Cashel Trout Fishery Annual Competition report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

On Saturday the 29th October we held our Annual Competition here at Cashel.  Mr Michael Mc Closkey (Vickey) kindly donated the three trophies.  There were many prizes up for grabs as well as trophies and the ultimate prize the Perpetual Cup.  We were very pleased with the excellent turnout of anglers all wanting to take home ‘The Cup’.  Each angler was allowed to kill five trout in the time given i.e. 10 am to 4 pm.  If and when the maximum bag limit was caught the angler had to retire and wait on the final decision. The results were as follows:

1st prize – Heaviest single fish – Pat Nicell Snr (Derry)

2nd prize – Heaviest bag of fish – Michael McKee (Limavady)

3rd prize – Second heaviest bag of fish – James Mc Feeley (Derry)

There were a total of 40 trout caught by the thirteen competitors with six of them getting the full bag limit.

It was also wonderful to see some of the tagged trout coming to the surface during this spell of warm autumnal weather.  Each tagged trout is worth £50 to the angler when caught and killed.  Two anglers, namely Martin Bradley (Dungiven) and Pat Nicell Jnr (Derry) did exceptionally well to bag a tagged trout each which fell to small nymphs and buzzers.

Also this weekend Shane Irwin and Shea Irwin (Dungiven) released one trout each which took wee brown klinkhammers while Derry’s Paul Ford released three which fell to the suspender buzzer.  Thomas Farren (Maghera) used a bloodworm to make his catch while Sergei (Latvia) bagged three weighing 4lb 9ozs.

We are taking group bookings for any angling club or corporate groups interested in a fun day.  Catering facilities are available in the adjacent Cashel Fishing Lodge.
