Clíodhna with her new PB 15lb 15oz caught on a joey mackerel hard on the bottom.
There was a great turn out from the Keady and District Anglers junior section for a mixed day on the angling front. On the plus side, Clíodhna McKenna completely blew her PB out of the water when she landed a 15lb 15oz pike. this super fish made here the winner on the day. Well done Clíodhna.

The club tells us there was more eating done than fish getting caught but the craic was good and sometimes that is the main thing. Keady and District Anglers wanted to be sure to thank all the parents and grand-parents for their help on the day.
Club secretary David McGuinness with the YouthAction membership pack & the juniors
They also extended their thanks to the Lough Muckno Matches & Festivals Group for the use of the venue. Thanks was also given to YouthAction NI for the membership pack, the juniors loved the wrist bands.
Next event taking place next Sunday 28th May. Meeting in square at 9am fishing 10am until 3pm.

While members of the Keady & District Angling Club fish for most species of fish, the Club is a Pike (Esox lucius) angling club. The club organizes regular Pike fishing events, usually held on a Sunday, with fishing running from 11am until 4pm. The Club also has a proud tradition of encouraging the young people from the wider area to pursue angling as a hobby and this is one of the most worthwhile aspects to club life.
Lough Muckno is located off the N2 on the eastern side of Castleblaney and is the largest lake in the area. It covers an area of circa 325 hectares with depths to 20m. There are a number of excellent shore fishing locations on this lake which can be readily accessed by pike anglers. The main pike fishing locations including White Island, Black and Yellow Island, South Lodge and Toome Point. This lake holds excellent stocks of small to medium sized pike with many fish in excess 20lbs being taken every year. This fantastic water has also produced a number of fish over 30lbs.
We had 20 members fishing the Milltown Cup. The river fishing was very patchy with only the only pike showing up in shallow sections. We had fish up to 17.06lb and in total 54 fish where caught and released. I would like to thank all the members who made the trip.

Stephen O’Flanagan of Killinarden Angling Initiative reports on the hugely successful Angling for Mental Health and Suicide Awareness event held at Oaklands Lake at the weekend…
So here we have it! Our report from Saturday’s Suicide and mental health awareness competition.
50 anglers showed up on the day to compete in the charity match and it started like any other, loads of commotion, banter and excitement! At 10:30pm rods in was called and fish started going into the nets from the off, plenty of silvers and small bursts of carp. The rain beat us with heavy showers but no one gave up and at 3:30pm rods out was called with a sense of relief lol.
At times we were pelted with rain, but no one gave up…
It ended with a very tight finish between the teams with team Sensas winning with 1 ounce, and putting last years winners team Oaklands in second place. Absolutely fantastic day spent with new and old friends.
Bill Brazier from Off the Scale magazine who spent his day taking photos for us. Brilliant man who always shows us great support. Thank you bill.
Also to the ladies from HOPE – Suicide Prevention Drop In Centre Tallaght Who came alond to call rods in and to help with the presentation. It turned out to be a fantastic day of fun and learning.
Pat Cusack said a few words at the event and TBH he choked me up, very moving and truthful speech, well done Pat, Im sure everyone will say the same when I say you got the message of awareness across in a very moving way!
We also want to thank each and every person who came on the day whether to compete or help! you are all amazing people and deserve a huge round of applause for your efforts.
So to finish, thank you to every single person that got behind us and helped us not only raise a great amount of funding but to help raise awareness in the whole stigma of suicide and mental health awareness!

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane which where another specimen sea trout was reported…
18/5/17 I start with the sad news that the Waterville fishery has lost another great angler. Mr. Malcolm Hutton, RIP, of the UK and Waterville, sadly passed away today while doing what he loved, fishing with his rod in hand at the ready. Well Malcolm you may be gone but you will never be forgotten and on behalf of all the Waterville anglers and the good people of Kerry, we send our deepest sympathies to all his Family and Friends. Now today’s fishing notes and there is only one angler that takes the headlines and that is UK fly angler extraordinaire Mr. Sean Smith, who manipulated his flies with pure professionalism and why do I say this because he caught a fine 8 ½ lbs. Salmon, while fishing with is Gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and Neil’s quote of the day was nothing like eating humble pie, all I can say it’s a pleasure to eat it! Wind NW light to fresh and variable at times, with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 1.7mm, Maximum air temperature 14.6c.
19/5/17 What can one say about the Lough Currane anglers this day, well its simple they all failed miserably in their duties in all departments and as one gillie said this evening, what do you expect from we fly anglers, miracles! I replied no Salmon actually! mind you, a wing and a prayer is no harm, so make sure your flie has a good wing and as you look to the heavens your prayers might be answered, but a word of warning be careful as you look up to the heavens you could miss a rise of a life time. Just for the record there were about 5 boats manipulating. Wind NW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover plus a few showers, yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 4.6mm, maximum air temperature 13.0c.
20/5/17 We head straight for the Salmon department and to the South side of the Lake and for good reason, US Angler, Mr. Phil White caught a cracker of a 10 lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com Now we head to the North side and the Bungalow, in the Sea Trout department, Local angler Mr. Jim Sayers, reported that this evening while drifting caught the first lightening fresh 1 lbs. Junior of 2017 and he also was telling me that there were a few nice Brown Trout caught by another angler also fishing out of the Bungalow. Wind NNW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover at times and very cold this evening out there on the lake so Jim was saying. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall o. 8mm. Maximum air temperature 13.1c.
21/5/17 Lough Currane was on the wild side today, with a strong SW wind this morning then veered SE in the afternoon fresh to strong and with good cloud cover. Four boats did venture out onto the wild waters of Lough Currane today, but to no avail, or put it in simple English they failed miserably in their duties in all departments, so on that note we head into yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 2.5mm. Maximum air temperature 13.6c.
22/5/17 All the headlines go to renowned fly angler Mr. Michael Smith of the UK, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Nile O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught and released a fine 4lbs. Sea Trout on the drift and for the rest of the angling community their mobiles were as silent as the Lambs and their heads were bowed down as they headed for the Bar for their nightly inquest on their efforts this day and they could only come to one conclusion, that again we have failed miserably in all departments and I concur. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 2.7mm. Maximum air temperature 15.2c.
23/5/17 Straight to the action Mr. and Mrs. Cadis, caught a cracker of a 9 lbs. Salmon on the troll while fishing with their gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com.
Mr. Cadis
Now to the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats at [email protected] and young angler of the day, Maxime Allonsius, who in the words of his Granddad, caught a nice selection of Trout on a spoon. Wind W fresh and overcast and very humid. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 3.8mm. Maximum air temperature 15.7c.
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts. Vincent Appleby
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Eileen Carroll tells us that he River Bandon rose by about two feet last week following the long awaited rain. The flood brought on a bit of a run of fish and about 8 salmon were reported, two of which were grilse.

For the new year, Bandon Angling Association have set up a new website which you can view here. A new guiding service has been launched in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times. web:http://flyfishing-ireland.com
Eileen Carroll Murphy from our Macroom office reports that there were 4 salmon landed on the Lee last week from club waters. Methods used were fly and spinning. Best fish was 13lbs landed on a fly.

MEALAGH RIVER
No report of catches.

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.
The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
David McEvoy reports from Delphi where they finally had some rain after a long, dry spell…
22 April: Our long dry spell finally came to an end last Sunday night the 14th, when we had 28.5mms or just over an inch of rain. It brought the river from -12 back up to 60. On Monday morning it was however very dirty, but it did clear by late afternoon. The rain was most welcome by most and especially fisheries as it finally gave smolts and kelts the opportunity to embark on their seaward journey. On the Sunday morning before the rain I made a point of counting the number of days we had without rain. It was actually 20 consecutive days with 0.0mms, which may be the norm for our Greek counterpart, but it is rather unusual in the Connemara Delphi to say the least.
Beautiful Delphi
Since then we have had showers of varying degrees but the river did taper off again to 20. However we got some rain on Saturday and Sunday night and it is now running at 40. We are supposed to get a mini heat wave in the middle of this week and then some rain on Saturday, but after the last six weeks I find it very difficult to have much faith in long range forecasts.
Fishing has been slow, despite the rise in water. Week 20, which was last week saw the return on many regulars, all keen salmon anglers and they did fish hard all week. We did actually manage to land two for the week and these were most welcome. Both fish were sea liced, but if they hadn’t been I would have said they had been in the system for two months. More than likely they had been in the Killary for a while and when the water finally came they ran.
A welcome fish at Delphi
Peter Milne had the first fish on the 17th, which was a real joint effort as it was taken at the top bridge. Robbie Burton spotted the fish. Leigh Hookes told Peter when to tighten and John Tappin and Hugh Brennan gave moral support. The fish weighed in at 7lbs7ozs and was taken on a Cascade.
Christopher Jarman managed to follow this up with a smaller fish on the 18th. It weighed in at 6lbs5ozs and was taken on an Agnetha from the Horseshoe pool. Since then it has been slow but on a more positive note I did see three Springers in the Meadow Pool at 2pm today, which is encouraging.
At this stage I must compliment all anglers who have been here in the last six weeks, when conditions were far from ideal and you took it as it came and enjoyed the beauty of the place in spite of the poor fishing, so thank you for that, it does make our job that little bit easier.
At Delphi Lodge, with many years of experience with the timing of the best runs of fish, we have in place a price system that offers both great value fishing and lets our anglers know when they have the best chance to catch a fresh run spring salmon or a summer grilse or Delphi sea trout.
Kevin Lyons reports on the catches of a group of French pike anglers who stayed at Melview Lodge last week…
Sylvain with one of his nice Pike
Sylvain along with friends Franck, Cyrille and Patrick from France had a great weeks Pike fishing at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford.
Franck is all smiles.
The first day produced mainly smaller pike but as the week went on and the days became more overcast the fishing just got better for them, using both soft and hard lures they managed some great pike.
Cyrille with a cracking Trout
The week was finished off with a beautiful trout for Cyrille taken on a soft lure. It was the guys first time to Melview Fishing Lodge but one I’m sure they will not forget anytime soon. Along with the fish caught they lost a few very good fish before they could get them in the net and into the boat, well done lads and thanks for the great company and we hope to see you again in Ireland next year.
