Over 6000 salmon recorded on the Moy so far!

Kevin O’Boyle reports from the River Moy…

Heavy rain and thunder bursts brought a lot of water into the Moy catchment. On Monday morning, water levels at Cloongulan Bridge read 0.679m and rose through the week to a high of 1.391m and dropped back to 0.733m by Sunday night. Water temperatures remained around 12˚Celsius.

A total of 303 salmon were recorded for the week with a sizeable amount of salmon released. This amounts to over 6,000 salmon recorded for the year so far, with only a few weeks angling to go.

Ballina Salmon Anglers had 45 grilse for the week.

The Reidy brothers from Loughrea, all members of Ballina Salmon Anglers Association, who had 7 salmon between them spinning along the wall above the salmon weir in Ballina recently

Mount Falcon Fishery reported 38 grilse. Ten of these fish were caught by fly angler Michael English from the UK over four days and all were returned.

Attymass Anglers reported five salmon for the week.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers produced 16 for the week, while Coolcronan  had 3 salmon for the week.

Byrne’s Fishery reported 18 fish and Armstrong’s 23, best at 7 lbs. on worm.

Gannon’s and the Foxford Fishery produced 22 fish each.

Foxford Salmon Anglers reported a total of  61 grilse from their waters with a good percentage returned, while 7 grilse were reported from Foxford Town.

The Clongee Fishery reported only 5 salmon for the week with best fish at 7.5 lbs. on the bubble and fly and 4 fish released.

East Mayo Anglers’ waters produced 33 salmon (15 released).

Reports suggest that sea trout fishing in the Moy Estuary was very slow and hard work for the week.

Tough Conditions on Conn & Cullin

Ryan Leonard releasing a trout for just over 1.5 lbs. in Tolans Bay

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Lough Conn & Lough Cullin…

Trout angling is proving to be hard work on the lakes these days. Sedge hatches are patchy and weather conditions are not helping.

With only five weeks left, conditions will hopefully inmprove towards the end of the season.

A few groups of Anglers fished out of Cloghans Bay, and they all encountered some small trout on sedges, daddies and bumbles with all trout released.

Brothers Brendan and Cormac Murphy had 2 trout each for roughly 0.75 lbs. on dry sedges (all released) in Cloghans Bay and Sandy Bay.

Cormac Murphy released this trout for 0.75 lbs. caught on a dry sedge

In South Conn, Ed Mc Loughlin and Pat Carroll from Co. Offaly had a few trout to sedges and Green Peters over two days fishing along Brackwansha Shore and all the Bays towards Poteen Island. Best trout for 1.25 lbs. all returned.

Across the lake in Massbrook, Galway anglers Paul Keogh and Des Walsh had a few trout to Dabblers and Green Peters in just two hours after spending 3 days on the Lake.  Best trout 1.5 lbs., with all released.

Outside Castle Island near Bog Bay father and son team, John and Robin Bozeman from London had one trout each on pearl dabblers, all just over 1 lb. returned.

Trout released by Brendan Murphy for just 0.75 lbs. on a dry sedge

Ryan Leonard fishing with friends had a few rises and caught one trout for just over 1.5 lbs. on a Green Peter before releasing again in Tolan’s Bay.

Ian Wise and Johnny Warren from Crossmolina fished out of Enniscoe, while they rose a good few trout, they had only 4 trout to the boat, best 1.5 lbs. on a Green Peter all released.

100cm pike

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports…

It was a pleasure to guide Joe and his son Jack last weekend and it sure feels good to be back doing what I love doing: Guiding anglers to enjoyable and often memorable angling experiences.
Well, Joe had a nice double measuring 103cm and Jack had a few smaller fish. And to fill the gaps some obliging perch offered some fun fishing as, too.
It is always nice to get good feedback, so I will just share what the guys had to say:
“Hi Bodo, Jack and I had an amazing fun filled day with you. Jack was delighted with the time you spent with him. Please feel free to use any photos you like. Bodo your professionalism on the day was top class it was all interesting and funny at the same time well done! We left you on a high. Until we meet again the best of luck to you and thanks again.
Joe and Jack”

Summer league final & some more Donegal bass for Killybegs Mariners

58cm bass for John Cunningham

Members of Killybegs Mariners SAC had some lovely local bass over a number of evening sessions including a club record length since January of 58cm for John Cunningham on bait and a nice 52cm on lure for Christopher. John Burke also had a bass on the big tides.

Killybegs Mariners’ 9-leg summer league reached its finale last Friday. Read their summer league roundup below…

With the 9-leg summer league reaching its finale last Friday night at Fintra Beach, there was plenty to celebrate for eventual winner, Club Chairman Cormac Burke who retained his slender lead over 2nd placed Shane Cunningham who, along with Darren Rawdon and Brian Smith, pushed him all the way over the final few outings.

Indeed with just an hour to go in the final leg, any one of the four aforementioned anglers could have swept to overall league triumph with a couple of late fish – a good indication of how competitive this year’s league has been.

Due to the fish off the beaches being more scarce and generally smaller in size at this time of year, the Mariners’ summer league never draws as many entries as the more favoured winter version but nonetheless some 15 anglers participated throughout this year’s summer league at various stages.

Sponsored by Mooney Boats, the summer league was fished over nine outings (with anglers allowed deduct their two worst scores), and took place at six different venues (Fintra, Nairn, Rossnowlagh south, Rossnowlagh north, Glencolmcille and Inver) and in total produced some 12 different species – all of which were measured, recorded, witnessed and returned alive.

Many club anglers will now be eagerly awaiting the start of the 2021/22 winter league which will begin after the club’s AGM on Monday 13th September.

Ton up! Tomi nets ferox no. 100 on Corrib

A fine fwerox trout to mark the century - no. 100 to the boat this year!

Angling guide Tomi Kurman specialises in fishing for big pike, and the impressive ferox trout of Lough Corrib. After taking a sporting break from the ferox during the hot weather, he was back at it over the last week or so. He reached a huge milestone on Sunday morning, with the 100th ferox trout of the season coming aboard! Paul Byrne was the lucky angler to benefit from Tomi’s expert guidance on this occasion.

A fine ferox trout to mark the century – no. 100 to the boat this year!

Ferox fishing has picked up again, with several more fish to the boat this week, and the count now at 106 or possibly more. Fish up to 82cm have been landed, the biggest weighing 15lbs 7oz. All fish released again of course, and this week catch-and-release was again vindicated when one of Tomi’s guests caught a pug-nosed ferox that was caught twice in two days earlier in the season – 15 miles away!

Another one bites the dust!

Lovely markings on this trout

Yet another happy angler

Pike fishing has also been good, with fish up to 107cm (~21lbs) caught, and plenty of high doubles among them.

Robert Byrne was happy with this pike, enjoying a great day out with his two sons,

Great fishing (again!) on charter boats in west Clare

A fantastic ling for this young man

Luke Aston, skipper of the Clare Dragoon has been showing some young anglers some great sport this week. On a lovely calm day they enjoyed some great fishing on the reefs off Loop Head, with great ling and pollack fishing. They even put out a shark trace and managed 3 porbeagle and a blue shark!

Earlier in the week he fished in the estuary with a group and they had tope, bull huss and thornback ray.

Sean Maguire, who skippers the Lady Gwen II, reported a fine porbeagle of 181cm for one of his guests this week.

A fine strong porbeagle of 181cm.

Earlier in the week, fishing up the estuary with a family group, Sean says “young Elliott Glover reeled in his first porbeagle shark that was feeding on our catch. Possibly the first one I know that was caught so far up the Shannon estuary.”

The look says it all. A delighted Elliott Glover with his impressive porbeagle shark, and his family of course.
Happy faces!

Nothing fancy about fly fishing, everyone should give it a try

Fly fishing
A parr for Charlie

Dan O’Neill, fishery manager at Mount Juliet, is back with a second update from the River Nore this week…

It’s always a great to hear of children taking up fly fishing or any type of fishing. At times there can be a certain type of intimidation felt when the words “fly fishing“ are mentioned which shouldn’t be the case as young Charlie Downey proved at the weekend.

fly fishing
Charlie Downey gets his fish

Weather forecast wasn’t great but it didn’t deter Charlie he was a very determined to nab a couple of trout. Starting out at George’s Wall the wind was slightly strong upstream and very few trout rising on the flat water. Sedges were hatching, passing us in swarms pushed by the wind. It was hard fishing and I probably would have called it a day and took to the fly tying vice but Charlie and Derek had different ideas . Their persistence paid off with some lovely trout caught. Beautiful trout, some with really bright red spots, others dark with beautiful blue tinted gills.

Fly fishing
A parr for Charlie

Swinging wets was the method of choice today. Partridge and Orange was quite successful with some fish falling to Snipe and Purple. Watching Charlie fish for a while it was clear to see that this young angler will spend many many hours tricking trout. Watching other people catch fish is far more rewarding to me than ever catching one myself.

Great to see such a young enthusiast and his dad  on the river learning the ins and outs of fly fishing and successfully landing many wild brown trout.

Well done to Charlie and dad Derek!
