Exhausted anglers stop at shark number 23 as 10 circle the boat

David Hehir, skipper of the charter boat Algerine out of Dungarvan reports on an exceptional shark fishing trip he had last week Thursday 10th of July, the best he has witnessed…

We departed Dungarvan Harbour with our crew at 8am on a beautiful calm sunny day and headed offshore – 25 miles. The drift was very slow but on the hour mark we had our first Blue shark which my son Conor (10) managed to bring to the side of the boat.

From there on out it was non stop action all day everyone onboard had sharks. My father Patrick, Danny, Sinead, Sean and Liam all landed sharks. As soon as I had a shark measured and tagged another was ready to come aboard for tagging. Double and treble hooks were common.

We stopped fishing at Blue shark no. 23 as everyone was exhausted. At that stage we had up to 10 sharks circling the boat at any one time and they were just ripping open the chum bags. For the next hour we fed the sharks with what fish we had onboard. It was amazing to see them to feed on top of the water.

Better numbers of grilse in Blackwater and rain gives cause for hope

Munster Blackwater at Lismore
Munster Blackwater at Lismore

There were plenty of grilse  observed in the Blackwater system last week. The low water levels and high temperatures continued up to the weekend as had been predicted but it was beginning to change as the weekend closed out with some thunderstorms encountered.

Fish were held up in the usual spots just below the tidal reaches waiting for a rise in water and a drop in the temperature to disperse to a few more beats upstream. There were a few catches reported and the salmon landed are reported to be 2-3kgs and fresh.

A change in the weather may be what’s required to improve all fortunes along the river.

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland, usually know for providing a first-class pike fishing experience for his clients reported some great perch fishing.

Lately, Bodo was guiding two US visitors who tried their hands on some perch fishing. Results were excellent with Shawn and Drew catching several fine perch using lures on light tackle. One of 30 sharks caught on Silver Dawn

David Edward’s crew had a cracking day’s shark fishing on Saturday…

Three anglers managed to get an unbelievable 30 Blue Sharks to Silver Dawn on Saturday 12 July. The trip was a birthday gift for Brian Warren, he had never caught a shark before so it was an exceptional present on top of everything else.

The day started on a high. The first fish of landed was a cracking 187cm specimen and of course, it had to be Birthday Boy Brian who was on the rod.

The rest of the crew. Altogether they caught 30 sharks including 4 specimens. Catch of the Week hands down!

Starting with a good fish can sometimes be regarded as a bit of bad luck, where can you go from there? But 29 shark followed and there were 4 more specimens landed amongst them. The only way is up!

Smoothound beach action for Mariners crew in Donegal

Killybegs Mariners enjoyed some great fishing for smoothounds and bass. See their short report below…

Super fishing of smoothounds and bass for the Mariners crew of Chris Whyte, Dessie and Ryan McGinley and Proinnsias Doherty enjoying the run as the hounds gorge on the local crab buffet.

Some great fish over a metre in length measured and returned to the surf. A hard fighting powerful fish that tests the gear to the limit.

First summer floods see Croneen starting to run

Johannes Bulfin of Watershed Fly Fishing was in touch and sent in a great report…

After a busy time of guiding and teaching on stocked stillwaters, it was time to get out and enjoy some fishing for myself.

The “Croneen” have arrived and there is a real buzz of excitement and anticipation around the town of Birr, as anglers seem to materialise out of nowhere! The early summer floods have helped the fish spread out right through the whole system.

I headed out to find a few shoals, which I did. As I lifted into a fish I immediately judged it to be a good one, it didn’t give an inch, instead it stayed very deep and took off on a determined run. I applied intense side pressure (too much) as it was headed straight for the roots of a tree. My tippet burst and the line came back sickeningly slack and I was reminded why I should beef up the tippet for these fish. It left me wondering what size the fish was, my largest last year was over 20inches, this one felt better than that but then again the ones that get away always do.

I landed several fish up to 14 inches afterwards, including two double shots of smaller resident fish. But I kept replaying the big fish scenario over and over in my mind. The fishing was exceptional and I knew I was acting a bit spoiled by concentrating on the one that got away…

I did head out again soon after, and succeeded in landing two Croneen. There appears to be a lot of exceptionally good sized fish this year.
