Good Rainbow Trout fishing at the Cashel Trout Fishery Annual Competition.

Cashel Trout Fishery Annual Competition report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

On Saturday the 29th October we held our Annual Competition here at Cashel.  Mr Michael Mc Closkey (Vickey) kindly donated the three trophies.  There were many prizes up for grabs as well as trophies and the ultimate prize the Perpetual Cup.  We were very pleased with the excellent turnout of anglers all wanting to take home ‘The Cup’.  Each angler was allowed to kill five trout in the time given i.e. 10 am to 4 pm.  If and when the maximum bag limit was caught the angler had to retire and wait on the final decision. The results were as follows:

1st prize – Heaviest single fish – Pat Nicell Snr (Derry)

2nd prize – Heaviest bag of fish – Michael McKee (Limavady)

3rd prize – Second heaviest bag of fish – James Mc Feeley (Derry)

There were a total of 40 trout caught by the thirteen competitors with six of them getting the full bag limit.

It was also wonderful to see some of the tagged trout coming to the surface during this spell of warm autumnal weather.  Each tagged trout is worth £50 to the angler when caught and killed.  Two anglers, namely Martin Bradley (Dungiven) and Pat Nicell Jnr (Derry) did exceptionally well to bag a tagged trout each which fell to small nymphs and buzzers.

Also this weekend Shane Irwin and Shea Irwin (Dungiven) released one trout each which took wee brown klinkhammers while Derry’s Paul Ford released three which fell to the suspender buzzer.  Thomas Farren (Maghera) used a bloodworm to make his catch while Sergei (Latvia) bagged three weighing 4lb 9ozs.

We are taking group bookings for any angling club or corporate groups interested in a fun day.  Catering facilities are available in the adjacent Cashel Fishing Lodge.

Small fish dominate the Irish Team Qualifiers on the Boyle Canal.

Jack Tisdall reports that the weekend saw the conclusion of the NCFFI Irish Float Team Qualifiers on the Boyle Canal (due to very high water levels on the Lower River Bann).

The weekend was very successful, with good numbers of small fish being caught on the pole by the anglers in fine, mild weather conditions.  Day one saw Dublin angler Bob Hume win the overall with 2.240 Kgs (98 fish) on the pole at 8 and 11m on peg 17.   Runner up was David Herron (Co Tyrone) with 2.120 Kgs (95 fish) on peg 5, while Francis McGoldrick (Co Cavan) was third on peg 20 with 1.780 Kgs (82 fish). The other section was won by Rory Dunne (Co Rosscommon) 1.620 Kgs (57fish) peg 14.  A calm second day saw an improvement in the fishing with the individual winner being Rory Dunne 2.570 Kgs (121 fish) on peg 9.  Runner up was Finton Brennan (Co Kildare) 2.530 Kgs (89fish) on peg 18, with Francis McGoldrick 2.400 Kgs (126 fish) third peg 10.  Garry Radcliffe (Co Antrim) .880 Kgs (44fish) won the third section.

The overall qualifier League winner was Tommy Dowd (Co Cavan) with a best 4 match total of 6 points. A total of 28 anglers fished the Qualifiers this year with an average turnout of 20 anglers per match.  Mark Theedom the Ireland Team manager will now select his 2012 Float Teams from the top 19 anglers in the overall standings.  Teams will be announced following the CIPS November committee meeting, when the 2012 Float venues are confirmed.

2011 IFSA Boat Fish-Offs report

IFSA boat fish offs in Cork Harbour

Cobh SAC hosted the IFSA Boat Fish-Offs over the October bank holiday weekend. The best anglers in the country were pitting their wits against each other in an attempt to make the national team for the World Championships in South Africa in 2012.

This year, the competing 32 anglers sure had their work cut out for them. The weather on Saturday, the first day, was appalling with gale force winds, driving rain, and heavy seas making for very difficult conditions. The fishing as you would expect was very slow. This was further compounded by the storm of the previous Sunday which not only dumped a lot of rain on the South coast, but also kicked up a considerable swell, which hadn’t abated by the time the competition started. As a result the water was extremely coloured and there was a lot of ‘fresh’ coming down the river. This was reflected in the fishing on Saturday which was slow. Despite this anglers averaged approx 40 fish per man over the two sessions. That’s the beauty of Cork Harbour…despite nearly storm conditions it is still fishable, and fish will be caught!!!

On Sunday conditions were much improved and with it the fishing improved dramatically also. Most anglers averaged 60 – 80 fish, with the top rods recording over 100 fish. The four charter boats from the Cork Harbour Angling Hub fleet this time stayed put on the western edges of the channel dropping into ‘deep hole.’ The day before most had started here but opted to anchor on the eastern side for the flood to target the hordes of whiting, which didn’t materialise. Nobody was going to take the chance on the Sunday. Despite this whiting did feature in the catches and some fine sized fish amongst them. Dabs were also plentiful with many touching specimen size. Other fish to feature included lsd’s, codling, pouting, poor cod, and plaice. By competition’s end over 2000 fish had been recorded.

Congratulations to the top five finishers; Kit Dunne, Mick Barry, Gordon Darker, Dave Jolly, and Tony Santry who join Captain Myles Howell, who had qualified from the Masters, on the Irish Team. For the full results have a look here.

Many thanks to the skippers Donie Geary (John Boy), Gerry Keohane (Naomh Cartha), John Geary (Lee Star), and Alan Kennedy (Lagosta II) who, despite the conditions, kept the lads on the fish!

Pike anglers in Longford area get some good fish

Well known top Pike angler Jouke Jansma from Holland decided to check out the Pike fishing in Ireland and stayed with Kevin and Jane Lyons at Melview Lodge in Longford, various methods were use however Jerk baits produced the most fish. Kevin said the weather was extremely bad on a few of the days and the rain and very high winds forced us to fish from the banks of different venues, however we still manage to catch some nice Pike on the Jerk baits.

All smiles for Jeff Anderson from the UK midlands.

Father and son Jeff & Stewart Anderson form the UK midlands were over for their annual Pike fishing trip to Ireland and once again decided to stay at Melview Lodge in Longford and be guided by Kevin. Fishing mainly dead baits they managed Pike to 19lb with smaller Pike falling to lures. Jeff and Stewart are no strangers to Ireland and it’s weather and a few of the days were very bad with high winds and rain making it very difficult to fish some places, however they stuck it out and managed to produce some good fish.

They are already looking forward to spring next year to return and catch the one’s that got away.

Good Pike fishing reported from the North East

East Coast Pike Fishing

Recent heavy rain has put the water levels up in many of the lakes in the north east over the last few weeks but despite this, pike anglers have been diligently working away and making the best of the adverse weather and water conditions. Many have been rewarded with some fine catches recently.  On Lough Bracken, Paul Martin of Ardee Pike Angling Club landed a beautiful 21 lb. 12 oz fish on Monday last 31st October.  The fish was in excellent condition as can be seen in the photograph below.  Good numbers of jacks are also been taken at this venue.

Paul Martin of Ardee Pike Anglers proudly displays his fine 21 lb 12 oz pike from Lough Bracken

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien also reports that many venues are flooded and pike fishing can be difficult at some locations.  Peadar fished with David Byrne over the bank holiday weekend and despite the changeable conditions they had 5 pike to the boat.  Nothing too big but the fish still provided excellent sport.  All fish were taken on lures and the best period of activity was in the late afternoon.

If you fancy a days pike angling with Peadar he can be contacted at [email protected]

David Byrne shows one of the smaller but more cooperative pike taken over the weekend

Also over the bank holiday weekend Ronan O’Brien IFI reports that one angler had three nice pike at Black Island. The fish weighed 6 kg., 7 kg. and 9 kg.  An excellent result taking the high water conditions into account.  Numbers of smaller pike to 4 kgs. are also being taken at Whitewood Lake, Ballyhoe and Quiglough.

Cork harbour winter light line series

Cobh SAC has successfully run light line competitions in Cork Harbour over the last two Winter seasons. Once again Cobh SAC will be running a series of these competitions over the next few Winter months. The first of these will be on next Sunday week, the 13th of November.

These competitions are open to all comers and are not restricted to just Cobh SAC members, nor do you have to be a member of another club. They are intended to be fun competitions and

appeal to all levels of anglers, whether you are a novice or a seasoned campaigner. Indeed, there has been a diverse mix of experience between the anglers who have fished these comps so far and all have had good fishing. The average number of fish caught per angler per day over the 12 competitions so far has been 38 fish. Now that’s a good return and ensures that even the raw beginners have something to shout about!!!
In a few of the comps some of the anglers have had over 120 fish…that’s some fishing! Species to expect within the Harbour over these months would include Cod, Whiting, Dabs, Lsd’s, Poor Cod, Pouting, Coalfish, Flounder, & Plaice. At the moment Dabs will feature highly and some of these will be to specimen size. As the Winter progresses Cod will feature more and more in the catches. In previous March and April comps it wasn’t unusual for anglers to average over 50+ codling in their catch. To give you some idea of the fishing have a look at some of the reports of previous events herehere, and here. Best baits to use in the comps will be crab, lug, mack, and rag.

The scorecard used for the competitions is the same as that used for the National Fish-Offs. Indeed, the set-up of the comp is identical almost to the National Fish-Offs competition. As a result the light lines are ideal events for the more seasoned anglers to get in practice for these

comps. For the less seasoned angler it’s a chance to see how they measure up to the high standards of the top anglers in the country. In any event there is a lot that all anglers can learn.
To make the light lines easier this season there has been a slight change of rule. Instead, of all lines (ie. mainline, rig bodies, & snood) meeting the 15lb b.s. or lower criteria the only stipulation now is that the mainline should be 15lb b.s. or less. This means that you can use a shockleader of any strength and your rig bodies and snoods can also be of any strength.
The competitions will be run on the following dates over the Winter months:

Sunday 13th November 2011

Sunday 11th December 2011

Sunday 22nd January 2012

Sunday 19th Febuary 2012

Sunday 25th March 2012

Sunday 22th April 2012

Fishing will be from 9:30am till 2:30pm each day with boats departing from Kennedy Pier, Cobh at 9am. Boats used will be from the Cork Harbour Angling Hub charter fleet. The cost of entry is €40 per angler. Now that’s great value!!!

To book your place for Sunday 13th November contact Cobh SAC club secretary, Mary Geary, on 021-4812167 or by email on [email protected]. Come on now….you know its good for ya!!!

Ps. To add an extra element this year, we are accumulating the results over the series of comps on a league basis, similar to a master angler series. So who’s going to be the top light line angler in Cork Harbour for 2011/12? Will it be you?

Also, for those anglers travelling, we’ve negotiated a special deal with the Commodore Hotel if overnight accommodation is required (Oct – March). Bed & breakfast will be available at €29 per person!!!

Irish Angling Update – 27/10/11

Glenn Drennan wins catch of the week for this 183lb skate caught unexpectedly on light gear

The massive deluge of rain which fell across the east coast and elsewhere caused massive flooding, the effects of which are still visible days later. Many river are still running bank full with surrounding land under inches of water. For coarse and pike anglers fishing was ruled out at many venues. Being less affected by the floods fly anglers managed to enjoy some good sport at rainbow fisheries. Sea anglers too had good sport at a number of venues, and the east coast shore marks were fishing well until the weather deteriorated.

Before the huge downpour of rain over the weekend much of the mid top upper Shannon, midlands and Erne catchments were already in flood so there is little to report from the coarse angling scene. Legih Maitland reports that the competition fished on the Boyle Canal on Sunday was a difficult affair, but that the anglers stuck it out and Shane Dunne was the eventual winner with 4.480kg. On Lough Erne, Kevin Ashurst finished his season in Ireland with an estimated 100lb of bream.

East Coast Angling had their first pike competition of the season at Shercock last week, where 11 pike were caught by 24 anglers. Colm himself had better fishing in the midlands with John Baker. They had four fish for 64 lb, the best one weighing 24.5 lb. Franck Guglielmi and friends from Corsica fished with angling guide Pat Mc Loughlin. The visiting group had 44 pike for their weeks fishing and Franck had the best fish, a great pike of 111cm.

Catch of the Week goes to Glenn Drennan for his 183lb skate caught on a 12lb class rod with a light fluoro hook length. Glenn was fishing with Terry Jackson and friends and they had some great pollack, blonde rays and cuckoo wrasse at inshore marks despite the rough conditions at sea. Over the last week flounder numbers started to gather in the South Wicklow and Wexford estuaries. Good numbers of flounders have been caught and best bait has been peeler crab or crab/lug cocktails. Anglers are asked to bring a good quality disgorger to ensure safe unhooking when practicing catch and release. There has also been a noticeable improvement in numbers of bass taken by shore anglers on the Wexford and Wicklow beaches. Again crab baits are fishing best. If the weather settles for a bit then there is always the chance of some tope from the north Wicklow beaches. Anglers targeting shore tope get the best results a few days after Westerly winds which allows time for the weed to drop out of the sea.  The winter cod season has kicked off in earnest in Cork Harbour with  reports of good cod catches at the Harbour’s prolific inner marks such as “De Wall” at Monkstown, the Station Master’s hole and the Halfpenny hole at Cobh.

Paul Kay won the 1st qualifier of the Rathcon Winter League Competition was held on Saturday the 22nd of October.  16 anglers fished the day and in total 46 rainbow trout were landed on a variety of lures and buzzers. A Ladies Fly Casting Day also took place on Saturday.  Annamoe fishery hosted the event in aid of Action Breast Cancer. 12 ladies took part and they caught 25 rainbow trout up to 3 lbs. Everyone enjoyed the fishing and over €500 was raised for the charity. Staying at Annamoe, Patrick McDonnell won Heat 1 of the Annamoe Winter League. Although the conditions were good for dry fly such as Daddy Longlegs most anglers opted for lures, small nymphs and boobies on sink tips. Congratulations to the Irish bank fly fishing team who came a very respectable second in the 2011 Home International Bank Fly Fishing Championship held on Barfinnihy lake, Kenmare Co Kerry. This is the second such competition to be held and is set to grow into a major home nation’s event into the future. Congratulations also go to Ireland’s Terry Kelly who took the individual gold on the day.

Weather for the weekend looks like it will be windy and wet, with heavy persistent rain spreading from the west in a strong southerly breeze. The outlook for early next week has more rain but the winds should moderate.

Tight lines to all,

Paul Bourke

Winter cod fishing going well in Cork Harbour

Pat O'Shea with a codling caught just inside Cork Harbour

The winter cod season has kicked off in earnest in Cork Harbour with some encouraging reports of good cod catches at some of the Harbour’s prolific inner marks such as “De Wall” at Monkstown, the Station Master’s hole and the Halfpenny hole at Cobh.

Donie Geary, skipper of the John Boy, is targeting these winter cod and is offering special discounted rates this Winter for groups of anglers keen to get in on the cod action. Geary Angling Services, in conjunction with the Commodore Hotel, are offering a special rate of €69 to cover one days fishing onboard the John Boy plus one night’s bed & breakfast at the Commodore Hotel. You can further upgrade that package to include an evening meal of Haddock in batter and chips and a pint of Guinness (or a beer/lager of your choice), all for the sum of €85 in total. Now that’s great value!!! This offer is valid for winter cod fishing trips from Oct 2011 thru to March 2012 and is limited to groups of eight or more.

If the last two winter seasons are anything to go by then the cod fishing should get hectic. Cobh Sea Angling Club have held light line competitions during this winter period and in many cases anglers were catching 50+ codling a trip. Have a look at these reports to give you an idea:

Admittedly, many of the codling have been in the 1 – 2lb range. However, a good proportion of the catch have also been in the 3-4lb range. This year we expect many of the fish to be bigger again as there has been superb fishing on the offshore reefs for large cod over the summer. In fact, if weather permits Donie may opt to try the outer reefs for larger fish. However, the beauty of Cork Harbour is that it can be fished in all weathers and many of the marks that have been producing over the last two winters have been in the Harbour itself.

Best baits for the fishing is undoubtedly peeler crab and lugworm. Mussel can also be effective. If the outer reefs are fished then mackerel baited hokkai’s are the best option.

Make a booking

If you and your group would be interested in targeting the cod then Mary Geary of Geary Angling Services would only be too happy to give you as much information as possible. Give Mary a buzz on 021 – 4812167 or email on [email protected], or alternatively you can contact Mary O’ Mahony at reservations at the Commodore Hotel on 021-4811277 or by email on [email protected].
