Two pike save the day on Lene

pike

Photo: Noel caught this 13lb lLough Lene pike on a Bass Harasser

After a few cold hours trolling some lost fish and ripped up lures, the heavens opened it lashed down and a mist covered the lake we were really tested by the conditions but we persevered and produce a few nice fish. At about four pm Noel decided it was time for the magical bass harasser to come out and within minutes he was on to a 13lb pike that put up a super fight before we finally got the net in the water and boated it. After a few quick snaps we released it and started back on the troll.

Five minutes went by and Noel had just said to get the tea out when I felt something take the lure and with a few thumps on the rod I and knew I was on and this one wasn’t going to get away. After an energetic few jumps we boated the small pike and it turned out to be 6 lb another few snaps and it was released and sent home. These fish saved the day for us, Thanks for recommending Lene, needless to say we’ll going back for more and hopefully next time we’ll get the one that got away.

Derg pike to 15lb on spinner and fly

pike

Photo: Cathy got the best fish of the two days estimated at around 15lbs

Brian Coughlan and wife Cathy were out fishing on Lough Derg last week. We rented a Boat from Fisherman’s Paradise and had Richard Mc Dermot as a guide for one of the two days we fished.

Cathy got the best fish of the two days estimated at around 15lbs, this is her first pike. She caught it on a cast 30g Abu Toby. It put up a great fight and as you can see she was delighted.

Overall, For the two days we managed 14 fish, 8 to cast spinners and 6 to the fly rod. The best fish to the fly rod was just less than 8lbs. The killer fly’s were EP fibre white and green deceivers tied on size 4 Ad Swier hooks.

Some much larger Pike were moved, hooked and lost on the fly rod around Lushag Rocks. Two of the White Tailed Sea Eagles were also seen on the second morning.

Trout fishing improving on Lough Corrib

Fishing is reasonably good on Lough Corrib at the moment, and John Walsh reports from Cornamona-Greenfields that 19 anglers reported 35 trout in 41 rod-days, mostly taken on wetfly, predominantly dabblers and Green Peter patterns. A party of 3 rods staying at Larry McCarthy’s Corrib View Lodge, John Cash, Vaughan Rutley and Richard Haskins from the UK, landed 8 good fish over 3 days fishing, including a nice trout of 3 lb. Frank Guilfoyle Sr. and son Frank Jr., from Ennis, landed 3 fish for their day out, while Sean Dixon from Ennis had 2 trout for his day on the lake. Mike Lambert and Jack Coyle from Antrim landed 5 trout for 8.25 lb. over 2 days, and Michael Jones and Christopher Dodd from Wales landed 7 trout over 2 days, all sportingly released again.  September is usually a good month on Corrib and Mask, with water temperatures cooling down slightly and fish becoming more active, so fishing prospects here are pretty good over the next few weeks.
