of the Week

Neither the cold weather nor the poor conditions of the past week put off anglers from fishing on inland waters or at sea.  Coarse anglers fishing the Dromore winter league match last Sunday on Annaghierin Lake near Shercock in Co. Cavan enjoyed some nice catches of roach and some skimmer bream.  The National Coarse Fish Federation announced a programme of float and feeder qualifiers for prospective anglers hoping to fish for Ireland in future World Coarse Angling Championships in 2012.

There was plenty of pike action in the Cavan Monaghan Lakelands in particular. Angling guide, Peadar O’Brien had a group of young anglers out in atrocious weather on a Monaghan lough but they had great sport taking some lovely pike up to double figures.  Look at the photos in the angling update to see young anglers enjoying themselves with some nice pike.  The Kells anglers association held a Christmas pike competition on Lough Ramor and a junior member Gerard McLoughlin aged 13 showed up the senior anglers taking 4 pike of 6 lb., 7 lb., 8.5 lb. and 15 lb. to take top spot.

There is a new angling boat based in Wicklow skippered by Kit Dunne and a  group of well known Cork anglers fished with Kit out on some of far out marks and enjoyed very good fishing.  Dan Lynch took a lovely specimen spurdog of 12.5 lb. and young Luke Hegarty had a lovely bullhuss.  Another well known angler Noel Lane took some excellent bullhuss and the group took many bullhuss and spurdog and several other species.  A group of shore anglers had some excellent shore angling at Tinnebearna in Co. Wexford recording flounder, codling and coalfish.  Up in Red Bay, the good deep sea fishing continues and a local group had some excellent fishing for bullhuss and conger fishing with skipper Hamish Currie.  Andy Logan from Carrickfergus took a fine specimen bullhuss of 19 lb. which wins our Catch of the Week. Charter skipper, Max Couque reported on some fine end of season fishing in the Galway Bay area taking some lovely pollack to near specimen size among a big range of species.

Down at the Curragh Springs rainbow trout fishery, a group of staff from Inland Fisheries Ireland in Swords enjoyed a very good day out recording over 30 trout up to 4.5 lb.  Up in the Cashel Trout fishery, the good rainbow trout fishing continued for groups of local anglers.  Finally many trout angling clubs do hold fly tying classes during the winter period.  You can usually get information on these courses from your local fishing tackle shop.

Good Rainbow Trout fishing enjoyed by a group of IFI staff at the Curragh Springs Fishery.

Ten anglers from the Inland Fisheries Staff in Swords fished at the Curragh Springs Rainbow Fishery last Friday.   Owner, Shaun Hegarty the owner made the group very welcome on the day.   In nice weather, there was very good fishing throughout the day and by the end of the session, over 30 fish to 4.5 lb. were recorded.  Various flies worked on the day including czech nymphs, goldhead hairs ear, various dry fly patterns and some big lures including cats whiskers and Muddler Minnows etc.   Mark Corps with his long casting recorded the greatest numbers of fish.

Please pass this message on to all interested anglers.

Update on selection of Float Teams for 2012

The CIPS meeting to decide the World and European Championship venues for Float fishing has now been delayed

by CIPS until next weekend.

PRESS RELEASE

NCFFI FLOAT AND FEEDER QUALIFIERS 2012

The NCFFI Float and Feeder Team qualifiers to select teams for the 2013 World, European and Celtic Cup teams will be fished in an All Ireland Qualifier format, to CIPS rules, over Six weekends in 2012.

The manager Mark Theedom feels that the new format of running events in all areas of Ireland, will be more inclusive and encourage many more anglers to participate in the current Ireland Team Qualifier system.

The Series will be fished on the following dates and venues (subject to fishing/water conditions on the venues selected).

1.   Sat/Sun 21/22nd April – River Barrow, Co Carlow.

2.   Sat/Sun 19/20 May – Inniscarra, Co Cork.

3.   Sat/Sun 02/03 Jun – River Shannon O’ Brien’s Bridge, Co Clare

4.   Sat/Sun 11/12 Aug – Lough Muckno, Co Monaghan.

5.   Sat/Sun 22/23 Sept- Lough Oughter, Co Cavan.

6.   Sat/Sun 20/21 Oct – Lower River Bann, Co Antrim.

It is proposed that the Float Qualifier’s will be fished on the Saturday and will also include a Junior section, the Feeder Qualifier will be fished on the Sunday on the same venue.

The series will be open to all anglers who are members of NCFFI affiliated clubs. It is hoped to create six good fishing weekends that are open and inclusive to all anglers and that dates are fully supported by all NCFFI clubs and provinces.

All senior anglers will pay 60euro entry fee for the six match series which will help fund teams travelling to the 2013 championships. Individual anglers who are not intending to fish the series but wishing to fish individual qualifiers in their local area will be charged a 15euro fee which will also go to team funds.

Optional pools with a 100% payout may be organised by the participating anglers.

Juniors will not be expected to pay any entry fee or pools.

Mark will select his Teams from the top 20 anglers in the Float Qualifiers and the top 50% of anglers taking part in the Feeder  Qualifiers.

Mark commented “Anglers are not required to fish all matches, but by adopting this system we would hope to encourage more anglers to try for the national team, obviously the more qualifiers you fish the greater the chance of selection.”

Italian tackle giant Tubertini sponsors of Tubertini Team Ireland will also sponsor tackle prizes for both events.

Wicklow Specimen Spurdog for Cork angler Dan Lynch aboard "LISIN", with charter skipper Kit Dunne.

A nice Bullhuss came to Luke Hegarty a budding young angler.

November 27th, 2011
Wicklow charter skipper Kit Dunne reports on his first trip out with a group of Cork anglers & friends fishing out of Wicklow Harbour, on the East Coast.  They came up to target the winter Spurdogs and specifically specimens, this beautiful 12.15 lb specimen fell to Dan Lynch of Halfway Angling centre, on a whole squid baited flowing trace.

Dans first Spurdog of the day took a mackerel fillet presented on a 4/0 hook

Dan with his specimen 12.5 lb. spurdog caught late in the evening.

It was only 5 minutes into the day and we had Spurdogs landed, with a racing tide conditions weren’t ideal as the day progressed, however, it didn’t stop these keen specimen hunters, they landed a total of 20 spurdogs, 3 Bullhuss and plenty of dogs. With herring still in abundance I believe we’ll have Spurs for some time yet and in much greater numbers on the offshore banks, looking forward to the next trip, Kit.
