Getting a bit done despite the weather

trout

Wind or rain Dan O’Neill reports from the King’s River…

Don’t mention the weather! When writing this I had firmly set that in my mind. However, I couldn’t help mentioning it as it’s all I can hear hitting the window as I write. I remember when I was Anthony’s age the trees would be bent and rain hammering down and I would try to convince my dad it was clearing, or we could find a sheltered area. I am reminded of Dougal on father ted when he looks out the window and says that very familiar phrase “Looks like rain Ted”.

This week I was lucky enough to have a couple of casts for trout on the King’s River, most of my fishing was done on the lakes or canals though, not that I am complaining. I did have a man from the Bahamas ironically given the conditions we are currently having. His stories of bonefish and permit were exactly what I needed as I wiped rain droplets from my glasses and face. Scott wanted to brush up on his casting before an upcoming trip for Tarpon so off we went to the lake for some practice and storytelling.

Getting in some practise
Getting in some practise

My time on the Kings this week was short but I did manage some trout on streamers. I have been tying some of my own creations the past week so was happy that I got a couple of trout on them. It’s always nice to tie your own and pick up some trout. The Woolly Bugger was my starting pattern and then a few Zonker patterns after that. I have been watching a lot of Kelly Gallup tying streamers on YouTube but decided to stick to two patterns for now try to improve and then move on to something a little more “complicated”.

Trial and error is a big part of fishing and I think an interesting part. I remember when I was young we had the famous PVC green fishing box. If what you wanted wasn’t in that then you improvised or made do. There were of coarse tackle shops where less tackle than nowadays was available, but pocket money didn’t stretch that far at the best of times. During  the days where you got presents at birthdays and Christmas and didn’t mind waiting on either day to come to get your new rod, reel or equipment, of course one or the other. I remember looking for specific shaped stones to use as weights then making something up in the shed to get it ready for the job. I find it great that fishing has its own space in your mind and all the memories on your journey are as clear as the day you made them. I am very mindful of this with Anthony and every now and again hide the leads or floats to see how he gets on, I have seen him use bits of sticks for margin fishing for small roach and Rudd, stripping back a rook tail feather making a small hole in the bottom and making a very good float, using a pellet bander to band small stones for leads. If it works, it works.

Casting clinic this weekend

I have a full range of fly-fishing courses available and casting clinics. There are 2 places free this Saturday on my casting clinic. On the course we will cover different aspects of casting like line maintenance, leader construction, rod and reel care as well as casting of course. If you contact me on the below details I will send on the course information.

Irish Spring Angling Fair

It’s getting very close to the Ardaire Springs Irish Spring Angling Fair (4 and 5 May), and the line-up is superb. Each and every person I have seen on the line up has a wealth of knowledge and is not afraid to share hints and tips. Also, this year there is once again the kiddies casting and fly tying, a super event and proved very successful last year. I look forward to seeing you all there and stop by to say hello.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 05 April 2024

W

ater levels in most parts of the country are still on the high side but the milder weather of late, particularly over the Easter period, should hopefully help to improve angling gradually.

Since the beginning of the season salmon anglers have been struggling with high water levels and unfortunately the last week has not been much different. Anglers on Ireland’s most productive salmon river, the River Moy, are still waiting for the first fish of the season to be caught, while the situation on most West Cork rivers hasn’t been any better with just a few sea trout reported so far.  Fishing in Delphi has also been disappointing for most of March, picking up just slightly towards the end of the month. High water has impacted fishing across most of Kerry too and, as a consequence, just a few salmon were reported from the Rivers Laune and Flesk. Nevertheless, there was finally a bit of news from the Munster Blackwater on Monday, when the first salmon of the season was landed at the Blackwater Valley Fishery.

In Waterville, Lough Currane anglers were struggling again as no salmon were reported for the past week. On a more positive note, Carrowmore Lake is off the mark since Easter Monday when the first salmon of 2024 was caught on this prolific North Mayo lough fishery.

Concluding our salmon segment for this week, we would like to draw your attention to the latest episode of the Ireland on the Fly podcast. This week Daire & Tom speak to Nicholas Grubb who grew up in south Tipperary beside the Rivers Suir and Tar and he tells them about the incredible catches of salmon that were to be had growing up.

Over to trout angling, where we received our first report of the year from Mayo’s twin lakes Conn and Cullin telling us that duckfly hatches have been sparse so far this season. From Lough Owel, however, Peter Driver reports good duckfly fishing and some early olive hatches in the current issue of his Piscari Fly Newsletter, which also features a number of other interesting topics.

In river trout fishing, Eamonn Conway of Táin Flyfishing reveals the content of his chest pack and the most important kit to bring when river fishing in his latest YouTube clip, while Dan O’Neill, fishery manager at Mount Juliet, sent in a report explaining his preferred setup for streamer fishing for brown trout, which provided him and his clients with some fine trout when fishing a high Kings River in Co. Kilkenny.

Dan was in touch with another great report on his and young Anthony’s latest fishing adventures. Check out how the father and son team got on float fishing for roach and fly fishing for pike on the River Barrow.

The fly has also been productive for pike anglers on Lough Derg as Paul Bourke of Irish Fishing Tours reports. Other methods were successful as well, producing several pike over the magic one meter mark including some fine fish between 104cm and 102cm plus a couple at 92cm and 91cm, and a few 80s. Paul also reported some chunky perch up to 37cm, which makes this predator fishing experience our Catch of the Week.

Two Belgian pike anglers who were repeat guests of Melview Fishing Lodge in Co. Longford were equally successful, catching a total of 57 pike to 97cm during their fishing week in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands area.

Elsewhere, Whitewood Pike Angling Club had their first outing of 2024 last weekend, as 21 members dusted off their rods to head to Cavan for the day. They didn’t catch any trophy pike but managed to land a respectable 143 pike on the day, with a couple of doubles, including a 14lb 2oz Esox.

Finally, over to sea angling where it was tough fishing at Black Head for Galway Bay SAC during the second leg of their winter league due to gusty westerly winds and heavy rain. Down south, at Ferrypoint in Youghal the situation wasn’t much different for West Cork and District SAC, as anglers struggled at the second leg of their midweek league Wednesday last.

Staying in the south, Keith Barker enjoyed some good sea bass action lately along the Waterford coast. Improving water clarity combined with calmer sea conditions resulted in 7 decent bass over one evening and a night session.

Reports from charter skippers weren’t plentiful so far this year, so it was great to see skipper Sean Maguire back in action this week with a trip offshore and some good mixed fishing from West Clare.

On Thursday 4th, a draw took place to allocate the second distribution of 55 Brown Tags for the taking of salmon on the Lower Lee, Co. Cork. The Brown Tags will be issued by post and anglers are asked to acknowledge receipt of their Brown Tag by email including the tag number to  [email protected]

And now the weather…

Tonight will remaining unsettled with spells of rain and strong winds at times. The weekend will stay very windy with strong, gusty southerly winds reaching storm force at times and widespread showers, some heavy. Winds will ease somewhat on Sunday afternoon, but will continue fresh to strong and gusty. Highest temperatures of 12°C to 15°C. Current indications suggest that the weather will continue unsettled for the rest of next week with spells of rain or showers spreading eastwards across the country.

Make sure to check the forecast before going afloat and if you’re going to sea, don’t forget to check the tides.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Fishing picked up at Delphi in last week of March

David McEvoy reports from Delphi on fishing during March, which proved about as frustrating as everywhere else…

March was disappointing given the conditions excellent water throughout. 5 fish were landed for the month. Seamus O’Neill having the first of approximately 9lbs from the Rock Pool on a Black Shrimp on the 14th.

There were 4 then in the last week with Bernhardt, Werner and Benni all having fish off Finlough and Hasse having a lovely fish of approximately 12lbs off Deadman’s on a Norwegian favorite the Breakfast Fly. That brought our total for March to 5. Water levels had dropped at beginning of April but Mark Corps managed to land a fish of approximately 17lbs off Finlough on a Cascade. Water levels are up as of this morning and we’re bracing ourselves for Storm Kathleen.

Belgian anglers enjoy their stay at Melview Fishing Lodge

Nice pike for Alain

Kevin Lyons of Melview Fishing Lodge reports…

Regular anglers Jean–Pierre and Alain from Belgium were over once again for their first visit of 2024. These guys know the waters well as they come and stay at Melview Fishing Lodge two or three times a year and have been returning here since 2008. So it was nothing new for them to arrive and see the water levels very high and some areas in flood. However, this did not put them off as during their stay they managed 57 Pike to 97cm.

Pike on dead bait for J.P.

We were targeting the bigger ones at this time of the year but it was not to be on this trip. Both lures and dead baits proved productive for them and they will return in July and October to have another go for the pike and even a spot of coarse fishing.

Host Kevin with his first of the day

Well done guys and look forward to seeing you again soon!

River Moy: no salmon to date and water levels still on the high side

Moy Ballina

Osgur Grieve reports from the River Moy…

Water levels on the Moy have been relatively high since the beginning of the season and angling pressure has reportedly been light. As of yet we are waiting for the 1st spring salmon to be caught on the Moy.

The Ridgepool webcam is back up and running again and can be viewed online at https://fishinginireland.info/salmon/northwest/river_moy_system/moy_ridgepoolcam/

River essentials with Táin Flyfishing

After receiving a few queries from anglers on what he considers to be the most important kit to bring to the river, Eamonn Conway of Táin Flyfishing reveals all in this clip, emptying his chest pack to give away all his secrets. It is always interesting to see what gear the pros prefer to use and Eamonn gives some great tips – with one or two surprise inclusions that you might not normally expect to find in amongst the fishing tackle.

Eamonn fishes the beautiful Fane in the north east, where he has spent some glorious spring mornings recently catching wild Irish trout in wonderful surroundings. If you like the Táin Flyfishing range of kit and the content available on his YouTube channel, don’t forget to like and subscribe.

Tough fishing at Black Head for Galway Bay SAC

The rock platforms of Black Head offer access to deeper water
Galway Bay SAC held the second leg of their winter league last week, with a report below:
For the second leg of our Winter League we travelled down to Black Head in search of shelter from the Westerly wind and rain that was battering Galway Bay. We had 6 anglers competing with us, all with hopes of catching the end of the white fish schools that occupy the bay during the colder months.
The rock platforms of Black Head offer access to deeper water
The competition commenced at 6pm, just before the tide began to drop. Fishing was slow from the start with no fish landed during the daylight hours. The crabs were causing issues to anglers on pegs 1-3 retreiving their baits stripped after less than 10 minutes of soaking. Once nightfall came the fish began to feed more.
Ailbhe Hartnett with a whiting
Conor got off the mark with a Flounder, followed by a Whiting soon after. Chris who was sharing a peg with his daughter Ailbhe pulled in a flounder to save the blank and place him second in the senior division.
Chris Hartnett with a flounder
Conor finished the session off with a fine Dab of 31cm.
31cm dab for Conor Murray
There wasn’t much activity reported by the other anglers along the rocks for the rest of the evening
Overall the fishing was poor, however it was good to be able to get out considering the recent weather on the west coast. The club plans to return to this mark during the summer months.
Results –
Senior
Conor Murray – 3 fish – 91pts
Chris Hartnett – 1 fish – 27pts
Conor Murray (Right), Senior Winner
Our next Competition is Leg 1 of our Master Angler league. This will be held at Lettergesh on the 20/21 April. More details will be confirmed closer to the weekend

Good charter fishing in west Clare

Skipper Sean Maguire was back in action this week with a trip offshore. He says “A great feeling to be back on the Atlantic again after the winter. A bit of a search for fish but we scored after a while. No sign of any mackerel though”.

Great to see so many good fish this early in the season. Hopefully we see a nice spell of settled weather and more charter boat reports in soon.

A few decent bass caught on the Waterford coast over the Easter period

Keith Barker enjoyed some good sea bass fishing lately. Read his report below…

Improving water clarity combined with calmer sea conditions produced 7 fish over one evening and a dead of night session.

Clean water resulted in upper 50cm fish falling to dark and light coloured soft plastic lures spun over shallow rocky ground.

Hopefully this will be the start of a productive summer for bass anglers on the coast. Sea conditions have been brutal over the winter months rendering lure fishing almost impossible.

Whitewood Pike Anglers have first outing of 2024

Whitewood Pike Angling Club had their first outing of 2024 at the weekend, as 21 members dusted off their rods to head to Cavan for the day. They nominated three small lakes as the competition venues and anglers could pick and choose where they wanted to fish over the course of the day.

There were no real monsters, but there were decent numbers, as they managed to land a respectable 143 pike on the day, with a couple of doubles, including a 14lb 2oz fish for Mark Kiernan which turned out to be the best fish of the day.

Full results are as follows:

1st John Sheenan 15 fish 47-8.
2nd Shipwreck (Kevin McPartland) 15 fish 45-5.
3rd Mark Kiernan 10 fish 38-11
