Irish Angling Update 1 December 2023

It’s a cold one this week, with the first day of meteorological winter dawning with a hard frost today, and more to come over the weekend. An Arctic airflow is dominating our weather at the moment, but at least with the cold comes nice bright, dry weather. Remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing, so put on the layers, wrap up well and get out there!

Pike

Winter piking is in full swing at the moment, and the Whitewood Pike Angling club members certainly enjoyed themselves on their league outing last weekend, with 111 pike landed! A wet start did not dampen spirits for the Bective Anglers annual pike competition, where young Cuinn Muldowney left the senior anglers for dust with 3 nice pike. A huge turnout of 124 rods turned out for the Newbridge Pike Anglers open competition at Poulaphouca, where Keiron Cummins was the winner with a fish of 17.08lbs.

Wendell Cruz Junior took a trip to the midlands for his first time ever pike fishing, guided by Chris Scally of Fish Tales Guiding, and was rewarded with 9 pike, including our Catch of the Week, a 17.4lbs fish, a great catch for a first timer!

Coarse

It’s a slow week for coarse angling reports, but Attila Paldick defied the cold water temperatures at Oaklands to take the third round of their winter league with a fine catch of 65.100kg.

oaklands winter league

O’Briensbridge proved a tough venue for Munster Coarse Anglers at the weekend, with some anglers doing reasonable well, but high pegs not seeing many fish at all. Elsewhere, Monasterevin & Fisherstown Anglers are holding a Fur & Feather competition on December 10th which sounds like good fun. Details on their Facebook page here.

Sea

Sea temperatures are also cooling down, but many species are still active and feeding. The cold weather can offer calmer conditions and opportunities to get out boat fishing, and skipper John Fleming and his crew found some reasonable pollack fishing in Galway Bay this week. Big tides at the weekend saw plenty of bass feeding hard after recent storms, and Keith Barker reported some god fish to lures, including a nice 68cm fish. Cormac Walsh of The Lure Fishing Podcast stepped away from the mic this week to make the most of the big tides, and was rewarded with some good bass in excellent condition.

Cormac and one of his November fish

The Killybegs Mariners club had no compeition this week, but that didn’t stop some of the members getting out on the beach and landing plenty of coalfish, flounder, turbot and bass. 38 anglers fished the penultimate leg of the Leinster Shore League last weekend at Kilgorman, but fishing was slow until darkness fell, with Gary Foster taking the win with 19 fish. Troy Francis made an early blitz attack at Garrylucas, catching enough fish in the first 2 hours to easily win the West Cork & District SAC competition.

Salmon

A late end-of-season report from Connemara, where Brian Curran reports that salmon numbers were down, but sea trout showed a large, and welcome increase, with some lovely fish to 4lbs reported.

Podcasts, Videos, Blogs

The Ireland on the Fly podcast with Daire and Tom this week were joined by Tony McCann from Belfast who, although only taking up salmon fly tying four years ago is already an accomplished salmon fly tier appearing at fairs in Ireland and the UK.

James Raymond from Irish Angling Adventures is back with a new series of videos on fishing for cod in the Shannon Estuary, and while in the first session cod proved elusive, he managed a couple of really chunky Shannon thornback ray which we would be very happy to land ourselves!

Frosty nights and plummeting water temperatures may make for tough fishing, but they hasten the onset of salmon spawning. Many of our rivers and streams will witness this great spectacle over the coming weeks. Most trout spawning is finished now, with some sea trout still digging redds. To mark it, we shared a video this week of the trout spawning migration in the Corrib catchment. The video is narrated by Martin Butler, the long-serving district inspector for the Corrib catchment, who officially retires today, and we wish him the very best in his retirement.

While the salmon season is closed to let the fish do their thing in private, don’t forget that 2024 salmon licences wlll be on sale shortly, and make a great Christmas present for the angler in your life. Give them something to look forward to!

And now the weather

A very cold weekend in store, with daytime temperatures of 1-5 degrees, and hard frosts at night, with temps of 0 to -4C. Scattered showers, heaviest in the west and north, with some falling as hail, sleet or even snow on higher ground.

Current indications suggest that wet and windy weather will spread over the south and east of the country early on Monday, with the possibility of scattered falls of sleet. Coldest in the north with milder weather possible in the south.

FURTHER OUTLOOK: Considerable uncertainty in the further outlook, with a signal for a return to a more Atlantic regime.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland. If fishing in the sea, don’t forget to check the tides.

Early flurry sees Francis dominate West Cork competition

West Cork & District SAC held their latest club competition last weekend, with yet another great report shared with us…

Garrylucas was the venue for our latest club fixture. The fishing on the night was very slow for most of us with the weed not helping the situation, however Troy Francis put on an exhibition on the night beating everyone well with 9 fish including a 57cm bass and a 40cm flounder to win the pools and the competition.
Most of Troy’s fish came in the first 2 hours of the match and he spent the next 2 hours watching the RTE player on his phone catching up on Fair City and I’m a celebrity while the rest of us struggled to catch up!
Well done Troy.
1st Troy Francis – 9 fish – 326 pts
2nd Kevin Roche – 3 fish – 112pts
3rd Stephen O Donovan – 3 fish – 106pts

First time angler hits the jackpot with Fish Tales

Chris Scally of Fish Tales Guideing reports on a recent trip out with a novice angler:

It was a fresh start to Sunday, to say the least, but that didn’t stop Wendell Cruz Junior from making the trip down for his first-ever taste of pike fishing. Wendell has been living in Ireland for 20 years but has never given Irish pike fishing a go.
The temperatures had dropped significantly in recent days, so we opted to leave the lure rods in the van, and all the deadbait rods were loaded.
Roach under a float was on the menu today, and the pike loved it…
We managed to land nine pike altogether, with the biggest being 97cm and 17lb4, which is an impressive fish for a first-time angler. Wendell also managed to boat a few perch, making it a memorable day on the lake for him.

Piscari-Fly Newsletter November 28

Peter Driver is back with his weekly update from Piscari-Fly…

How’s the Fishing?

Had a great evening with Trim Athboy and District Angling Assocation on Friday. We looked at Trout behaviour in rivers, approaching the river and different methods of fly-fishing – nymphing, dry dropper and wet fly. Great evening had by all. If there are any other clubs out there who would like an evening like this, get in touch.

Piscari Travels

This year sees Piscari-fly’s Mark with his team The Irish Slayers, Darius and Rodger head to the Welsh Dee for the Hanak European Grayling Festival. River conditions are looking good with the river dropping nicely. Wishing all Irish competitors and all competitors the best of luck. It should be a great competition. Stay tuned and log into the Piscari-fly Club for updates from Mark during the competition.

Some pictures from last year.

What’s Coming?

Piscari Venator Nymphing Rod

We are delighted and very excited to announce we are adding a nymphing rod to the Piscari brand. We have been working on this for some time and the first samples arrived in the other day. Still have a few tweaks to work out but really looking forward to having this on the market next season.

Why Venator? Because it is a fish hunter rod. Venator is the Latin for hunter.

Pollack fishing continues in Galway Bay

Pollack

Charter boat fishing continues around the coastline when weather windows permit, and John Fleming, skipper of the Brazen Hussy in Galway Bay, has been out this week. Taking advantage of some calmer weather to fish some reef marks.

Pollack

A lot of fish were showing on the sounder but fishing started off slow. It came good for a while, with a nice run of fish coming aboard, but mostly, it was nice just to be back out again!

Pollack

John still has weekend and midweek dates available up to Christmas, so if you fancy a late season trip, get in touch below.

VIDEO: Cod Fishing in the Shannon Estuary

James Raymond is no stranger to these reports, and he is back with another great video for his Irish Angling Adventures channel. This winter, James is planning to target cod in the Shannon Estuary. He says “The Shannon Estuary is well known for its fine stocks of Thornback ray and conger but not many people tend to fish it during the winter for some cod.”

This video is the first in a series James plans to make over the winter, and we will be following closely to see how he gets on. Sharing tips on choosing a venue, tide state, bait preparation and where to cast, sea anglers are sure to learn plenty.

Preparing large baits

On his first session, James does find some cracking thornback ray, even a possible PB!

A fine Shannon thornie

Will he find the cod?  Check out the video below, and see how James got on.

111 Pike for Whitewood Pike Angling Club at recent league outing

Members of Whitewood Pike Angling Club headed up to a lake venue in Co. Monaghan for the fourth round of their club league last weekend. And it proved to be a very busy day, as they found the pike to be feeding strongly, leading to some great bags.

A total of 111 pike were landed including three doubles, best being 14lb. There were 7 bags of 30lb or more and plenty of 20lb bags which is pretty good going by any standards.

Results as follows:

1st Jody Kiernan 21 fish 81-9
2nd Joe Mc Parland 17fish 51-6
3rd Tucker McCabe 11 fish for 38-13

Huge turnout for Newbridge Pike Anglers open competition

A huge turnout of 104 adult and 20 junior anglers headed to Co. Wicklow for last Sunday’s open competition hosted by Newbridge & District Pike Anglers. The venue was Poulaphouca Lake (aka Blessington), a fishery that can be hard work but is capable of throwing up a good stamp of fish from time to time.

After check-in, anglers dispersed around the lake, ready for the ‘rods in’ at 9am, and the early reports were of fish being caught steadily. Midday saw a slump in takes, before the last couple of hours saw the fish come on the feed again.

At the 4pm cut-off, a total of 24 fish had been registered, not too bad for what can be a slow enough venue. The fish of the day went to Keiron Cummins with a good double of 17.08.

The competitors headed to a local pub, where the prizegiving took place, including plenty of prizes for the junior anglers. So, all in all it was a great achievement to get so many anglers out fishing at this time of year so credit to the organisers, sponsors and of course competitors who made the day a great success.

Results are below, and for a full report, see Newbridge & District Pike Anglers Facebook Page.

Winner of our open pike competition 2023 is
1st Keiron Cummins 17.08 1fish
2nd Sean Walsh 10.07 1 fish
Joint 3rd Robert Gilmore 9.15 1 fish
Joint rd Arthur Potgo 9.15 1fish
4th John O’Conner 9.03 1fish

1st Liam Cullen 2.14
2nd Kasper Potgo raffle
3rd Brendan Jervis jnr raffle

Leinster Shore League goes down to the wire

South Shore SAC posted a rundown of the recent Leinster Shore League match:

38 anglers from Leinster-based sea angling clubs turned out for the penultimate Leinster League match of the year at Kilgorman last Sunday. Expectations were high as most east coast venues had been fishing very well in the days running up to the match, with numerous species showing up along the coast.

But, as you might expect, when the points were on the table, the fish decided to have an off day, leaving anglers to scratch around for small flats and the odd whiting in the early stages of the match. With the fishing slow, all hopes rested on the evening, as the advent of darkness often brings fish closer to shore where they can be picked off more easily.

While the dusk did see an improvement in catches, it wasn’t the blitz that anglers were hoping for, but that meant it was in the balance till rods in, as a decent fish could easily turn the tables for any angler in contention. In Zone A, a hotly fought battle saw Karl Fogarty edge out brother Ciaran to the top spot. Zone B was won by Gary Foster, and his bag of 19 fish was the best on the day winning him first prize overall.

With one round left to go, three anglers are in with a chance of winning the league, so it’s all down to the final event of the season on 30th Dec in Kilcoole.

For a full report see South Shore SAC Facebook Page.
