Senan Stanely was back out guiding in the lakeboat on Sunday, traditional style! He had his favourite two limerick men back out again. Ray and Jamie arrived with a fresh hangovers but they kept Senan busy all day as the net man. There were 11 pike landed and a few more lost, and a new PB for Jamie.

Also out guiding was Paul Bourke in his state of the art fishing boat with GPS trolling motors and all the best electronic fish finders. He also had a few nice pike to boat for his clients.

A new PB for Senan, 115cm

Senan Stanely was out on Lough Ree with Brian Connaughton of WildHunter over the Bank holiday and managed a new PB pike, our Catch of the Week, as well as some lovely dropshot perch…

One of Brian’s pike

An early start this on Saturday with a long drive with Brian. We found several nice fish through the day, but a 115cm whopper was the best for me! Amazing fish in amazing condition, the power these fish hit the lure with, wow, I love it!

We also had some perch fishing in the morning for a bit of fun, what a day!

Blankety blank cheque book and pen for Currane Anglers

Bank holiday sunshine at Waterville
Bank holiday sunshine at Waterville

Vincent Appleby reports from the shore of Lough Currane…

30/5/2024 My WhatsApple was all quiet be it fly lines or trolling lines this day. Wind NE light to fresh and variable, followed by reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 1.5mm, amount of sunshine 3.2, maximum air temperature 15.4°C.

Bank holiday sunshine at Waterville
Bank holiday sunshine at Waterville

31/5/2024 This June Bank holiday weekend starts with a blankety blank check book and pen and considering the sun blazing down on Lough Currane that’s not surpising, wind NE light. Now we head for yesterday’s weather, amount of rain fall 0.3mm, amount of sunshine 2.3, maximum air temperature 13.5°C.

1/6/2024 There were six Currane boats out manipulating their skills on this bright and sunny day, just for the record there wasn’t a cloud in sight, the same goes for the Salmon, need I say more. Wind light NNE, yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0mm, amount of sunshine 13.7, maximum air temperature 16.1°C, rainfall for the month of May 59.0mm.

2/6/2024 Another bright and sunny day on this Bank Holiday, you can say that it was a perfect day for a Fogarty’s 99 as it is every day, as the Currane anglers have melt down while fishing in all departments.

Wind NNE light, followed by reasonable clear skies, yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0mm, amount of sunshine 15.0, maximum air temperature 17.3°C.

3/6/2024 There were six boats out manipulating their skills but sadly all lines were all quiet going by my WhatsApple? Wind NNW followed by reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0mm, amount of sunshine 0.8, maximum air temperature 18.5°C.

4/6/2024 The Currane anglers were all quiet this day except for their natural language for the lack of reel action, need I say more, I certainly will if I get breaking news. Wind fresh NNW, followed by reasonable cloud cover, just for record there were a few heavy showers this morning. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.1,  amount of sunshine 0.9, maximum air temperature 15.4°C.

5/6/2024 The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments but to be fair the lake is on the low side and just for the record I’m not trying to make an excuse for the lack of catches. Wind NW fresh, followed by the odd shower and reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 3.3mm, amount of sunshine 5.5, maximum air temperature 14.6°C.

6/6/2024 The Currane anglers reports are getting like the American tv soap Peyton Place and is like a one repeating continuous old 45 record and that doesn’t say much for me either, need I say more. Wind light to fresh coming from the West, followed by the odd shower and reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall a trace, amount of sunshine 4.7, maximum air temperature 14.1°C.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Water still low on Laune but better fishing reported

wading
Fishing the Laune

Water levels remained low in the Killarney area last week with the Flesk, lakes and Laune all at summer levels.

There were no reports of salmon caught on the Flesk but anglers did report 4 salmon averaging 5lb on the lake, all trolling.

Further down the system on the Laune there were 3 salmon reported from Johnsons Fishery and 1 from Beat 3. The fish were all between 7.5 and 9lb and were all caught spinning.

Munster Blackwater steadily improving

Alex arrived from the UK this morning and did not take her long to show the men at Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery how it's done
Alex arrived from the UK on Friday morning and did not take her long to show the men at Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery how it's done

Fishing reported to be steadily improving this past week on the Munster Blackwater with rewards of some smashing fresh fish landed.

With the rise in daytime temperatures, some enthusiasts were venturing out in the afternoon & evening and we have had report of sea trout also showing in the system which adds to the experience.

River conditions are perfect and with no rain of any great amount predicted for the coming week, this should not change.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

2024 Salmon & Sea Trout Angling logbook returns

salmon regs

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is encouraging salmon and sea trout anglers to return angling logbooks (setting out their fishing and catch record) and any unused gill tags from 2024 within 7 days of licence expiry or if they have ceased fishing for this year.

Under the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme, anglers can return these in one of three ways:

1. Using the postage pre-paid business return envelope that was supplied at the time of licence purchase (preferred option).

2. Posting the logbook and unused gill tags to the IFI office address that is displayed on their licence or logbook.

3. Scanning and emailing logbook and licence documents to [email protected] (please scan all sides of documents, including continuation pages, to ensure that the licence names and number can be correctly linked to the logbook).

These returns provide vital information regarding the status and management of our wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout stocks into the future.

Reminder

In accordance with the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme, anglers in Ireland are required by law to return their completed logbook (setting out their fishing and catch record) and all unused tags to the issuing office of Inland Fisheries Ireland within 7 days of licence expiry.

As part of the Scheme, an angler must attach a valid gill tag to a salmon (any size) or sea trout (over 40cm) harvested, immediately on landing. They must enter details of their catch and/or gill-tag used into their logbook.

Lurgan Van Den Eynde Coarse Angling Club in the medals again

Last year, Lurgan Coarse Angling Club exceeded all expectations and won the World Feeder Club Championships on home ground at Lough Muckno. This year, they travelled to Portugal to defend their title. The odds were stacked against them, as they were fishing on foreign turf, for a fish species they rarely fish for (carp) with one of the smallest teams at the competition.

Their inexperience with the species showed on the practice days, as they took a while to get to grips with the setup. But they are not world champs for nothing, and they quickly figured out tactics to tackle the competition. They fished well on day one and were 12th place overall at the end of the day. Day two saw them set out with a bit of confidence and they fished hard all day, managing to finish ahead of everyone else for that session.

So, they thought they had put in a creditable performance in defence of their title, but as the count went on, it seemed that they had done a bit better than that, and when the results were released, they found that they had managed a fantastic 2nd place finish, with only local Portuguese team Folhadosa Fishing ahead of them.

Winning a gold medal last year was exceptional, but to follow it up with a silver this year is truly remarkable. Hats off to the team and everyone who helped them on their way. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Baggers bag £400 for trip to Slovenia

The VDE Baggers held a fundraiser last weekend for their upcoming trip to Slovenia to fish the World Club Float Championships. Members were out in their droves to support the team, as 40 of them lined up on the River Blackwater, creating a great buzz on the day.

The fishing was a bit patchy, with some areas fishing very well, while other spots were pretty slow. If you were in one of the hot spots, you had a good chance of a decent bag, and so it proved for Raimondas, who put in a great performance to weigh in over 26kg in winning the match.

Second place went to Grzegorz Bojczewski with just under 19kg and third place went to Dawid with just over 16kg. Section winners were, Dominykas, Frank Smith, Jamie Murray, Bartek, Meeky and Michael Tesar. The Baggers will be back on the banks again for another fundraiser on 30th June.

Whitewood Pike Anglers hold Bank Holiday Float Tube 2-Dayer

Whitewood PAC used their free time over the bank holiday weekend to head for the Shannon system where they held a couple of legs of their float tube league. Anglers used a mix of different methods including wobbling deadbaits, lure and fly fishing. On day one, 18 anglers paddled out and bagged 149 fish, with the biggest a 10lb+ fish for Jody Kiernan.

Day 1 results:
1st day 1 Jody Kiernan 18 pike for 80-10.
2nd Alan Heasley 14 fish 51-8
3rd Sean Markey 15 fish 44-4.

Day 2 saw 15 anglers compete, and they managed 103 fish, with the largest fish of 9lb+ going to Tommy Coffee.

Day 2 Results:
1st Alan Heasley 10 fish for 42-1.
2nd Mark Kiernan 16 fish 39-2
3rd Tommy Coffey 9 fish 36-11.]

River Dodder hosts ITFFA Leinster River Qualifier

Dublin’s River Dodder played host to 13 competitors in the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association’s Leinster River Qualifiers last weekend. The event was sponsored by well-known Dublin tackle shop Rory’s Fishing Tackle, and it was great to see an urban river holding an event like this. The fishing on the Dodder did not disappoint, as some prolific hatches of fly, including various olives and iron blue duns in particular, saw a total of 166 trout over 18cm caught in this catch-and-release event.

It just goes to show what a gem of a river this is, and it is no wonder it attracts anglers from all around the capital and further afield. At the measure up, it was David May from the North Kildare Anglers who finished top of the rankings, just ahead of a couple of Dodder Anglers members, Glen McCrave and Stephen Potts.

The top five were as follows:
1st David May, North Kildare Anglers
2nd Glen McCrave, Dodder Anglers
3rd Stephen Potts, Dodder Anglers
4th Brian Larkin, Dundalk Anglers
5th Joe Winders, North Kildare Anglers

Best of luck to the Leinster team who will take part in the 2025 National competition.
