Late autumn sunshine on Corrib
Late autumn sunshine on Corrib

Aidan Traynor reports on the 2nd annual “King Of The Corrib” Catch and release Pike comp run by Predator Hunters Ireland, which was held at Greenfields on Sunday the 18th, on a beautiful late autumn day.

Ready for the off – boats and competitors gathering

We had a great turnout again this year – 30 like-minded anglers took to the water fishing in a team of 2 anglers per boat.

The scoring was the 3 longest Pike to be measured, photographed and carefully released again. The fishing was hard work but a few lucky anglers managed to meet the required 3 Pike.

A nice pike on the measure

Winning the junior prizes were Zack Flaherty and Callum Rickard.

Letterkenny Educate Together National School awarded first place among 99 schools and 10 education centres across the country

Letterkenny Educate Together National School has been named winner of the national education programme, ‘Something Fishy’. The students from fifth class were presented with theSomething Fishy’ perpetual trophy and a monetary prize by Joe McHugh TD, Minister for Education and Skills, at the school today. The ‘Something Fishy’ education programme is an initiative of Inland Fisheries Ireland, in partnership with Blackrock Education Centre, which allows students to learn about fish and the environment in a local context. Students enjoy classroom based activities as well as practical fieldtrips with Fisheries Officers as part of the programme, which is promoted and delivered by education centres nationwide. In addition, students compile and submit projects on their learning for assessment by an independent judging panel.

Letterkenny Educate Together School received the national accolade after being commended for their project called ‘Save Our Schools (SOS)’. The project saw the class build a website aimed at engaging other children and young people to learn about fish and the importance of protecting the fisheries resource. The webpage included digital games and video content, all devised and produced by the children themselves.

Some nice skimmers for CM Lakelands at Lough Muckno

CM Lakelands report on the first two rounds of their Lough Muckno Winter Feeder League…

04 November: The first round of our Lough Muckno Winter Feeder League started today on Black and Yellow Islands. Of the 40 anglers who booked into the league  36 fished today, travelling from as far as Kildare and Roscommon. This makes the Lough Muckno Feeder League one of the biggest in the country.

Due to the high numbers fishing 4 sections were used. Fishing was decent with skimmers dominating most catches and there was lots of weights above 4 kg.

Tralee Bay anglers loving tough conditions and catching fish

Tralee Bay SAC fished through miserable conditions at Rossbeigh…

14 November: What a night on Rossbeigh…  torturing windy wet and kind of miserable at times. Having said that we don’t go fishing because its easy we go because we love it and are possibly a bit nuts. A strong horrible wind in the face and a sea that didn’t read the tide book meant that things were going to be hard. Anglers on the beach all worked hard and a fish for everyone was a good result considering.

Phil was quick off the mark in the type of Conditions that he revels in. A nice bass had him moving, Finn had a double shot of a flounder and mini bass. Master angler leader James Allman hit his stride with a Bass and double flat to take a commanding lead. Josh Corbett and Phil landed cracking flounder and then josh another. Rosaleene was in the fish and fresh of the back of her victory in kilcummin was doing damage. Alison and Craig were in the fish but news was quiet from the low and high pegs. A bit of investigation revealed a surprise Leonard who it’s rumoured was ready to pack it in had clearly stood close to Phil and drained his bass calling ability. Bass after bass came in thru the surf. A right battle between Donna and Leonard up the top of the beach. Ned and Bobby Fitz were battling a dirty back wash off the boulders but catching fish. Shane Mc Mahon was also marking fish. Chris had retired to the car at this stage with a solitary flounder but not before witnessing Troy Francis lift a fine flounder up over the rocks only for it to magically blow off his line and seaward? Directly into a gale force wind….

David was heard laughing and possibly James too but karma bit them in the ass and they caught no more fish.

Darkeness fell and 8pm arrived people were glad of it. The scores on the doors were as follows

  • 1st Leonard Foley 8 Bass
  • 2nd Finn Healy 2 bass 6 flats
  • 3rd Donna Murphy 3 bass 4 flats

1st junior
Bobby Fitzpatrick with 2 fish where many seniors would of blanked. Well done Bobby

Special mention to Alison who survived 2 weddings to make the fishing.

37cm was best flat – Josh Corbett

Next competition

Kerry

Our rescheduled competition will go ahead on the 24th of November at Sandy Bay 3 to 7. The awkward tide makes these times a necessity. As we know the venue can suffer from weed and is tight enough so if this Is the case we will fish Cappaclough. If Cappaclough isn’t fish able for what ever reason we will retire to the pier instead. The call for weed will be made as early as possible.

Portumna and O’Briens Bridge for the Munster Coarse Angers league

Munster Coarse Anglers have fished the first two matches of their Winter League at O’Brien’s Bridge and Portumna…

fish
Richard Bedford with his match winning fish

12 November:  A cold, wet, windy day with gin clear water and no flow were the conditions that faced the hardy group of 13 that fished the opening match of this years Munster Coarse Anglers winter league at O’Brien’s Bridge on Sunday. The one bright moment was the capture of this magnificent 4lb 6oz hybrid, by last years league winner Richard Bedford,  which won the match on its own while the rest of us were left scratching for an elusive perch or a almost non existent roach. Well done also Paul 2nd and Tommy 3rd who found a small shoal of perch willing to feed for an hour or so…

Thanks to Paul and Dennis who gave up their Saturday to give me a hand at cleaning out the pegs. Also thanks to Johnathan for taking and sending me on the photo.

19 November: The mighty Shannon was in a better humour for our second match in Portumna today. The river was flowing and holding a bit of colour. There was no rain and the sun shone (at times) all though a bit of an breeze from the east kept the fleeces zip up. It was a case of going for the small fish on the inside slowly working away at a weight of sticking it out on the feeder and wait for bits for the bigger fish.

1st. Paul McCaul with an outstanding 14lb 11oz – 180 small roach caught on the inside on the whip
2nd Richard Bedford who sat it out on the feeder for 8lb.9oz
3rd. Kevin Leahy 8lb 2oz (i caught on the whip all day)
4th Bruce Pennell 7lb 14oz with a bit of both feeder and whip
3rd match 2 December venue to be decided (still not to late to join the league as the you can drop 2 results)

Good weights all round at the Sheemore winter league

Sheemore Anglers report on their winter league…

The third winter league match was on Albert Lock today and it fished very well. Catches were well up on round 2 which was fished at Cloonahee at the start of the month.  Catches were made up of big numbers of smaller fish but even though the fish were at bit on the small side it was an enjoyable competition. Brian Bohan had over 300 roach for his second place weight of 18.07lb.

  • Francis McGoldrick 20.01lb
  • Brian Bohan. 18.07 lb
  • Gavin Brown. 16.09lb
  • Bill Cassidy. 15.06lb
  • Gary Chandler. 14.10lb
  • Robert Howgate. 14.01lb
  • Micheal Fitzpatrick. 13.08lb
  • Joe van der spek. 13.05lb
  • Dave Oddy. 12.10lb
  • Stuart Greene. 12.06lb
  • Ray Carpenter. 11.01lb
  • Andrew Riley. 7.12lb

So some good weights all round and well done to Francis for also winning the golden peg today. The biggest fish was Joe van der Speck’s perch of about a pound.

Sheemore anglers
Last week at a club match also fished at Albert Lock, Brian drew peg 5 and had over 200 fish for 34 lb and a match win.
