Good bass on fly and lure for visiting anglers in Kerry

smart

John Quinlan reports on the bass fishing around Ballinaskelligs Bay…

Rob Ro with his 69cm bass
smart

24 April: First guiding day of the season and a cracking bass for Rob Ro. 69cms and in great condition for the time of year

Neville Board and his fly caught bass
smart

28 April: Great day out with Neville Broad and first day guiding for bass on the fly this season. 5 landed in total. Excellent fishing from Neville. Only disappointment was a very large foul hooked mullet that we were both sure was the bass of a lifetime. Hell of a fight though.

Ireland on the Fly talks NZ with Ronan Crean and Mayfly with Tom doc

Ronan Creane

For Daire & Tom’s latest bucket list episode, they catch up with Galway man, Ronan Creane, whose love of fly fishing and big brown trout led him to New Zealand where he hasn’t left and is now firmly established as a full time guide during the season.

The Bucket List #2: New Zealand on the Fly

So just what is the life of a guide really like on some of the finest brown trout waters in the world and does he miss the Irish fishing at all?

Ronan discusses the sight fishing on the rivers, the need for speed in one’s casting and why the lakes are an untapped resource that deserve more time from any visiting angler.

The mayfly is up!

Also on the episode, Tom talks about the expectations of the coming week for the mayfly on Lough Corrib, why the jungle drums are starting to beat and we will be hearing those immortal four words, ‘the mayfly is up’ very shortly.

Great moment for Jens on Carrowmore Lake!

Jens enjoys casting a team of flies on Carrowmore

During the past two weeks Carrowmore Lake continued to produce decent numbers of spring salmon. Most of the good fishing was confined to late afternoon or evening hours. However, the fishing was patchy at times and generally angles had to put in the hours to be successful.

For Jens Buttler, however, the stars aligned when fishing together with local angler John Cosgrove  during the week. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Jens decided to team up with John who had caught a couple nice fish the days before and knows the lake like the back of his hand. After rising a fish each, the rod bent again and just a few moments later Jens played his first Irish salmon. Needless to say that the fine 8lbs springer took one of John’s own tyings…a “Cosgrove Special”.

It was a great moment for Jens when the fish was finally in the net as he had come all the way from Germany to try his luck lough style fishing for salmon. It was Jens’ first visit to Ireland but definitely not the last…

Please note that Carrowmore Lake is a brown tag fishery. For bookings contact Bangor Erris Angling Club www.bangorerrisangling.com

Tough league outing for Killybegs Mariners

Killybegs Mariners report from their last league outing…

Twelve anglers made the journey to Rosbeg on a cracking evening. Unfortunately, the fishing wasn’t as good as the weather!

Early on there were a few turbot showing with the biggest a 23cm for Pat Byrne. As the hours went by there were a lot of anglers looking for their first fish. A few trout livened up the proceedings as darkness fell with the best at 52cm for Cormac Duddy. As the trout moved off, one angler was pulling well clear of the rest with 4 different species on the scorecard.

Flounder
Weever

In first place on the night was John Cunningham with 197 points with turbot, flounder, trout and a weaver. Second place went to Cormac Duddy on 77 points with a trout. Longest flat was taken by a relieved Brian Smith who left it very late to land a 28cm flounder. The lucky peg also went to Brian Smith. Well done to the prize winners and thanks to all who came out for the evening!

Great fishing in great weather for the “Fiona Tee” in Donegal Bay

Last week, anglers aboard the “Fiona Tee” enjoyed some great fishing in great weather in Donegal Bay. There were lots of coalies, some really good pollack and a few ling. The skipper was also pleased that they had a nice run of big mackerel after not seeing any for about 8 weeks.

Big pollack for Killybegs Mariners Member Cormac Duddy

A couple days later, the great fishing continued for Killybegs Fishing Trips during a half-day trip with  plenty of nice big pollack going and plenty of coalies and the odd cod as well.

Ling
Mackerel were caught in good numbers

Another relatively quiet week on Lough Arrow

Quick photo of a trout caught on a dry olive before release

Lough Arrow Anglers report…

It has been another relatively quiet week on the lake.

Anglers fishing out from Dodd’s Boats reported catching a few small trout, with nothing of any size. Paul Mc Tiernan, Ballyfarnon, fishing with Ken Murray, Drogheda, both caught a number of small fish on olives and wet flies. Gerry Martin, Ballindoon, caught three fine trout on olives and buzzers during the weekend, with the best weighing over 4lb.

From this….
…to this, in minutes.

Reports are that there have been good hatches of mayfly on Lough Key over the last few days so hopefully this time next week the fly will be up on Arrow. People have different thoughts on how long the fly comes up on Arrow after Key, is it one week, two weeks???

My mates are on their way!

Mayfly Competition has been set for 14th May. Note: this competition starts at 10 o’clock – an hour earlier than our other competitions.
