Sahara dust sunsets, sea trout & several other species for Killybegs Mariners

Killybegs Mariners were active as ever last week and reported some great beach fishing for sea trout. Gavin Dorrian did particularly well on a couple of evenings not only enjoying some stunning Sahra dust sunsets but also catching good numbers of fine sea trout up to 53cm!

What a stunning sunset!

Mariners also had a great day offshore out the bay during the week with a total of nine species between them, which is not bad for so early in the year. Gavin Dorrian and Daragh Mc Guinness had seven species each but with sheer skill and bait presentation Cormac Walsh beat them with 8 specie.

First salmon of the season caught on Carrowmore Lake

After salmon fishing kicked off on Lough Beltra last week it was just a matter of time until Carromwore Lake would produce the first salmon of the season.

On March 25th, local lady angler, Chloe McDonnell who was ghillied by her Dad Martin got the ball rolling on Carrowmore and landed the first salmon of the season.

Another fish was caught on Saturday 26th March by visiting angler Didier Letourme.

Didier Letourme also lucky on Carrowmore

The rising temperatures certainly helped to get the fish moving and fishing is expected to improve from now on as more anglers will be venturing out on news of the first fish being landed.

Lough Erne on fire for client of Border Fishing

Lough Erne on fire

Gerard Smyth from Borderfishing was in touch with us again to tell us about some of the fantastic fishing he and one of his clients have experienced over the past week. Read his report below…

So this week we had gig game angler Thadd Cheng over from Singapore. It was Thadd’s first time fishing for pike and a big change from jungle trekking for peacock bass and snake heads.

Speaking to Thadd over last few months I knew he was a very capable angler and his track record spoke for itself.

It was a day of plenty hits with multiple double and triple rod hook ups and plenty of action which kept us busy. However, it did take bit to see what the pike wanted on the day but then it was all action right until sunset. Between casting and trolling the numbers stacked up to 23 in total landed plus a few lost.

All in all it was a fantastic day with a great guy and plenty of laughs. Looking forward to our next few outings while he is here in Ireland. Wild Irish trout is next on his list, then back on to the pike to chase down a few big Esox for him.

Some more salmon reported from the River Moy

An angler fishing on East Mayo Anglers Association waters

Osgur Grieve reports from the River Moy…

River Moy Angling Report week ending 27/03/2022

There have been four salmon reported for the week. First off the mark was Mick Duffy on the 23rd with a fine 10.5 lbs. salmon, caught on a worm on East Mayo Anglers Association (EMAA) waters in an area between Ballylahan Bridge and their disabled access point. This was the first fish reported from EMAA waters this season!

With water levels dropping every day due to the fine weather the river was coming into good order for the fly. Joey Casey read the water correctly and fished the fly on EMAA waters downstream of their disabled access and was rewarded with a fine 11 lbs. springer, which is the first salmon on the fly for EMAA this year.

James McMordie fished on the Moy system and had a fine salmon estimated to be in double figures on the 26th in bright sunny conditions, while Peter McHugh got things rolling on Ballina Salmon Anglers waters with their first salmon of the season! Peter’s fish weighed 10 lbs. and was caught on spinner from an area above what is known locally as “the flag” in Ballina town. This is Peter’s third time in a row catching the first salmon of the season on Ballina Salmon Anglers waters!

Water levels were dropping slowly all week from 0.8m to 0.53m at Ballylahan Bridge monitoring station and water temperatures stayed in around 9˚C.

Surprise Mullet for West Cork angler

Great surf at Dunworly

West Cork Fisher ,Jeremy Smith, who usually targets bass along the Cork coast sent in a report of a surprise mullet…

Not the expected bass but a surprise mullet for Jeremy

Jeremy was fishing for sea bass on the west side of Inchydoney Beach. But instead of the expected bass a 4 lbs. mullet took the razorfish bait offered on a 4.0 hook. After a while, however, Jeremy had to move marks as the beach got a little too busy with surfers.  He moved to his “home mark” near Dunworley where he met up with his fishing friend Steve but unfortunately there was no show of bass either. In the meantime, Jeremy managed to land a few schoolies using lug worm on running ledger but is also looking forward to target the more elusive gilthead bream which is another favorite species of his. Jeremy had gitlheads up to 6.5 lbs. from the local marks in the past…

New club record set at Leinster Pike Angling Club’s March competition

Fishing a river venue, the anglers were lucky to have some superb fishing with 148 pike caught and released on the day. With figures like that, it’s no surprise to hear that their heaviest bag record was broken by Jodie Kiernan who managed 22 fish for 73lb 11oz.

Junior angler shows how it’s done in Limerick

The Limerick Pike Anglers held their sixth competition of the winter season last week in far from wintry conditions. Most of our reports from them this year had them facing freezing temperatures, cold winds or torrential rain, but last week this all changed as the sun came out and anglers were able to enjoy a bit of rest and recreation while fishing rather than the usual hardship.

It was a junior angler who came to the fore on the day as Thomas Williams landed two eight pounders in short succession to top the table on the day beating all the adults including his dad who currently tops the league. The next best catch of the day went to the angler who managed to fish a pack of biscuits out of the water before they got a soaking…

Quick with the net to prevent a soggy biscuit…

See the Limerick County Pike Anglers Facebook page for a full report.

Results were as follows:

Seniors:
1st Tommy Williams 12lb07oz
2nd Gavin Cashin 2lb3oz
Juniors:
1st Thomas O’Donnell 16lb05oz
Senior Heaviest Fish
Thomas Williams 7lb15oz

Menapia SAC blowin in the wind…

Menapia Sea Angling Club were out on Ballyhealy Beach at Kilmore last week for their latest club competition. They were greeted by high winds on arrival at the venue which somewhat dampened expectations but with fish showing from the first cast, the winds were soon forgotten as anglers concentrated on bagging up.

The winner on the night was JJ Roche with 10 fish for 550 points, closely followed by Kieran Dempsey with 11 fish for 448 points. For a full report see Menapia SAC Facebook page.
