Michael Donnellan tells us in an email that fishing on Lough Corrib is picking up this week. So far trolling has been the most productive method as the water temperature only passed 6C last week. nonetheless some fly anglers are getting up to 5 to 8 trout per boat. The cold weather has delayed the Duck Fly hatch but there are reports of some fly coming off now and a few decent trout were taken on duck fly between Headford and Cong.
Trout on a duck Fly
Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge Glencorrib (www.corribangling.com) says he’s had as many as 6 in a day on the Duck Fly now – and some fine lumps were amongst them.
On the trolling side trout to 8lbs have been reported but most catches are around 1.5lbs to 2 lbs mark with average bags of 4 to 6 landed.
The river dropped this week, Monday 19th to Sunday 25th March, and is now at low levels but the good fishing continued. The gauge read 0.50m at the start of the week and was reading 0.48m by the end of play on Sunday. The week brought some lovely spring days and a fair attendance on the fishery. There were some 18 salmon caught and we await details of some catches. Given here are some of the catches entered in the register.

Eileen Carroll Muphy tells us that there are no catches being reported from the Killarney Lakes or River Laune as fishing effort is very low, primarily due to the perception that water temperatures are low.
Reporting from the River Moy, Billy Thornton of IFI has all the latest catches…
With a touch of spring in the air and water levels near perfect The Moy enjoyed a very good week (ending 25 March) with 25 salmon reported caught throughout the system, bringing the total to date to 36. Prospects for the Easter holiday weekend are looking very good.

The association is 60 years in existence this season and is going from strength to strength as the years drift past. Last Sunday conditions were quite good with little or no wind at times, and actually the sun broke through at times.

6lbs plus brown trout from owel caught by Seamus Corrigan.
Lough Owel was a hive of activity when we eventually made out way down to Tullaghan mid month. Heavy snow drifts down to Tullaghan made it impossible for anglers to get on Owel during the opening week, but now its plain sailing and some super trout are being caught on the fly and troll. The trout are in mint condition and feeding hard on stickleback and minnows. Our best trout last the first day was 3lbs 3oz, on the troll. Local angler Pauric Martin from Harbour Court has some super trout up on the 2lbs mark, and we also photographed a group on anglers reeling in some fine fish.
Owel cracker for Tipp angler Brendan O, Dwyer
The lake has been very high, and the water quality is unbelievable to the naked eye, but very cold. I dropped into Insula Magna for a quick cup of tea last weekend, and some idiots left a lot of rubbish on this famous island on Owel. Yes Church Island is called Insula Magna in Irish we are told, their you go never to old to learn.
Happy days. Frank leavy,Pater carroll and Darren Hogan coming off owel.
Seamus Corrigan originally of Springfield was out with pal Frank Stenson and Seamus produced a huge trout of 6lbs 8oz. Brendan O’Dwyer was also in the thick of the action on Owel and had fish to 3lbs trolling small lures. I also met a few pals from Rochfortbridge who were enjoying a day’s trolling. Frank Leavy, Peter Carroll, and Darren Hogan are looking forward to seeing their fishy pic in Angling Focus. Hopefully the weather will settle in the coming days and anglers will be back out on Owel again.

Munster Coarse Anglers were at Portumna on the River Shannon for the Final match in their Winter League…
Finally we got it right. The sun shone and the fish were biting in the final winter league match of this year.
The town section at Portumna produced quality roach with some nudging that mythical 2lb mark, and a few hybrids showed as well. A good sign for the forthcoming Portumna Festival in a few weeks time.
It was also Portumna locals Richard Bedford and Steve Grogan who battled it out for first place. Both were on equal points so it was overall weight that finally saw Richard become this years champion, with Munsters Ian Kelsey taking third spot.
Thank you to all the anglers who fished this year, members and guest your attendance was much appreciated in what was some very taxing conditions that mother nature through at us league starts again October 2018.

The annual Waterways Ireland Open at St. Mullins got off to a slow start but in the end produced some top weights of dace for the winning anglers as all enjoyed their river fishing on the tidal section of the River Barrow. Waterford & District Coarse Angling Club reports…
Anglers arrived to fish this year’s Waterways Ireland Open at St. Mullins to find the river slightly coloured with a little extra water pushing through and the decision was taken by the hosting Waterford & District Coarse Angling Club members to fish the river rather than the alternate canal venue as the water level had dropped a lot over the last couple of days. The morning frost and mist cleared as anglers headed for their pegs with expectations high for good fishing.
The 11am all in saw a slow start to the fishing but the pegs at the upstream end started to produce a lot of dace and that was how it went until the falling tide slowed sport. Pegs towards the top of the stretch produced some outstanding dace nets with new Waterways Ireland Open Champion Gary Doyle bagging the most with a splendid 22lb 4oz net of chunky dace. Sensas sponsored Gary caught most of his 120 fish net on the whip with some on the float from his peg midway between the wires and the platforms. Defending champion Attila Paldeak fished similar methods a couple of pegs upstream but was a little short with his 19lb 8oz all dace net. Upstream end peg advantage produced another all dace net of 18lb 2oz, mostly on the float for third placed David Norbury.
Gary Doyle [peg 10] 22lb 4oz
Attila Paldeak [peg 13] 19lb 8oz
David Norbury [peg 16] 18lb 2oz
Adrian Browne [peg 14] 17lb 4oz
John Browne [peg 15] 9lb 0oz
We would like to thank all the anglers who traveled to fish the match and our event sponsors Waterways Ireland for their continued support.
