Irish Angling Update 30 November 2018

A good pollack on a shad at Courtmacsherry

It has been a quiet week for angling in Ireland as the unsettled weather of the last week developed into Storm Diana. Tomorrow sees the official start of Winter and the countdown to Christmas begin in earnest…

Coarse anglers on the River Bann at the weekend enjoyed good fishing with catches to a very impressive 40lb recorded in competition.

Our pike angling news is from competitions also. Tough fishing was reported from a boat competition on Lough Deravarragh. Meanwhile a shore based event fished at Blessington had 19 pike to nearly 17lb landed.

In sea angling news we have reports of bass to over 10lb from the shore at Courtmacsherry along with good catches from charter boats. Shore anglers in Donegal report that the winter species are now dominating their catches.

Salmon angling regulations for 2019 are in draft form and can be reviewed at the following link. Closing date for observations or objections is 13 December 2018.

Finally, all water users along the River Shannon are reminded to take precautions after confirmation of an outbreak of Crayfish Plague (which kills native freshwater White-clawed Crayfish) on a stretch of the Al River. This river is one of the main tributaries to the River Shannon in Athlone and flows westerly, entering the Shannon downstream of the weir. More information here Water users urged to take precautions to limit an outbreak of Crayfish Plague confirmed on Al River, Athlone, Co. Westmeath

And now the weather…

Another storm has blown through and in its place we have had pretty wet conditions. Tomorrow will be damp and cool and the outlook is for unsettled weather with showers or spells of rain at times over the weekend. It will turn colder with some frosty nights during the early days of next week. Who’s watching the “Toy show” tonight?

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

A greedy codling takes a big lug bait.

With the dropping temperatures now the fish species that we would be catching are turning to more winter species. Some lovely whiting to 32cm along with codling, dabs, pouting and congers; there is never a dull moment on the bay.

Good fishing over reefs and wrecks at Courtmacsherry and bass from the shore

Skipper Mark Gannon reportes on the fishing news from Courtmacsherry…

29 November: The last day we made it out to sea was the 21 st November, a pet day and a welcome break in the poor weather we had been having. The angling was first class with Henk landing the heaviest fish;  a Pollack of 9.5 lbs. Apart from that we had medium sized Cod, plenty Coalfish and a few good Ling all on the offshore reefs with shads and pirkers.

The only reports I have re fishing in the Estuary was a Specimen Bass of 10.5 lbs for Finbar Keane taken on the 10th of November. What a fish! Peeler crab did the trick but quite a few medium sized bass on Lugworm were taken near Burren Rock, a great spot to dig lug also.

Tough fishing for pike anglers on Derravaragh in Murtagh Cup

Mick Flanagan reports on the latest pike news from Lough Derravaragh…

Last Sunday in cold bright conditions Lough Derravaragh Angling Association hosted the Murtagh Cup for Pike. Derravaragh has become a very popular venue for pike anglers, and the pike I reckon have seen every lure in the book. Last Sunday proved another hard day’s fishing, and the Derravaragh pike were reluctant to come on the feed.

April Flanagan and winning pike from Derravaragh.

This time of year the feeding window can be very short indeed, and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. Shortly after lunch last Sunday there was a bit of surface movement and sure enough a few pike came on the feed. I teamed up with daughter April and we hooked 5 pike, but managed to land only 2. Not big pike, but on the day worth their weight in Gold. Kieran Evans presented the prizes are Donore Shore.

Congratulations

Earlier in the month the Derravaragh Anglers fished the Weir Cup. The competition was won by Mark O’Connor, second was Kieran Evans and 3rd was Kieran Newman. Presentation took place at Donore Shore and Liam Gisenan Chairman of Derravaragh presented the prizes.

Next event:

Christy Hynes Competition Captain announced that the Moffatt Cup/ Christmas Pike competition will take place on Sunday next December 2nd. Hopefully weather conditions will suit, and we will have another great day out on Derravaragh. Fishing is once again from 11am and all rods back at Donore Shore at 4pm.

A good day on Blessington for Newbridge Pike Anglers

Brendan Jarvis of Newbridge District Pike Anglers reports on their annual Open at Blessington…

26 November:  In total we had 95 senior anglers and 18 juniors taking part.
