Luke Aston from Carrigaholt reports:

So for the second time in a week……SixGill 🦈🦈. This time it was a father and son team in for two days and towards the end of the second day of the trip, this little beauty came along. At 10 feet and 700lbs it gave a good 40 minute fight. Well done Patrick!

Skipper Luke even had a chuck himself a couple of days later and managed to catch a few fish over the reefs where the fishing was good.

Even the skipper gets a go now and then

Waterville report w/e May 21st

Vincent Appleby reports from the shores of Lough Currane:

15/5/19 I’ve had emails all day because anglers were under the impression that the Waterville Fishery was totally C&R, this is incorrect, it’s only Sea Trout that are totally C&R. Now today’s action there were only two boats out and all was quiet on the SW front. Wind SSE fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 17.6°C.

16/5/19 All quiet on the Wild Atlantic Salmon front in all departments. Wind SW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 18.0°C.

17/5/19 There were just two boats out manipulating the calm waters of Lough Currane and going by the Currane smoke it was black in all departments. Wind light and variable with reasonable cloud cover, very humid and light rain late this afternoon. Yesterday’s weather maximum air temperature 15.1°C .

18/5/19 All quiet in the Wild Atlantic Salmon department and the same goes for the  C&R Sea Trout department which isn’t surprising because Local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com reported that it was very cold out there in an East wind. Wind ENE light to fresh with good cloud cover.

19/5/19 Straight to the apology department and yes I failed miserably in my duties in forgetting to report yesterday, a fine catch by Dutch angler
Mr. Tony Van-vooren, firstly Tony was celebrating his 70th Birthday and his first time on Lough Currane and caught and released four fine Sea Trout and a few Brown Trout and sadly lost a Salmon while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected]  by all accounts Tony was delighted with his days fishing Birthday present,  which his daughter very kindly gave him, on behalf of all the Currane anglers a very Happy belated Birthday Tony. And in Tony’s own words I’ll be back! Now today’s action and all the Salmon and C&R Sea Trout headlines come from UK angler Mr. Michael Fish. While trolling with his Gillie caught a fine 9 lbs. Salmon and finished his day with a bit of fly fishing and caught and released a fine Sea Trout in the 2 lbs. class. For the rest of the Currane Anglers it was all quiet on the SW front and talking of SW, the wind was NE light and bright and sunny all day.

20/5/19 It felt like the Lough Currane anglers were fishing on glass today and sadly all the anglers were talking about at the end of the day was reflections of what could have been. What wind was there was W bright and sunny all day.

21/5/19 Your Weather forecast is the news of the day, bright sunshine with reasonable cloud at times and a light wind from the West, so it’s no wonder that the Lough Currane Anglers were picking their brains with frustration and with the lake getting lower every day it isn’t easy. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 15.1°C.

West Cork fishing well for Irish Deep Sea Charters

Adrian Nowotynski from Irish Deep Sea Charters sent us this report on the season so far in West Cork:

Drift fishing has been very good, Codling have turned up in great numbers this year and we’ve been picking up a good few nice size Cod as well.

Not much sign of Mackerel yet but good Pollock have been on the feed since the start of the season.

As well as the Cod we’ve been seeing a large amount of Ling at anchor as well as on the drift.

Ground fishing started slow but this weekend saw a major improvement with numerous Ling to 15lb, the first few conger of the season despite the lack of fresh bait and Pollock to 10lb at anchor.

There’s also a lot of wildlife in the area with hundreds of dolphins, numerous Minke whales and harbour porpoise about on most trips. Our first shark trips are about two weeks away so hoping to have a good showing of Blues by then.

Jim and Adrian Nowotynski are a father and son team that skipper the Rod’n’Reel and Boy Scott out of Union Hall and Glandore Harbour.  We have excellent fishing with huge variety all within 45 minutes of leaving port – so more time fishing.

Quiet lately but Slaney wakes up at weekend

The Slaney River Trust reports on the salmon fishing…

salmon
One of three caught by one lucky angler on Sunday

While the river was generally quiet for the last 2 weeks there was a flurry of action on several lower beats last weekend as a few pods of fish appeared with reports of 3 fish lost by one angler on Saturday. A little further upstream an angler landed 3 the next day. It seems they have now mostly run through.

Upstream has been slow but Ger Mellet got this one on the Tullow water a couple of weeks ago.

A few good salmon caught and released on the Blackwater

Water levels are not bad but the bright conditions have not been much help on on the Blackwater in the last week. Yesterday a cracking 8lb fish was landed at Fort William in the Abbey pool. Cyril Byrne did well  and had great sport on his fly rod. Over the weekend Alan Nolan from Cork had a beautiful salmon of about 12lb fish off the Ellis beat also on fly.

On the Blackwater Salmon Fishery another good fish was caught and released towards the end of last week and on Monday evening Pete Davis had a lovely looking fish which was also returned.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

A fine Corrib brownie for Gearóid

Father and son duo Daragh and Gearóid Browne (9) spent the afternoon on Lough Corrib recently; Gearóid was on the dap while dad Daragh fished wet flies in the Galcarrick Island area. Despite tempting a couple of fish to the dapped Royal Wulff Gearoid couldn’t hook one but he was happy to play and land the fish that his dad hooked on a small wet fly! The fish stayed on despite an acrobatic fight and the resulting photograph speaks a thousand words.

Brownie for Gearóid Browne

Apart from the excitement of catching and releasing a cracking wild brown trout like this one, the best part of the day was pulling off the lough for lunch and getting to explore a wild, uninhabited island as only nine year olds know how.

Hopefully this was the first of many Corrib adventures for Gearóid……

Forecast of rain in Kerry sees hopes rise with salmon and sea trout anglers

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

21 May: For the first time in a month we have good news from the Met Office. We have heavy showers forecast for today and there is rain moving into the South West on Wednesday evening through until Thursday. The week end is given to be broken again so with the high tides and the rain we should have a good run of fish.

Junior pikers have great day with Newbridge Anglers in All Ireland qualifier

Brendan Jarvis of Newbridge District Pike Anglers reports on their latest competition…

Newbridge and District Pike Anglers club held the 1st IFPAC All Ireland Junior Pike Championships qualifier of 2019 season at the weekend. The venue  was a section of canal along the River Barrow. The weather gods where good to us with very mild temperatures and no rain. It made a great day and they fished from 11am to 3pm. In total we had 16 juniors who caught and released 5 pike to 6lb 14oz. When the weights where being done we all had pizza, chips and plenty of sambos.  We also had IFPAC youth officer Andrius there who was running a little separate competition where the kids had to cast a lure into a bucket for a chance to win a lovely rod. Unfortunately none of our kids hit the target but was a great buzz watching them take their turns so well done to all involved.

River Suir impresses well travelled angler and tackle developer

Andrew Ryan from Clonanav was fishing with  Leif Stavmo, Product Developer with Guideline. Leif really knows his fishing and made the most of his time on the River Suir and its tributary the Nire. Fishing mostly streamers he caught some of the river’s best fish and managed to impress his Irish hosts.

If Andrew and Kevin were impressed with Leif, it’s fair to say Leif was more than impressed with the fishing. He wrote a super account of experience here:

A Day of Brown Trout River Fishing in Ireland

River Suir
Leif Stävmo and Kevin Shone

Last week I went for a quick, social road trip in Ireland with my son. Looking back on the days there, I am almost in shock that I haven’t visited this lovely country and its friendly people before...
