The good season for salmon fishing continues on the River Erriff

Fishery manager Jim Stafford reports from the River Erriff on fishing up to Saturday last. Water levels varied on the river during the week with a good spate fining down on Saturday the 3rd. Robert Devriese, Dublin caught 5 fish for 3 days fishing on a Silver Cascade and Shrimp Fly. Tobias Stern, Austria, a regular annual overseas rod on the Erriff caught 7 for the week – mainly on various Cascades and Shrimp patterns. Dr. John Casey, Clifden caught 3 in 1 day on a Collie Dog in Nee’s Run and the Colonel’s Pool on Beat 6. Conor O’Leary, Dublin returned one of 6 lb. taken on a Daddy in Yellow Banks on Beat 5.  Patrick Gorman, Cong had 2 in a morning’s fishing on Beat 9. Enda Kenny, Enfield, Co. Meath caught a sparkling fresh grilse in the Coronation Pool on a Shadow Cascade. Rene Boutonnet, France, another annual overseas visitor to the Erriff caught 5 and 1 good sea trout and lost several more good fish for the week – Rene caught 3 salmon in one day in the Upper Garden Pool on a Shrimp Fly.  It was a red letter day for Derek Killeen, Dublin who caught his first ever salmon and went on to catch another 2 – all fish were taken on a Claret Dabbler on Yellow Banks on Beat 5. Richard and Hugh Maguire had one each taken on a Silver Stoat and Cascade in the Sally Pool on Beat 7. Local angler Stuart Fleming and Paddy Lynch, Dublin caught six brown trout on Derrintin Lough in an afternoon.  The catch for the week was 28 salmon (16 released) and 9 sea trout which includes 1 salmon and 4 sea trout from Tawnyard Lough.  At the time of writing the report there is a massive spate of 2.1 meters so water levels will be good for the next number of days

Very good salmon fishing reported from Lough Inagh

salmon

Photo: The record-breaking 86th fish was landed by ghillie Ulrich Treusch

Fishery manager Colin Folan reports from Lough Inagh, that the previous season record of 85 salmon has been smashed in style, with 8 fish landed by 5 rods on Monday to bring the season total so far to 91 salmon. The record-breaking 86th fish was landed by ghillie Ulrich Treusch, a 6 lb. fish taken at the Glendallogh Butts on a Cascade. It was Ulrich’s second fish of the day, having earlier caught and released a 7 lb. fish at Greenpoint. Colin himself had a fish from Corloo on a Stoats Tail, weighing 6 lb. Matt Davy (Dublin), caught his personal best fish yesterday, weighing 7.75 lb. from The Derryclare Butts on a Claret Shrimp. Water levels have risen dramatically now on Inagh, and good fishing is expected for the coming week, when it is possible the magic 100 fish barrier may be broken for the first time.

Now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny, Mr. Walter Ruche of Switzerland caught a fine 6.5 lb. salmon with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly and of www.lakelandshouse.com Max air temperature 18.3°C.
1/9/11 Now today’s facts, In the C&R department Mr. Sean Smith and his Father, Mr. Michael Smith from the UK caught 3 Juniors with their ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea – www.oshealoughcurrane.com and staying in the sea trout C&R department, Mr. David Burton, caught 4 Juniors, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea – [email protected] Also in good form was young Archie Curnow, with a fine sea trout of 2 lb. and added a few Juniors to his basket, fishing with his Uncle, Mr. John Curnow of Kinsale Co Cork. Wind SE Light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Amount of rainfall 0.8 mm, Max air temperature 18.6°C.
2/9/11 Mr. David Burton fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea – [email protected] was in good form with 3 Juniors on the drift, which were all put back, and staying with Sea Trout, Mr. Mark Baxter, fishing in a hired out boat from Waterville Boats – [email protected] caught 7 sea trout all in the Junior class Wind SW light to calm with the odd gust with reasonable cloud cover, Amount of rainfall 11.1 mm, max air temperature 17.8°C.
3/9/11 There was some cracking fishing Around the Waterville Fishery today, so we will start with the lake, in the specimen sea trout department, Mr Edwin O’Connor caught a cracker of a sea trout on the fly weighing in at 10 lb. 6 oz. fishing in a hired out boat from Waterville Boats – [email protected] and there was another 10 lb. sea trout also on the fly, now we will cut across the Valley to the River Inny and catch of the day, and that goes to Young Archie Curnow of the UK, because he caught two good salmon weighing in at 11.5 lb. and 8.5 lb. and his uncle, Mr. John Curnow, finished day off with a Grilse on the fly, staying with the Inny, there was another good rod bender, Mr. David Burton, caught a fine 10 lb. salmon, with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea – [email protected] Wind SSE light with reasonable cloud cover at times, amount of rainfall, 0.6mm, max air temperature 16.4°C.
4/9/11 It was a wild day on Lough Currane today even though a few boats headed out this morning, but come lunch time thy were all blown off, so we will head for the River Inny, and that didn’t fair much better because it made a flood this morning so the river was dirty for a while. But one Angler did catch a fine grilse on the lower reaches just before it got dirty, and that was local Angler Mr. Mike Thian. Wind SW Strong and overcast with heavy showers, amount of rainfall 11.8 mm, max air temperature 15.5°C.  In the last few days the Prince fishing with his ghillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan –www.vincentsfishing.com caught 17 sea trout on the fly, ranging from Juniors up to 2 lb.

Fair to good salmon fishing reported from the Cork and Kerry fisheries

Laune, Beats 1 and 2

3 salmon landed, 1 from beat 1 and 2 from beat 2, averaging 7 lb. by local anglers for the weekended 4th September.

———-

As of Monday 5th September water at 2 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s.  Water risen again over night and running fairly clear.  No Sign so far of dirty water from the Gweestin which could probably colour it tomorrow after more heavy rain tonight.

I would say that prospects for the next few days are very good, the only problem being strong winds and fluctuating water levels.

One angler fishing at Johnston’s today met five fish and landed four the best a sea liced fish of 8 lbs.

Low water levels impacting on good salmon fishing on the River Fane

Fishing conditions have improved slightly on last week on the Fane. There are plenty of Salmon in the River, but due to the water level still low the Salmon are slow to take. It looks like we should get more rain this week and this will help improve the fishing. John Boyle from Crossmaglen had one Salmon yesterday and lost one as well as reports of other fish caught and lost. From now on anyone fishing on the lower part of the river-below Craigs Pool has a fair chance of getting a Salmon.
