Tough going for Irish Masters at Feeder World Championships

Not the finish they were hoping for, but it was a good effort from Team Ireland at the 2nd Feeder Masters World Championships which were held at the Migliarino Channel in Ferrara, Italy last weekend.

The squad members Tony Green, Jack Tisdall, Mark Theedom and Vincent Walsh dropped down from their 7th place at the end of day one to finish in 9th position overall on day two.

Fishing was particularly tough on the second day with the venue at Migliarino producing just 627 fish for the forty competing anglers, less than half the numbers of the first day.

Sectors A and D fished the best with B sector the least productive. It was a chilly week for all and for the smallest squad – with no support on the bank – the logistics of attending meetings, collecting bait and getting to pegs was tiring for everyone.

Congratulations go to the World Champions France, with Silver for England and Bronze for Germany and to England’s Simon Fry the new world champion.

Coldwater lure tactics from L’Ile Verte Pike Lodge

Norbert Renaud of L’Ile Verte Pike Fishing Lodge regularly posts great features on his YouTube channel and this week he looks at cold-water lure fishing for pike.

Many anglers pack away the lure rods when the temperatures drop, preferring to target pike on deadbait rigs, but Norbert prefers to keep moving and actively search the water for winter fish. Norbert is a deep and analytical thinker when it comes to pike fishing and he likes to leave no stone unturned in the search for piking perfection. Fishing the right lures slow and deep is the key to his success, with an extra emphasis on lure balance and realistic movement to find the key triggers for cold water pike.

Norbert will tell you more in this week’s tackle talk – and don’t forget to like the video and subscribe to his channel.

Blonde ray from the shore. Yes, you read that right!

Kevin McGowan is a man on a mission. Or he was, until last week. A mission to catch a blonde ray from the shore. Not the most common catch, blonde ray favour deeper water than other ray species, and are occasionally caught by boat anglers, but only in certain, well-guarded secret marks. We had never heard of one caught from the shore, but that is what Kevin was determined to do. We’ll let him tell the story in his own words…

I’d been wanting to find out if you could catch these beauties around the Irish coast for a long time I even went as far as Donegal from Cork to have a go but nothing,
After a few phone calls a friend of mine told me he was diving in a spot and saw a few of these giants sitting on the bottom close to shore so it was all I thought about .
Three weeks ago I decided to try the area which I love fishing from and I decided on the Wednesday night I’d drive to this spot, fish the incoming tide at night then sleep in my car and fish the day time tide as well.
After a horrific windy wet cold night with no sleep I went after them again and it was dogfish after dogfish so I went home.
After Googling , looking up old maps, reading about this fish I received a text from a guy and he suggested to try again on a calm day light breeze just after a spring tide. So I went rig making, bait collecting, going over my reels, rods over and over.. could not sleep with excitement.
After a 4 hour drive I arrived at the spot and it looked so good I couldn’t get down to the water’s edge fast enough.  My first two casts were dogfish – “f**K sake feck off dogs” , so I decided on bigger baits – three large sandeels on a size 3/0 hook, 3 hook flapper rig .

On the way up that morning I said food wise I need to be good here so I had a flask of hot water with me for tea so I bought a pot noodle – why? A hot chicken roll would have been better.  I poured the hot water in on the noodle and next minute my rod took off like a train – burnt the fingers off myself!
Grabbed the rod struck into the fish I said no dog on this , this fish kept going so after a few minutes I played the fish onto the rock below, and when I went to retrieve the fish he disappeared into the depths gone!
In my mind at that time my fishing gear was going on donedeal!

As I was baiting that up again my other rod took off – “holy s**t” as I struck in, my palpitations were like banging, “if I lose this fish that’s it”. I took my time ,it kept taking line, kept sticking to the bottom, it was a waiting game but eventually it broke the surface and my jaw dropped.

Kevin’s first blonde ray from the shore. Probably not his last!

After I took photos and put the fish back alive we said our good byes and off it swam.
I baited up again and cast it out – now I was going to enjoy my pot noodle – looked over and there it was splattered all over the rocks lol! Next time just bring a hot chicken roll.
On the day I had 4 dogs , a coalie, missed two blondes and landed one, I’m going to be buzzing for a long time over that , next ray on my list a cuckoo ray…

Well done Kevin, sounds like a great session and we’re delighted you achieved your objective.

Mission accomplished!

Perch pack fish Barrow Bonanza 2023

The Barrow Perch Bonanza 2023 took place on Sunday, December 3rd, on a popular and well-known section of the Barrow that has traditionally produced some good-sized fish. The anglers had very high expectations, which were tempered a little bit when the temperature dropped right down in the couple of days building up to competition day.

That didn’t stop the hardy 23 anglers who had registered and trained hard in the build up to the event. As expected, the drop in temperature didn’t made fishing easy, but some of the top anglers still managed to catch some Perch – including the top fish on the day which measured in at 41cm, a superb river fish.

After all pictures and videos were checked, the organisers held their prize giving directly on the river bank.

First place was Adam Bartosik who landed five good fish over the 25cm threshold – the best of which was 32cm. In second was Eduard Dondea who also landed five fish up to 31cm. In third was David Dennis, who landed two fish but also managed to get the best fish of the event at 41cm.

The next date in the calendar for the perch hunters is the first leg of Perch Master Ireland – so keep an eye out for that!

Troy Francis takes biggest, flattest and best at Garrylucas

Garrylucas beach

Pete Davis of West Cork and District SAC writes on their recent club match at Garrylucas:

Garrylucas was the venue for our latest club fixture. The fishing on the night was very slow for most of us with the weed not helping the situation, however Troy Francis put on an exhibition on the night beating everyone well with 9 fish including a 57cm bass and a 40cm flounder to win the pools and the competition.

Most of Troy’s fish came in the first 2 hours of the match and he spent the next 2 hours watching the RTE player on his phone catching up on Fair City and I’m A Celebrity while the rest of us struggled to catch up.

Well done Troy.

  • 1st Troy Francis – 9 fish – 326 pts
  • 2nd Kevin Roche – 3 fish – 112pts
  • 3rd Stephen O Donovan – 3 fish – 106pts

Late season pollack and wrasse for west cork kayak angler

pollack
Late season pollack from the kayak

David Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork enjoyed a late season session from the kayak at the weekend…

Managed to get out for what surely must be one of the last few kayak fishing trips of 2023. The breeze was light and slightly offshore making for short drifts tight to structure so not really suitable for fly but a dozen or so good sized pollack and a few wrasse were more than happy to hammer my soft plastic paddle tails mainly fished tight to the bottom and sometimes up in the water column. I was seeing massive shoals of sprat on my fish finder, which is the norm at this time of year.

Stay safe out there

With inshore sea temperatures at less than 10°C now, shorter daylight hours and very changeable weather conditions, one must be experienced, very well prepared and extra careful if going afloat on the sea to fish at this time of year…

Angling Feats in Winter’s Chill at Athy

Athy winter league

The Athy & District Anglers report on the third round of their Winter League fished on a chilly damp morning…

On a chilly Sunday morning, November 19th, 2023, the Athy & District Anglers Club crew geared up for the third round of the Winter League. We kicked off at 8:30, drawing Pegs under a light sprinkle – not the best weather, but hey, we’re anglers, a bit of rain won’t dampen our spirits.

Out of the 14 of us, 11 showed up, but we missed Ollie, Fergal, and Barry. Can’t wait to have them back on the bank soon! Winter was making its presence known, and we could feel it in the cold drizzle. Originally, we planned to fish the River Barrow, but overnight rain had the river pegs underwater. Quick change of plans, and we relocated to the Marina club grounds.

Some pegs were submerged, but we were determined. It was also the first time using Peg 1, installed back in September. A bit of a wild card, but who doesn’t love a freshly installed peg!

At 10:00 am, Des shouted the all-in, and we were off. Hugh, Clive, and Ryan on Pegs 1, 3, and 4 hit the ground running, pulling in barrow roach like it was a party. Meanwhile, Tommy and Des had a pike party, not by choice. Those sneaky predators were determined to steal the spotlight.

The weather played games with us, alternating between cold and cloudy, occasional rain, and surprise sunshine. Classic winter unpredictability.

As the clock approached the usual wrap-up time, we decided to extend the match by 30 minutes. A bit more time to show those fish who’s boss.

At 3:30 pm, the all-out call echoed, and we gathered for the weigh-ins. The Marina surprised us, delivering over 100lbs of fish.

Hugh stole the show with a whopping 27lb 10ozs, followed by Clive with 18lb 4ozs. Ryan clinched the third spot with 15lb 4ozs, and Jimmy and Chris rounded out the top five with 14lb 9ozs and 13lb 9ozs.

It was a fantastic day, proving that winter angling can be a real adventure. The Marina held its own as a top-notch venue, and we can’t wait for the next round of the Winter League. Tight lines, folks!

Fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying with Dan O’Neill

frosty morning

Dan O’Neill of South East Casting reports on some of his courses held recently

Most of last month I have been looking back on pictures of summer trips to the river with some new acquaintances and angling friends. I was a little more involved with the angling world this year and realised we have quite a community. Since passing my APGAI exam I have tried to give a little more back to the angling community by giving free tuition classes and information days. During these days I swap information with some anglers that have attended. I like to emphasise that I swapped information as the classes were not about me telling someone or ordering someone to do something a particular way. It was more of a gathering of angling friends talking about their style of fishing and my style. If the person took a little bit of information from me or some of the other attendees and felt it would improve their techniques or chances, then that was a great result for the class.

I never know what the best way to think of fishing is. We get together to “hunt” for the trout, discussing the best way to trick or capture our quarry, then once we trick them and capture them the “hunt” comes to an end. It’s at this stage we take the utmost care to release our friends back into the river to get on with their cycle and wonder how a small fly just dragged them across a river.

I recently spoke on a zoom meeting hosted by Glenda Powell and Noel Fitzmaurice which was an absolute pleasure, what a team they are. The meeting had some great people and speakers, it was truly a superb evening. I had a warm cup of tea and some Scottish shortbreads watching the lights of the Christmas tree fade and illuminate as people from all over the world told their stories of “why fishing”. Glenda kindly asked me to speak at the meeting and I shared my story. What an evening and just goes to show how international our angling community is. It’s a universal language in its own way.

fly tying
Tying a Sponge Bob

My youngest apprentice Daniel was at the vice this weekend, he was tying a yellow fly called “SpongeBob”. Anthony enjoys tying also and has started on pheasant tails for next season. Planning a trip to the barrow in the coming weeks as water levels drop a little.

I will be running classes in January, February and March. These classes will cover getting ready for the new season. Tactics for early season trout, tackling the higher colder water and leader set ups. We will also speak about rods, reels and fly lines that will suit your 2024 season. I for one am always overspending when it comes to tackling up for a new season so let’s get together and discuss what we really need.

The free tuition days went very well over the last few weeks, and I met some fantastic people to which I am very grateful to. These classes also make me stronger as an instructor, so thanks to all who attended.

If interested in 2024 classes or guiding contacted me by phone, email or messenger.
