Six Gill Shark Time on the Clare Dragoon

Skipper Luke Aston is known for getting big fish for his clients, with six gill shark a speciality of his. These monsters can go well over a thousand pounds and are a huge test of both an angler’s skill, strength and endurance.

Regular client Andy was on a two-day mission to land his 5th sixgill, with plenty of days over the last 4 years dedicated to the hunt. A long day proved fruitless, with just a few small fish to keep them occupied.

A nice mix of species, but not what Andy was after1

Just as they were about to reel in and head for home, however, Andy’s rod bent, the telltale sign of a sixgill, and the battle was on.

It’s a testament to Andy’s and Luke’s skill that only 35 minutes later a fish estimated at 900lbs was on the surface.

Brought alongside for release in the water

Well done Andy and Luke on a great capture!

Earlier in the week another group had tried drifting for shark, but while the sizxgills proved elusive, they were happy enough with their catch on the day.

Ireland on the Fly talks Lough Arrow with Jackie Mahon

Lough Arrow

This week on the Ireland on the Fly podcast, Daire & Tom are discussing Lough Arrow, which if the mayfly season is anything to go by, is on the up in terms of numbers and size of trout being caught there.

The secret’s out – the rise of Lough Arrow

So, what’s behind the great catches so far this year, what can anglers expect for the rest of the season and is Arrow going to rival Sheelin in the long term as a fly fishing loughs destination?

Jackie Mahon on Lough ArrowJackie Mahon, the fly tier and guide on the lough explains why he saw the good, the bad and the ugly on Arrow so far this year.

Spurred on aboard the Lady Gwen in Clare

Skipper Sean Maguire reports that it was another lovely week to be on the water. The only complaint (!!!) was that using bait brought on “a little too many spur dogs”. I don’t know, sounds like good fun to us! Anglers certainly enjoyed catching and releasing plenty of spurs anyway, as well as landing some nice pollack, coalfish and ling when they could get through the spurs.

Galway Fishery closed, but some nice fish were landed over the past few weeks

Many anglers will be aware that the Galway Fishery is currently closed due to high water temperatures. We are hoping that cooler weather and fresher water will soon change that, but in the meantime here is an update from Daithi Ryan on how the fishing has been for the last few weeks before the closure.

Overall, May was a poor month for rod catches with only 23 salmon landed for the month. We began the month with 4 gates open, which limited the amount of fly anglers, but Brian O’Donoghue got us off the mark for the month with a lovely fish of 8.5lbs on the fly. On the 17th of May it went from 4 gates to 2 gates, this improved catches on both fly and shrimp. On the 22nd Billy Moylan caught our biggest salmon of the season coming in at 13.3lbs on the fly. On the 26th Niall Lynch caught a beautiful 11lb spring fish and Steve Jones caught another stunning 11.5lb spring fish.

Niall Lynch with a nice spring fish

There were 7 fish caught on the fly, 15 were caught on the prawn and 1 was caught on the spinner for the month, The most successful fly for the month was a Silver Stoat.

Steve Jones with a fine 11.5lbs springer

June continued in the same vein, with the grilse late to arrive and anglers struggling. The fly has been the most successful method, with a size 12 Munro taking more fish than any other. We have had 24 fish so far for the month, with Michael Righton’s 7.5lbs fish the pick so far before the closure on the 10th. Lewis Mathews landed 2 fish on fly, Simon Lenihan had 2 including one on fly, and Enda Scahill also had 2 fish on shrimp.

Fingers crossed the river will cool enough for the fishery to reopen soon and we will have more June fishing to report!

Fly anglers have some nice trout fishing recently on the River Boyne

River Boyne Trout, Ireland.

The water level in the River Boyne is currently low and clear. Air temperatures are high being in the upper teens to early twenties.

However, despite the difficult conditions some nice trout fishing with the fly has been reported recently from the River Boyne.

Needless to say, most of the fishing has been in the cool of the evening. Rises have differed on different locations along the river. They have varied from old style glorious evening rises downstream of Navan to short sporadic rises further upstream, above Navan.

River Boyne Trout, Ireland.

Downstream of Navan one angler had 5 nice wild brown trout for his session. The best of his trout weighed circa 1.75lb and 3 were around 1.25lb. The last of his catch was just under the pound.

Upstream of Navan, two anglers had 19 trout for their evening session. The best of trout weighed about 12ozs all the rest were between 8 and 12 inches in length.

Another trout angler had some nice trout fishing on the Ramparts with a number of trout in and around the pound mark. Sedges and blue winged olives produced the best results. The spent gnat also produced a few nice fish for anglers.

All fish were returned unharmed back to the river.

Catch and release is an important part of fishing sustainably

First 2023 Feedermasters qualifier held at Muckno

Lough Muckno

The Lough Muckno Festivals Group held the first of their 2023 Feedermasters qualifiers at the weekend on Lough Muckno. The event saw slightly fewer anglers than expected, due in part to an expectation of fewer fish to be had in mid June.

Confident that the venue would produce, organisers made sure that the event went ahead and bumper weights were recorded throughout most of the 2 twelve man sections.
The overall winner, with a magnificent 33.360 kgs, was Neil Keane off 161, followed by Piotr Horbinski off 228 Yellow Island on just short of 13kgs.
Some significant weights were recorded on each section with a number of weights of 10 kg or thereabouts brought to the scales.
Qualifiers were
  • A. Neil Keane
  • B Piotr Horbinski

Tench and hybrids from canal at Athy but roach wins the day

athy

Ryan from Athy & District Anglers reports on the first match of their 2023 summer league…

10 June: A far better showing from the Canal this match again! Match ran quite late, from 5:15pm to 9:15pm, however most of the catching across the stretch took place in the first ~2 hours. Goes to show how important it is to capitalize on an active swim early!

13 anglers in total are fishing this league, with full attendance for this evening’s match. Draws took place at 4pm and everyone made their way to the bank. A special callout to those anglers that jumped the gun and mounted the bank too early, causing traffic jams. We know who you are ;).

Most of the weight today came from Tench & Hybrids, delighted to see them showing strongly from the canal! The winner however took the victory mostly on roach! Some beautiful fish and great fishing to get so many of them in. Well done to all!

Congratulations to our Winner & Framers:

  1. Colin Oliver – 9lb 6ozs
  2. Tommy – 9lb
  3. Chris – 6lb 9ozs
