Mayfly patchy but excellent fishing reported from Corrib

Declan Gibbons reports from Lough Corrib, where despite sporadic hatches, many anglers enjoyed excellent fishing. Mayfly hatches have been good in some parts of the lake and patchy in others, while Campto buzzer have hatched consistently in some bays and buzzer fishing has produced some great trout this week as conditions were ideal for it on several days. Dappin natural mayfly has also been productive, although getting enough fly for the day has been challenging on some occasions.

In the Cornamona area on Sunday last Cornamona & District Anglers hosted their Mayfly Competition with 45 anglers catching 37 trout for 25.78kgs. In 1st place was Tom Doc Sullivan with 3 fish for  3.245kgs (Tom was presented with the Dr Eamon Sullivan Cup, named after his father, by his sister Elizabeth). In 2nd place was Gerry Dixon with 4 fish for 2.695kgs, and 3rd place went to Gerry McDonnell with 4 fish for 2.600kgs. Best Lady Angler was Eileen Dixon with 2 fish for 1.490kgs, and Tom Doc Sullivan also won the Heaviest Fish prize with a fine trout of 1.835kgs.

Cork angler Billy O’Brien, staying at Lakeshore House B&B for nine days reported having had his best season on Corrib for the last 15 years – he averaged 4 to 5 trout per day with a fish of 4lbs on Saturday being his best fish. Richard Molloy of Ballard Shore Boat Hire & Self-Catering (tel. 087-2879339) reports good fishing in the area with most anglers enjoying great sport on wet mayfly and dapping; Aidan Spooner from Limerick had a trout of 3lbs on Wednesday last dapping.

Tom Ormond had 3 trout for his day’s fishing on Thursday last. Enda Brown on Tuesday last had 4 fish dapping with the best being 4.5lbs, and on Thursday he had a trout of 2.5lbs. Tom Doc Sullivan (www.tomdoc.com) guided Mark Conroy and a party of three from England for 6 days, landing between 40 and 50 fish on dry Wulffs and buzzer with the best fish being 4lbs. Jason O’Riordan and Dave Burke fished for two days and had 12 fish with the best fish caught by Dave being just under 4lbs.

In the Oughterard area Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (tel. 091-552550) reports excellent fishing to buzzer and mayfly; Billy Stinson had 17 fish for one day, all on buzzer with the best fish 5lbs. John Jacks, Scotland & Larry Kelly, Dublin had 38 fish for one week with the best fish being 5lbs. On Monday last Glen O’Connell and Ger Carraig had 8 fish with the best being 4.75lbs. John Gallagher had a super day’s angling landing 5 fish with the best being 7lbs. Joe Johnson & partner had 15 fish all on buzzer for their day on Corrib with the best being 4.75lbs. On Saturday last David Hynes and Mick Kelleher had 8 fish, all on buzzer with the best fish being 4.5lbs.

Kevin Molloy (tel. 087- 9604170) reports from the Oughterard area of improving hatches in the area and angling to match it; John & Robert Broadbend from Donegal had 37 trout for 4 days from 1.5-3.5lbs, all on wet flies. Cork angler Harry Couch & family had 90 fish for 7 days dapping, with fish varying in size from 1 – 3.5lbs.

Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge, Glencorrib reported enthusiastically about the quality of Lough Corrib as Europe’s premier wild trout fishery. With ten personal bests landed at the lodge for the week gone by, guests are well and truly satisfied with the quality and quantity of trout Corrib is producing at present, with 9 fish over 5lbs, 3 fish over 6lbs and 1 fish over 9lbs.  First of all Bob Clark and his friend Jonathan Lee guided by Frank Reilly caught a magnificent 9lb 3oz trout which was weighed and released. Bob wins Catch of the Week for this smashing trout.

And in a week when Larry himself boated 48 trout of a very big average size which all swam away, he had his own PB which was weighed and released at 6lb 10oz. Larry says Mayfly fishing has started producing good bags the last few days and big lumps are still coming out on buzzer so the week ahead looks promising.

The Collinamuck Angling Club held the Halloran Cup on Sunday, a team event with a total of 40 anglers taking part in 17 teams, landing a total of 30 fish over the limit.

The winning team was Mike Keady, Barry Molloy  and Mike Hambleton with 12 fish for 23.14lbs. In second place were Daragh Noone and Fred Martin with 4 fish for 12.92lbs, and third place went to the team of Paddy O’Farrell, Noel Carter  and Gay Fleming with 4 fish 7.48lbs. The Heaviest Fish prize went to Fred Martin with a trout of 4.63lbs, and the best Lady Angler was Dolores Walsh.

Corrib has been extremely busy over the last week, with every pier packed with anglers morning and evening, and boats dotted everywhere on popular drifts. Anglers are reminded to only take what fish you will eat, with a daily limit of 4 trout and a minimum size of 13 inches/33cm (fork length). Also be mindful of other boats on your drift, and when driving to give drifting boats plenty of room. Operation Ephemera is in action, and fishery officers are checking for compliance with size and bag limits.

Remember, every trout that goes back alive is one that may be caught again by another angler, or one that will spawn the next generation. The catch limit is not a target!

Nigel Hirst wins Fermoy Festival after strong start

The Spring Festival Week saw 40 anglers & partners back at Fermoy for some river fishing on the Blackwater. NCFFI report…

The fishing was started off difficult in areas even though conditions were good, water levels up and a little bit of colour. But by Wednesday the colour had run out of the river which ran clear for the rest of the week with the sun shining brightly!

853 dead carp from Lough highlights importance of angler biosecurity measures

Carp mortalities continued at The Lough and Belvelly Lake over the weekend. The total count from The Lough now stands at 853 and 270 from Belvelly, a combined total of 1,123.

IFI officers removed a further 980 kg of carp remains for disposal on Friday 18th, bringing the total weight of destroyed fish to 4,780 KG. On a positive note, there were no mortalities reported from The Lough today, Monday 21st May.

The Marine Institute has confirmed that the virus detected in carp from the Lough and Belvelly is carp edema virus (CEV), genotype 1 which is the type usually associated with outbreaks of Viral Edema of Carp (also known as Koi Sleepy Disease) in common carp. This genotype differs from previous detections of CEV in ornamental koi carp in Ireland which were genotype 2.

Molecular tests for Koi Herpesvirus Disease (KHV), a listed disease under European Fish Health legislation, were negative for all fish sampled. Additional molecular tests for cyprinid herpesvirus (other than KHV) are also in progress.

The gills and skin of the sampled fish revealed an extremely high infestation of trichodinid parasites along with a fungal infection. White spots on the scales were also microscopically examined but there was no evidence of Ichthyophthirius multifilius infection.

Virological screening for Spring Viraemia of Carp is still ongoing with no virus observed to date. Bacteriological tests have revealed no growth of bacteria.

“The loss of significant numbers of carp in the two lakes highlights the need for vigilance among anglers and other recreational users of Irish waters in the cleaning of their equipment and gear thoroughly after use, and also for the need for fishery owners and members of the public to be aware of the potential risk of transferring fish that may carry disease into the wild, and to never release ornamental fish into lakes or rivers”. – Dr. Jeff Fisher, Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Service at the Marine Institute.

IFI will meet with representatives from the MI and Cork County Council to review the situation and discuss steps to be taken on Thursday 24th May.

Some lovely fly fishing on the Nore over weekend

Dan O’Neill at the Mount Juliet Estate reports on the trout fishing on the Nore…

We had 4 trout anglers and 2 salmon anglers on the fishery at the weekend. All together they caught 15 trout to 1 pound. Best flys included Iron Blue Dunn, Black Gnat, Pheasant Tail Nymph and Wickams Fancy.

Saturday: Great weather, high sun all day. The water level was reading .47m on the gauge and the river was running extremely clear. Water temperature was 13.6C in hot, bright conditions. A lot of the smaller trout making themselves known in most of the pools by hitting the surface frequently. Larger fish stayed low until 7pm and then started to show. One salmon showed his presence in the lower pool at the estate boundary no doubt on his way through and wasn’t in any panic to stop for a rest. Geat fly hatches all day and quite a lot of water snails showing themselves near the rivers edge.

Sunday: Different start to this morning. Quite over cast. Water temperature and height were the same as yesterday. Any rain that fell was taken by the dry ground and didn’t raise the river (not that there was much). Some good trout taken with the flys/nymphs mentioned above, the wet fly versions being the best as I found the trout to be slightly sub surface as if awaiting the sun to make itself known through the haunting rain clouds. Never happened all day (thankfully). Small trout feeding strongly all day not in any way shy to the fact I was wading sometimes 1 meter away.

Over the 2 days there were 2 very competent salmon anglers in 2 of the best pools. No fish to show for either angler so quite safe to say there aren’t many salmon about just yet.

Fine weather and falling levels but salmon still running at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…

19 May: Week 20 is just finishing up and while there are still fish running, water levels have dropped off to 15 and we have now had quite a few fine, dry and sunny days. While this weather is ideal for those spectacular photos, it makes catching the elusive salmon even more difficult!

Wednesday afternoon, while people were finding it difficult to see fish in the river, I decided I better have a look myself. It was rather windy, which makes spotting fish difficult. Having said that I did manage to see five in the Whin Pool and then below the bottom bridge I saw four fish running, even though the tide had only turned. I showed these fish to a couple of anglers and they saw quite a few more coming in later, on the tide.

Pat Hagan managed to land a nice fish off Finlough
Pat Hagan managed to land a nice fish off Finlough

After a great Monday morning when we had four fish, Tuesday was a bit slower, but Pat Hagan managed to land a nice fish off Finlough, of 7lbs10ozs on a Posh Tosh. There are plenty of fish showing in Fin at the moment, but they have been difficult to tempt, despite good wind conditions some days. Having said that all anglers fished hard and of course there was the usual social aspect to the week!!

Christopher Jarman landed a fish yesterday from the Quarry Poo
Christopher Jarman landed a fish yesterday from the Quarry Pool

Christopher Jarman, who rarely blanks kept his record intact, when he landed a fish yesterday from the Quarry Pool of 8lbs7ozs on a Monkey Dog, (which is basically another version of a Collie Dog).

Fishing has been quiet so far today, with one fish risen on Finlough. Hopefully the fish are waiting for the rain that is forecast later tomorrow and Monday approx. 30 to 40mms, depending on which forecast you look at. It will be interesting to see how accurate the forecasts on the weather apps are! I

f the forecast is correct, it should put the system in good order again for the coming week. There is the odd rod available next week so if anyone is interested, contact the office or myself.

Tony Hopkins wins Fermanagh Classic Fishing Festival

The 2018 Fermanagh Classic Fishing Festival, sponsored by Waterways Ireland, reached a thrilling finale today on the sun-soaked shores of Lough Erne. It had been a very close contest, with just over a kilo separating the top two anglers going into the final day’s fishing. Tony Hopkins of Lough Gowna emerged victorious, his catch of 3kg 420gms on Cleenish Bridge being enough to get him into top place on the leaderboard, with a total over the three days of 36kg 240gms, netting him the winner’s cheque of £5,000 and the coveted crystal chalice.

In second place overall was Andrew Hampson of Chapel Allerton, whose total catch of 34 kgs 580 gms earned him £2,000 and the runner’s up crystal trophy. Third was Worcester angler Stuart Harford with a total of 27 kg 560 gms, which landed him £1,500 and a crystal sports trophy.  Fourth overall was Stefan Engert from Germany , whose 27 kg 540 gms was enough to secure him £1,000 and a Belleek trophy. Two times previous Classic winner John Potters was fifth with 26 kgs 930 gms and Nottingham angler Rob Parker came home in sixth, with 25 kg 540 gms.

2018 Fermanagh Classic Fishing Festival Day Three Results

The winners of the hotly contested team event, the Waterways Ireland Masters, were ‘Wakefield Trinity’, with ‘Dickie’s Arsenal’ second and ‘Family Affair’ in third place.

Today’s daily winner was Rob Parker from Nottingham, with German visitor Stefan Engert second, Craig Fletcher from Bath third and Cavan angler Peadar Harten in fourth.

The Classic is sponsored for the sixteenth year by Waterways Ireland and is organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, in conjunction with the Inland Fisheries Division of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid to remain closed for at least 2 weeks

IFI officers continue to remove carp mortalities from The Lough and Belvelly Lake, taking 50 carp from the Lough on 17th May and bringing the total combined count from both locations to over 1000.

It is now 2 weeks since the first report of ailing carp from the Lough, which was quickly followed by massive mortalities. IFI awaits further results from the Marine Institute who expect to have their analysis and testing completed by the middle of next week. A meeting between IFI, MI and Cork County Council will take place at that time.

While there is no indication of carp affected by CEV elsewhere, given the continued deaths of carp at the Lough and Belvelly Lake the suspension of angling will continue at Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid for at least the next 2 weeks i.e. until 31st May, while monitoring of other local waters will continue.

Irish Angling Update – 17 May 2018

mayfly
Sheelin Mayfly

It feels very late to be only starting to relay catches on Mayfly, but that’s the sort of season we’re having this year. Coarse angling catches are also a little out of sync with what might usually be expected but there are still some good catches being reported, particularly further North. Salmon and pike anglers have been getting some of the best angling with big fish featuring. Which leaves us the sea anglers who seem to have been worst hit by last week’s winds…

spring salmon
Julian releases his 18lb salmon – CPRsavesfish

Catch of the Week goes to a salmon angler this week. Julian Ciconte caught and released the best Drowes salmon of the 2018 season so far, a fine 18lb fish. A couple of days later he caught released a 16lb salmon. The Drowes has been fishing very well recently as bigger spring fish continue to feature in catches and the grilse run gets underway. The Moy, Carrowmore, Owenmore, Delphi and Galway Fishery are all experiencing a bit of a lift as both spring fish and grilse are running side by side. There are also reports in from the Feale, Laune, Killarney Lakes, Flesk, Ilen, Bandon, Lee, Munster Blackwater and Nore.

Peter Mathison, England with a lovely Corrib trout
Peter Mathison, England with a lovely Corrib trout

Mayfly fishing is heting up on most of the lakes now after a very late start. Buzzer and Olive hatches are still underway on a number of the lakes so fish have a lot to choose from. Fishing on Corrib improved with the rise in temperatures and hatches of mayfly becoming more consistent. Team Ireland won the Spring International on Lough Mask catching a very impressive 45 trout for 1552.3cm, 20 fish and over 600cm ahead of 2nd place Wales. There were reports of the odd Mayfly on Mask this week, so hopefully by the weekend the hatch will start in earnest. Mayfly are well up on Lough Conn now, but on Lough Arrow it will be another day or so until the hatch really gets going. Last week all the fishing on Sheelin was to Buzzer, Olives and lure but the Mayfly hatch there is becoming more established with each passing day and this weekend should see some good catches. Trout to 9lb were landed on buzzer last week – anglers will be dreaming of fish like that coming to a dry May.

bream
There were some lovely bream appearing on the Erne system ahead of the Classic Fishing Festival

The Dutch King of Clubs competition was held last week on venues in Leitrim and Cavan. Fishing was tough at times though single day catches to over 17kg were recorded. Jan Willem Plekkenpol was the overall winner on 5 points. It’s not been easy at the Fermoy Festival which is underway this week. After 2 days of fishing Nigel Hirst was leading with 21lb 14oz. The 2018 Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival is being fished on the Erne system in Fermanagh this week. The venues were producing good bream in the run up to the competition and they are continuing to perform well. Bags to 23.440 kgs were weighed in yesterday and going into the fishing today Andrew Hampson had just over 1kg advantage over his nearest rival, Tony Jordan, but many of the anglers in the top ten will be hoping that they can draw a ‘flier’ on Friday that will net them the top prize of £5,000 and the Crystal Chalice.

Pike anglers have been enjoying some great fishing at venues in Cavan, Longford, Leitrim and Monaghan. Lough Derg has also been fishing well with a good number of 1m plus fish reported by local and tourist anglers.

Charter boat anglers fishing from Leah on Kilalla Bay had some great fishing for a variety of flatties which include turbot and plaice. Charter boat fishing around the Clare coast is improving steadily and some good fish including big skate have been landed. Our shore fishing stalwarts from Donegal found that the normal rock steady fishing on Donegal Bay was disrupted by the winds last week, but fishing will improve once the shoal of fish regroup and move back inshore.

And now the weather…

Staying predominantly warm, dry and settled until later on Saturday. Wet and unsettled on Sunday and Monday. Check for current reports before going afloat but all in all it’s not a bad fishing forecast.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
