Mick Flanagan reports from Lough Owel…
Lough Owel was a hive of activity when we eventually made out way down to Tullaghan mid month. Heavy snow drifts down to Tullaghan made it impossible for anglers to get on Owel during the opening week, but now its plain sailing and some super trout are being caught on the fly and troll. The trout are in mint condition and feeding hard on stickleback and minnows. Our best trout last the first day was 3lbs 3oz, on the troll. Local angler Pauric Martin from Harbour Court has some super trout up on the 2lbs mark, and we also photographed a group on anglers reeling in some fine fish.
The lake has been very high, and the water quality is unbelievable to the naked eye, but very cold. I dropped into Insula Magna for a quick cup of tea last weekend, and some idiots left a lot of rubbish on this famous island on Owel. Yes Church Island is called Insula Magna in Irish we are told, their you go never to old to learn.

Seamus Corrigan originally of Springfield was out with pal Frank Stenson and Seamus produced a huge trout of 6lbs 8oz. Brendan O’Dwyer was also in the thick of the action on Owel and had fish to 3lbs trolling small lures. I also met a few pals from Rochfortbridge who were enjoying a day’s trolling. Frank Leavy, Peter Carroll, and Darren Hogan are looking forward to seeing their fishy pic in Angling Focus. Hopefully the weather will settle in the coming days and anglers will be back out on Owel again.
