Big estuary flounders for Tralee Bay SAC

flounder

Tralee Bay SAC were back at The Cashen on Sunday…

The Cashen has been a mecca for us for a number of years now and when it has gone well its been brilliant but we have also had a few dire days here. The tidal nature of the estuary makes it hard to pinpoint where the fish are going to be and where the sand banks might have moved to. Having said that with a mini peel going on we headed to North Kerry for a shot at the big flounders and although their usual numbers weren’t there the quality certainly was.

flounder

Sean Murray, Brian O’Reilly and Eugene were straight into slabs of flounder. Craig got on the board with an 18cm while James landed a lump along with Mick Francis. Reports from under the carpark was slow with the ebbing tide making it hard to fish. Kevin Haydn pulled out a monster 42cm only 3 cm off specimen length. Not to be out done Rosie and Donna both landed 42cm fish from 4 pegs apart was this one hungry flounder or triplets that have a thing for the dubs. James Allman and Eugene both landed doubles but James had hit a real honey hole and all his flounder were coming in between 35 and 41 cm. Ned Fitzpatrick and Bobby were flat out as was Finn and Alison but the fishing wasn’t going to plan for everyone. Chris and troy were trying all ranges and tactics in an effort to beat the blank but one angler went above and beyond. While taking a battering from Eugene and Craig, David went all out and buried a Gamakatsu hook deep in his finger. He then attempted to measure in himself but as they couldn’t decide whether he should be measured length ways or across the wings he didn’t count. Now for the fun part (for the spectators) the removal. Many different accounts will be bandied about some say he cried like a baby…. Some say they thought an animal had been knocked down and was in tremendous pain… A banshee?

The Cashen

Thankfully Eugene saved the day and we were back to Lowes in Ballyduff a bar that has supported us for many many years and to which we are extremely grateful. Our generous hosts had sandwiches and hot food so nice it deserved its own pic.

flounder

In the end Eugene, Craig and James all had 6 fish each so it came down to the math. 3rd went to Craig 2nd to Eugene and James with his haul of monster flounder came in on pole position leading the match from start to finish. Biggest flat was Donna, Kevin and Rosie with a 42 cm flounder Connie won the longest round shared with Mick Francis. Bobby took the junior honours on a hard day at the office.

Congrats to all and don’t forget the junior day on the May Bank Holiday followed by the tag a Ray the 25th 26th of May.

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required.
