Good pike for Jacek before hot weather hit

With water temperatures that began to drop last week before the latest hot spell hit us, Jacek Gorny – creator of L. Corr Handmade Lures – got back on the water to once again target lough pike. Jacek’s guests got some great fish and plenty of them.

Jacek, who has been a recognised fishing guide in Ireland since 2008, specialises in expeditions for big pike and trout – and there are still some dates available in August, October, and November.

Inland Fisheries Ireland statement re deceased trout in the River Blackwater

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is investigating a possible fungal infection outbreak that may have killed up to 1,000 brown trout in the River Blackwater, Co Cork.

IFI is currently assessing the impacted area, which spans an 8km stretch of the river between Mallow and Roskeen Bridge (Lombardstown).

Inspections of the Allow and Minor Awbeg rivers have not detected incidences of infected or dead trout.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is liaising with Uisce Éireann, the EPA and Cork County Council, all of whom have had staff on the river throughout today.

Marine Institute staff are supporting IFI and are undertaking sampling to identify the possible infection.

IFI urges anglers to refrain from fishing in the affected stretch of river.

They are also being asked to wash, clean and dry all equipment, and to avoid crossing catchments with tackle to minimise the risk of spreading any possible infection.

IFI is investigating how a potential disease outbreak may have occurred.

Investigations, at this stage, have not yielded evidence of pollution.

Monitoring and assessment of the river will continue to be undertaken to help identify the cause of the incident.

Water levels are very low in the River Blackwater at Mallow, and water temperatures have been recorded between 17-19°C.

Freshwater fish are vulnerable to low water levels and high temperatures.

Ireland has been impacted by hot and dry weather spells this summer, and these conditions have led to the periodic closure of fisheries in the west in recent months.

IFI continues to appeal to people to report instances of fish kills or suspected water pollution to its 24-hour confidential phoneline, 0818 34 74 24.

Ireland Strikes Gold at Youth Fly Fishing International – Five in a Row!

youths team scotland

Julie Gerry, ITFFA Youth Manager, reports on the team’s impressive 5 in a row victory in the Youth Fly Fishing International…

Ireland’s Youth Fly Fishing Team has done it again—bringing home their fifth consecutive gold medal from the 2025 Youth Fly Fishing International! The competition, held on the legendary Lake of Menteith in Scotland on Sunday, July 27th, saw sixteen of Ireland’s finest young anglers rise to the top under challenging conditions.

Challenging Waters, Unshakable Determination

Led by Team Manager Julie Gerry, Assistant Jenny Casey, and Coaches Denis Goulding and Andrew Duncan, as well as help from our good friend Kevin Dinning,  the Irish squad arrived ready to take on the best. Practice kicked off on Monday with glassy calm conditions and unseasonably high water temperatures. The fish were slow to respond, but the team quickly adapted—discovering that the trout were holding high in the water, contrary to expectations.

By the end of the day, adjustments were paying off, and strong fish were coming to the net. Evenings were spent fine-tuning tactics, sharing fly patterns, and preparing gear for the big day.

Momentum Builds in Practice

Tuesday brought even more promise. With fish rising freely in the calm conditions, confidence soared. The anglers refined their techniques and built solid plans for match day. That night, the team gathered for a final strategy session—ready to give everything on the water.

Match Day Magic

Wednesday arrived with improved weather—a light breeze cooling the lake and boosting morale. After a final pep talk, the Irish team launched into action.

For spectators on shore, the waiting was tense. Boats disappeared across the vast lake, and while occasional catches were spotted, the real drama played out unseen. When the boats returned at 5 p.m., the atmosphere was electric.

Final Results

When the scores were finally announced, the celebrations began:

  • 🥇 1st – Ireland: 49 fish
  • 🥈 2nd – Scotland: 47 fish
  • 🥉 3rd – Wales: 39 fish
  • 4th – England: 20 fish

Ireland’s Total: 49 Fish – 122.14 lbs

Ireland’s Jake Fisher also won the reserves match with 4 fish for 10lb 10oz

That’s five gold medals in a row—an unprecedented achievement in the history of the event.

Teamwork at Its Core

Ireland’s victory is a testament to more than just individual talent. It reflects the strength of a unified team—coaches, parents, supporters, and volunteers all working behind the scenes. From logistics to moral support, the team behind the team made it possible.

Women will be travelling from all over Ireland to take part and full joining instructions will be sent to those who book.

Dan O’Neill from Kilkenny who is an APGAI Qualified Fly-Casting Instructor will be the lead instructor. He will be assisted by Maddy Kelly from Co Down who is the current President of the International Ladies Flyfishing Association representing Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.

Anne Kerrin, Chair of the Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association said,

‘This is an amazing opportunity for women to learn about flyfishing. The benefits of angling have been known for a long time but it’s been a well-kept secret. To be outdoors with nature surrounding you, in beautiful places, really gives a boost to your health and well-being.

The physical aspects of fly fishing, for example, wading through streams, casting, scrambling 5 miles along a river bank, maybe rowing a boat, and sometimes hiking to remote locations are definitely exercises to work your inner core.

It’s known that physical activity releases endorphins which are the body’s natural mood lifters, as they help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. The gentle, low-impact nature of fly fishing makes it accessible to many across all ages, and is a perfect way to release those endorphins.

Learning and mastering the skills of fly fishing – from understanding aquatic environments to tying flies and refining casting techniques – provides a sense of achievement and personal growth. This aspect of fly fishing can boost self-esteem and confidence, contributing positively to mental health.

I hope that this encourages women to think about trying out angling. All equipment will be provided and participants just need to wear warm clothes and to bring waterproofs.’

Super Croneen as Watershed Fly Fishing officially launches online

Angling guide Johannes Bulfin reports on the launch of Watershed Fly Fishing and his PB Croneen from a midland river:

The past week has been wonderful, yet hectic. I’ve had the pleasure of guiding almost every day and, on Thursday, we had an official online launch of Watershed Fly Fishing. The response has been truly humbling. Thank you to everyone who has wished me luck, written about the business, interviewed, and booked fishing with me. I am very grateful.

I did get out for an evening’s fishing for myself too early last week and it resulted in the biggest Croneen (lake run brown trout) I have ever landed. At 58.5cm (23inches), it is highly unlikely that I will ever land a bigger fish from this river, where a 10incher is a “lovely fish”.

I struggle for words to describe the feeling afterwards. Why did I deserve to be so lucky? And trust me, luck played a massive part in landing the fish. The stream is barely wider than a rod length, branches, roots and briars everywhere. Knowing when, where and how, is all fine for finding and hooking the fish, but when that huge fish is on, there is no script..

I had already lost 3 fish in a row, before landing 3 in a row.

I have put in relationship testing amounts of hours on this river. Staying late, constantly changing and tweaking things… Obsessed is the only word for it.

It’s hard to know where to go from here…. Just enjoy it for a while would be smart I guess.

Thankfully as a guide I can aim to help others experience this feeling!
