New member Janis tops Mariners’ winter league session in Mullaghmore

The Ireland on the Fly podcast talks to Denis Goulding about fishing through winter for Rainbow Trout…
Although it’s winter time it doesn’t mean you have to hang up your rods in the close season with a number of stocked fisheries around the country a great place to still catch fish – even if it is sometimes in near freezing temperatures.
But with stockies, it’s not just about chuck it out and pull em in as you’ll find out on the latest Ireland on the Fly episode with Denis Goulding, a well-known Irish international angler who has fished for them for over thirty years and who also runs the winter bank league.
And as he says, just get out there, relax and go fishing on these fisheries over winter time, ‘they’re ready and waiting for you’.
Denis gives a masterclass in how to fish for rainbows and it’s well worth a listen.

The prolific C/M Lakelands Feeder Club were back on the banks on Sunday for the first round of their Lough Muckno Winter League. High water levels on Muckno had meant that various events were cancelled in recent weeks but things had settled down enough for sections on each of Black, Yellow and White Islands, as well as Concra Wood, to be used by participants.
Some thirty four club members put in an appearance on a day when the fishing was hard on all sections. Yellow Island was the place to be though, with the top five weights all coming from there.
OVERALL.
SECTIONS.
The next round of the winter league will take place in two weeks and we’ll keep an eye out for the results.

The Romanian Catch and Release Angling Association had a great first day to kick off their winter league. The recent cool snap and high water at the venue meant that expectations were low – so low in fact, that only six club members turned up! Those that did got straight into the action though, with fish coming thick and fast throughout the day.
Adi Bus leads the league after the first leg with a top weight of over 17kg in what turned out to be a really mild and pleasant day to be on the banks. Codin Jurj came second on the day with 11.740kg and Ilie Pop took third with 6.370kg.
The club members reckon that it was one of the best days of winter fishing that they have had and a lesson learned for those no-shows who didn’t fancy it! Their next match will be on December 11th and hopefully a few more anglers will fish!

Munster Coarse Anglers were back at O’Breinsbridge for the first time is a long time this weekend…
It was the first time in a long time that we payed a visit to O’Briensbridge. We fished up stream towards the dam and to be honest the look of it did not inspire. The river was up over the banks and flowing through strongly. And the pegs were over grown, not having seen a angler in a long time. So we were forced to spread along the length squeezing our selves in amongst the brambles and bushes where ever we could.
However… it fished remarkably well for some. There were 3 double figure weights coming from the up steam end. Richard’s magnificent 28lb 12oz being the best. Downstream it was a bit of a disappointment for Ray with only 1 bite and 1 fish to show for all his efforts.
Venues to be decided near the match dates.

Cork Sea Angling Club fished their President’s Cup competition at the weekend. Kevin McGowan reports…
Wow wow and wow again. We fished our final Cork Sea Angling Club competition today at Long Strand, it was for the President Cup. On the way down the weather was perfect not a breeze but as we walked across the sand dunes we could hear the madness. The waves were smashing the shore and all I could think about was how the hell am I putting up the tent in this and how many bass will we get.
I fished peg number nine, end peg, next to Eric Gosnell and I imagined being here 50 years ago for the Munster Open when he fished it with Andy Corbett for the same cup. As the whistle blew I casted a 3 hook flapper size 4 hooks loaded with week old razor fish about 40 yards and left it for about 20 minutes. There was no point looking for bites. As I reeled in I felt a knock and my brain went eeeeeeekkkk! As I reeled I felt another pull I knew I had something – 35cm flounder. Delighted!
I had a sneaky look down the beach to Mark Gargan and Noel Cashman we were fighting for 3rd place. After I caught the flounder Pawel Kurowski had a 27cm flounder. Then Eric Gosnell reel in a 33cm one. I had another at 34cm and then Brendan Mack landed his 33cm flounder.
There were 9 anglers fishing and we had 5 flounders, 3 or 4 weevers a few under size flounders. Martin Fitzgerald had a lovely 46cm sea trout which went back safe and sound. Winners were…
Next competition is Saturday 26th of November: Cork Sea Angling Club v Dublin Sea Angler’s in Waterford looking forward it!
