Water very low on Bandon, a few salmon caught but rain needed

Jason Nash from the Bandon Angling Association reports from the Bandon…

As water levels drop lower and lower, fears are growing we are going to see a repeat of last summer. Fingers crossed this isn’t the case and we get a much needed flood shortly.

Thankfully, although the water is low, it is very clear and largely algae free. A few salmon were caught last week to 10lb. A couple were lost also. Shrimp and spinner worked best and it is good to see some more fish in the system now.

We would like to remind all anglers that no dogs are allowed to be taken onto club waters when fishing. This has been a club rule for a long time now and must be adhered to at all times. Breaking this rule is disrespectful to farmers, landowners and fellow anglers. It will not be tolerated. Acknowledgement of this rule is greatly appreciated.

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Dutch couple mix pike fishing with sight seeing for great holiday

Kevin Lyons reports from Melview Lodge…

Dirk
Dirk on the water

Dirk and partner Miranda from Holland enjoyed their week in Ireland while staying with us at Melview Fishing Lodge. Dirk being a keen Pike angler took time out for a few days for some Pike fishing and the rest of the time was spent visiting various parts of Ireland and taking in some of its views and hospitality it had to offer. It was a great week for them and also very enjoyable and let’s not forget some of the Pike he caught during his fishing sessions. Thanks guys and hope to see you again some time.

A visitor fishing on his own, reported a bag of 20 from Carrigavantry on dry olives and the following day caught 25 on black buzzers from Knockaderry.

Join in the fun while the weather is suitable!

The harbour and facilities were co-funded by IFI and LEADER.   Day tickets are available and club membership is open to the public.

Please note on Sunday 02 June no boats will be available on Knockaderry has the fishing is reserved for a fund raising competition for anglers with disabilities.

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

More nymph action for trout anglers on the Nore

Dan O’Neill reports from Mount Juliet on the River Nore…

Nore trout

A slightly breezy start to the weekend pushed fly anglers looking for the more sheltered runs on the river. I decided to have a few casts myself on the fishery early Saturday morning. Starting out with the trusty “PTN“ it wasn’t long before the first trout came to the net. Not a big fish by any means but a fish that was in wonderful condition.

Nore trout

I had a few more trout over the next 30 minutes so looked to my fly box to test out some of the nymphs that are usually frowned at. Putting a pair of the chosen on I began to fish the middle of the run. After a few casts I had my first hit which gave my confidence in these nymphs a little push. Now fishing a little more confidently, I tried a short run a little further up. The first cast produced a beautiful trout that gave me a great run around and showed some great acrobatics. 3 trout followed this and each gave a great fight using the current to their advantage at all times, making it quite interesting.

tout

There were also a few other trout anglers out that had just as much success which is great to see. A great stock of trout in the river this year and all seem very healthy and in great condition.

Drogheda Hosts French Group from Lille in France

Peter Cunningham from Boyne Valley Fishing guides has been in contact to let us know that a French group of 15 visitors from IDEC in Lille have been hosted recently for a days trout fishing on Barnattin reservoir just outside Drogheda in Co Louth.

The group had just arrived the previous evening and most of the group had fished before but help was available for those who had not. Spinning and bait fishing were the methods of choice. After a relaxing morning by the water, with plenty of banter among the group, they stopped for lunch which had been prepared from Irish and locally produced products.

There were only 5 or 6 fish caught before lunch but the afternoon session produced 11 more trout giving a grand total of 17 fish. The day finished up with a fly fishing demonstration on Kilineer and in the evening the group visited a local hostelry to sample some fine Irish produce and enjoy some traditional music.

Better than expected fishing for Fermoy Festival

NCFFI report on the weekend’s fishing at Fermoy…

Blackwater

This fishing for the festival anglers was better than expected with conditions less than favourable; gin clear and low water levels on the River Blackwater. Fermoy AC were met with less than half the usual swims to fish from with the collapse of part of the weir causing the water levels upstream to drop 5ft. The fishing is inaccessible with this decrease in the water level which has led to some banks being more than 8ft from the waters edge. But pegs were found for the visiting anglers.

National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, NCFFI

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, NCFFI has been representing coarse angling in Ireland since 1962, the federation was formed by a group of angling clubs who foresaw the need for governance and a presence on the international match scene. The founding clubs were Fermoy AC, Prosperous AC, Cavan AC, Royal Enfield CAC and Ballinamore AC who were at this time facilitating the huge numbers of visiting anglers coming to match fish working hard to promote angling tourism which continues today.

Coarse angling in Ireland is closely linked to tourism due to the fine selection of natural venues from the North to the South of the island utilised by anglers from home and overseas. Domestic championships have as a result always been open to the visiting angler and the festivals run by our clubs continue to attract large numbers from overseas.  For details of future events please visit www.ncffi.ie
