River levels, which had increased somewhat in previous weeks allowing salmon to migrate upstream to the Mallow/Millstreet area, are now fining out again.

Reports are that Salmon are once again being caught throughout the system. IFI staff have met significant numbers of salmon anglers being met from Millstreet, Co. Cork to Cappoquin, Co. Waterford.  Good catches have been reported from around the Lismore area, but no great evidence of fresh run Salmon or the expected Autumn run.

Good fishing on wrecks, drift and inshore with Courtmacsherry Angling

Mark Gannon from Courtmacsherry Angling has been fishing with a lot of Belgian anglers recently and they haven’t been disappointed with great fishing for Ling, Shark, common skate, pollack, conger.

The blue sharks on the wrecks were very active and several specimen sized Coalfish we’re lost due to being targeted on the way up by blue and Porbeagle sharks.

A phenomenal 70 different species for Killybegs Mariners so far this year

The club species tracker for Killibegs Martiners SAC for this year stands at 70 different species so far…what a phenomenal achievement!

Club member John Cunningham also hit a major milestone during the week, catching his 60th species for the year. John added a saury to his impressive list…this truly is some fantastic fishing with all sizes of fish from a few hundred pounds weight to a few ounces! Earlier in the week, John already added a trigger fish to his tally.

There were also 3 new club record entry lengths this week with a boat ballan for Pat C, a boat rock cook for John C and a shore saury for Cormac B.

Wicklow Boat Charters Skipper, Kit Dunne, reports on some recent results out of Wicklow…

On the way to wrecks

WRECK fishing off Wicklow proves to be very productive in Autumn, with recent trips producing Pollock, Coalie, & Pouting in numbers. On two trips this week to the 20Nm wrecks, in reasonable weather there were plenty of Pollock to 7lb, no specimens but a nice feed for all on-board.

Some anglers opted for the simple 3-up rigs while others went gilling with shad type lures, both methods proved successful.

TOPE fishing has been excellent this week, with the big females and males in tow making an appearance most days. An afternoon session proved very successful after picking up a couple of fresh mackerel, (which proved to be the most difficult part), we then set up anchor for Tope. It wasn’t long before novice angler Alex had a massive run which produced a fine Male Specimen Tope of 155.5cm, estimated around 45lb. This was later followed by a fine Specimen of 156cm taken by experienced angler Denis Power.

Unfortunately Wednesday didn’t produce inshore with SW F5 winds putting a swell in the most sheltered parts of the Bay.

BASS fishing still proves to be productive although we still have a bit of work to do, were still picking out ones and twos to 4 and 5lb but no double figure fish yet. Watch this space.

SPURDOG  should be coming to our waters now, plenty of trips planned for October thru to April for the big Specimen fish coming to our deep waters.

Buckets of blues and loads of ling for anglers on Silver Dawn

ling

Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters reports some super shark fishing aboard the Silver Dawn.

15 September: Our two anglers from Holland decided to have another session on sharks today as the tuna are late arriving on the south coast. 15 Blues including 2 over 100lb made it a good choice. Frans and Paulus have caught 31 this week over the 2 days we targeted shark. Henk here is helping his fellow countrymen land the fish and when the water is warm they don’t always want to come onboard easily despite a long fight

16 September: The last day out for our visiting Dutch anglers and we decided to try for Bluefin. We haven’t hooked up yet but we have seen several bursts of tuna on the surface so hopefully they have finally arrived off West Cork.

In the meantime Frans and Paulus are resting their arms from all of their shark exploits and the chair is waiting on deck so that they can take it easy if a Bluefin takes a lure.
Either way it’s not a bad way to spend a Friday in September.

19 September: Just back from another epic offshore spin in perfect weather. Wrecking and shark were the target with 5 top lads boating 40 ling from 5 to 22lb and 43 Blue Sharks including 2 specimens.

Best craic was our hurried attempt to get a line out for tuna when we saw them close to Silver Dawn. We hooked and played a Bluefin for 10 mins before it spat the hook…

Fine weather and good fishing in Clare

Coalfish

Skipper Luke Aston has been putting guests over some nice fish lately, with some nice blue shark coming to the boat, and bottom fishing producing some fine whiting. Plenty of spurs were also taking baits, with some up to 18lbs.

Blue shark
Another nice blue

Regular guest Andy was back for another go for sixgill shark, he has had 3 so far this season but it was not to be on this occasion. Good conger eel and coalfish probably softened the blow somewhat!
