Pike a bit bite-shy, but tench on top form for Newbridge Anglers

The Newbridge & District Pike Anglers opted for a bit of luxury on their latest fishing excursion and headed up to Tipi Fishing Adventures for a weekend of piking and a bit of coarse fishing. Some of the group opted to head up early and try for some tench on the Friday night, and they were chuffed with their decision when they found the tench to be feeding avidly and some super fish to 5lb were netted.

The following day was the first of two days of pike fishing, but unfortunately, the pike were less obliging than the tench, and while 45 fish were caught, the biggest was only 8lb. On the Sunday they opted to bank fish, and had to cut the competition short due to poor weather. Again, the larger pike did not show, and the best fish of the day was just over 10lb. Despite the poor piking, the quality of the setup impressed them so much that they plan to revisit next year. See the full report on the Newbridge District Pike Anglers Facebook Page.

Dave Edwards gets the first blue shark of the year (again)

Dave Edwards with the first blue shark of 2024 wins Catch of the Week

David Edwards, skipper of the Silver Dawn at  West Cork Charters,  who caught the first poerbeagle of 2024, reports on the first blue shark of the year…

24 May: With a settled day in the weather I thought I would head offshore for a very early attempt at a Blue Shark. After all I haven’t had any sharks since January. Admittedly I haven’t tried since then either.

I thought that I had missed my chance when a large Blue rolled suddenly and bit through my trace.

Four more followed in quick succession, being alone and having recently broken 2 ribs, I knew I couldn’t get the larger fish on board but I did manage to bring a smaller 175cm (2 meter LOA) shark on for tagging.

Catch of the week – the first blue shark of 2024

Exhausted and sore from playing and landing and tagging and safely releasing the sharks I made my way slowly back to shore.

Great to see so many large females arriving this early, hopefully it’s a sign that the crack down on shark finning is showing results.

Summer Species show up for South Shore SAC

The members of South Shore SAC were on Kilgorman Strand for the latest round of their Master Angler competition. And, as we are nearing the end of May, and temperatures have been rising, they were hoping to see some summer species in the catches.

A fine looking east coast smoothie

When a 90cm smoothhound was beached by Michael O’Sullivan on his first cast, things were certainly looking promising for the competitors. It wasn’t the only smoothie of the day, and anglers made the most of the bit of variety, landing flatties, dogs, schoolies and a very nice adult bass for Ruari Coleman.

Plenty of smoothie action

So, after an eventful day, it was John Keane who clocked up a win as he topped Zone B with seven quality fish. Chris Scanlon claimed a zone win as he finished top of the rankings on Zone A. For a full report, see the South Shore SAC Facebook Page.

A few salmon last week on Lough Lein and the Laune

Killarney Lake
Purple Mountain over Muckross Lake,Muckross, Killarney Co. Kerry.

Anglers reported 3 salmon from Lough Leane to the week ended 26 May. There were 2 at 6lbs each and one weighing 1.5lbs all caught trolling.

Low water on the Laune did put a complete stop to the catches there. Beat 3 saw one salmon weighing 8lb caught spinning and there was another fish around the same size reported at Johnsons, also on spinner.

Reports of grilse on Blackwater, springers also caught

salmon
The weather on Saturday did not dampen the spirits of some of the guests at Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery. First in was French angler Raphael with a lovely sea-liced fish...

Rain last week saw a small rise in the Munster Blackwater with the levels dropping back all week until Sunday when they started to rise again.

There was no great improvement in angler numbers/activity wintnessed by staff patrolling the system last week. Most anglers encountered were fishing below Fermoy. Some fish were met and the reports of some grilse appearing was promising.

It’s hoped that the recent rain may create a stir when it levels off and fish may start to move up from the tidal & lower reaches.

Wrecks producing fine pollack for Wicklow Boat Charters

After an early May trip to the wrecks didn’t produce a whole lot for Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters, he was hoping a second visit this week would lead to some better results. And it seems a couple of weeks made the difference, as there were plenty of pollack, including some good lumps, and a few coalie and pouting thrown in for variety.

Plenty of fish at Kilmore Quay for group from Kent Stainless

There were beautiful weather conditions for the Kent Stainless Fishing Society outing off the Saltees at Kilmore Quay last weekend. The guys bagged 120 fish, including Wrasse and Pollock. A big shout out to the skipper Walter Rankin skipper of the Karen Ann, who worked hard keeping the guys in tackle and steering the boat all afternoon.

Good tench for father and son in Cavan

Ger Power was back in County Cavan at the weekend. He was out again with his nephews but this time they were after coarse fish. The weather was good and dry, water levels had dropped and fish were feeding well. But what turned it from a good day into a great day was the arrival of a shoal of good sized tench. Jamie did really well catching fish of really good quality, and even his father Tom managed to get in on the action catching his first ever tench at the ripe of age of 41.

First ever pike will be hard to beat for American angler on Derg

First Irish pike for Chris 114 cm
First Irish pike for Chris 114 cm

Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise showed an American angler what pike fishing in Ireland is all about…

Chris from America was out with me for some fishing on Lough Derg at the weekend. He had never caught a pike before. So the goal was too catch his first Irish pike. We decided too hit the famous Lough Derg. Fishing started off hard. We casted a few of the bays but the pike were not having it so we took our lunch while trolling the deeper water. We were not trolling 10 minutes when the rod tip swung round and we were in.

Chris took the rod and was immediately bent into his first Irish pike which ended up being a 27lb, 114 cm beautiful Irish pike. Talk about setting the goals high, his first fish and a PB he might never beat anywhere else in the world. We had plenty more fish over the meter mark and some good perch. That was the biggest pike of the session, but he has an eye on going one better and is already planning to come over again in September for round 2.
