Last weekend saw the start of the Killybegs Mariners‘ winter league. Read their report below…

A kaleidoscope of colour splashed across the Rossnowlagh sky on Friday night as 20 mariners lined the beach to enjoy an evening’s fishing and the first of 12 league outings.

A total of 4 species were caught including flounders, trout, turbot and weevers.

John Cunningham however, went from one of the smallest fish in the bay, a painted goby, to one of the largest, a bluefin tuna, aboard Donegal Bluefin Tuna and Angling Charters. This meant species number 56 and 57 for the year for him with one on a size 18 hook and one on an 11/0 hook.

Mixed species for Mississippi men in West Clare

Some American steel worked wonders for Irish fish!

Seán Maguire of fishingadventures.ie in Kilbaha, West Clare, had some American friends from Mississippi out aboard Lady Gwen II for a couple of days recently in blustery conditions. The anglers had some great sport while fishing with very light tackle.

They had lots of species including a lot of codling, pollock, ling, gurnard and haddock – all great fun for the visitors who tried a lot of different rigs from back home to great effect.

Ferox count nears the ton for Tomi on Corrib

Super ferox fishing with Tomi Kurmann

There was another great day on mighty Lough Corrib for Tomi Kurman and his guests as they managed to boat four smashing ferox trout of 63cm, 64cm, 69cm and 71cm. Tomi also managed some 100cm+ pike!

That brings the ‘count’ for Tomi and his anglers up to 96 ferox of over 65cm caught and released from his boat during the 2022 season – amazing stuff. Many of Tomi’s fish are recaptures from previous trips – a testament to the good care he takes when landing and unhooking these mighty beasts, ensuring a sustainable fishery for them.

Torrential rain dampens the Muckno mood for Feedermasters finalists

The Irish Feedermasters final was fought out by nineteen of Ireland’s finest feeder anglers on Concra Wood, Lough Muckno on Sunday 11th, in incessant torrential rain.

The highly talented field of anglers ensured that it would be a competitive event whatever the weather gods threw down and only grams separated some of the top spots despite the awful conditions and rising water levels.

The influx of cooler water slowed things down a bit for the participants, making the lough much tougher to crack, compared with how it has fished in the weeks leading up to the event.

Pegs used were 52 to 79 in a two in one out basis, contrary to the initial view that alternate pegs might be utilised. Following detailed scrutiny of qualifying events and all other matches the decision above has been arrived at solely in the interest of fairness.

At the end it was venue and method specialist Robertas that prevailed with 11 kgs plus just 180 grams ahead of another star feeder and venue specialist Rimantas. The mightily competitive Darren Fairhurst took third spot just 1kg back and wily Philip Jackson as ever showed his undoubted skill, with a brilliant 4th spot.

Well done to all our finalists on making it to the final shootout and for making it such a competitive event.
Section winners of €100 each today were:
  • Shamie Winters
  • Johnny McKinley
  • Jim McAllister
  • Brenton Sweeney

The County Monaghan Pairs five day festival kicked off on Monday 12th September with 28 anglers or 14 pairs lining up to do battle – more from this next week.

Rain hampers play for Limerick County Pike Anglers

A fine reward for enduring dirty conditions

The Limerick County Pike Anglers Association resumed their competition schedule last weekend after a summer rest period. But the very wet conditions that were forecast for the day put many of their anglers off, and there was a low turnout, with only 7 anglers being brave enough to face the dirty conditions.

Catches were relatively slow on the day for most anglers, but Tommy Williams put in a strong performance, winning out with a strong 37lb+ bag.

Full results as follows:

Seniors:
1st Tommy Williams 37lb7oz
2nd Barry O’Donnell 6lb8oz
Juniors:
1st Thomas O’Donnell 3lb1oz
Senior Heaviest Fish:

Newbridge & District Pike Anglers start their competition season with a double match

As most pike angling clubs avoid holding competitions during the warm summer months, they are generally primed and ready for action by the time the cooler September weather rolls in. So Newbridge & District PAC made up for their lack of action over the summer by holding back-to-back competitions last weekend.

Fishing a river venue, they fished from 9.30am to 5.00pm on Saturday, and were back on the bank at 6.00am on Sunday, fishing through to 3.00pm. Many of them bivvied up on the bank for the night and enjoyed the camaraderie of being back on the water again.

Unfortunately, the pike didn’t join in in the festivities, and they remained tricky to catch throughout the weekend. A total of 62 fish were caught and released over the weekend by 17 anglers, but there were no doubles to be seen. However, better days lie ahead, and we are sure it won’t be long before they start to encounter some better fish.

Sunday deluge fails to deter hardy South Shore anglers

Damp day on Wicklow North

South Shore SAC had an eye on the weather leading up to last Sunday’s match, and their preferred venue of Kilgorman Beach had to be switched in favour of the more sheltered Wicklow North as strong winds were forecast for the Wexford venue. As luck would have it, Saturday was a lovely autumn day, but by the time it came to match day, the fine weather had turned into a biblical-style deluge. The rain, however, didn’t dampen spirits too much, and 31 anglers ventured forth to battle it out on the day.

Torrential rain makes for a long day on Wicklow North Beach

With clearer than usual water meaning angling was going to be tricky, it was important to get off to a good start, and things were looking up as the first hour saw plenty of fish coming in, including trebles of gurnard. The fast pace slowed down considerably thereafter, as bites dried up, and by the end of the day, the overall tally of fish was less than would have been hoped. Results as follows:

Wicklow Boat Charters add bass to their repertoire

Not content to be one of the leading charter boats in terms of specimen hunting, Wicklow Boat Charters are always looking to broaden their horizons and have now added bass to the list of species targeted. They have been exploring a few different marks and techniques and have had results on three out of four trips so far which is a decent return for their forays.

Wicklow coast bass

They are, of course still producing with their bread and butter species, with another specimen size tope during the week, this time for Adam Quinn.
