Massive fishing at Lough Ree International Pike Festival and World Cup

Not alone was there some fantastic pike caught but there was also some fantastic trout also landed at The Lough Ree International Pike Festival and World Cup.

Last week’s competition had 90 boats registered since November  2016, which is no surprise given the €17,000 prize fund. This very popular catch and release competition is fished by pairs of anglers from a boat and all the fish are photographed on a measuring mat before being safely released. The number of 1m plus fish landed is a testament to Lough Ree as a pike fishery.  On each of the 3 days of fishing a 100cm fish was needed to secure a place in the Top 10. In fact, the fish only got bigger with each passing day.

Apart from the daily prizes awarded, the big winners were Stephen Gibbons & Al Rawlings and
Dave Sanders & Peter Vulovic. Each of these pairs caught a pike that came in at 113cm winning them a share of the Longest Pike.

The World Cup title went to Joe McDermott & Pat Healy for their superb 3 fish total of 330cm, made of pike measuring in at 108.25cm + 112.25cm + 109.50cm.

Anglers are asked to keep an eye out for stolen boat engines offered for sale. On Tuesday night 8 outboard engines were taken from boats moored at Cushlough, Ballinrobe. The engines were mostly Honda and Yamaha models, and may be offered for sale to unsuspecting buyers. Anyone who has any information please pass to the Garda Siochana in Claremorris at 094 937 1222.

Ronan Cusack reports superb fishing on Lough Mask again this week despite strong easterly winds over the weekend. Ballinrobe and District Anglers held the annual David Walsh Memorial Development 2 day competition on Saturday/Sunday, which was supported by 80 anglers from across the country. This year’s winners were Ronnie Law from Fermanagh and Trevor Goulden from Sligo. The lads had a total of 12 trout for 16.33lbs. John Lyons and Martin Connors took second place with 12 trout for 14.52 lbs and Hugh O’Reilly and David Connors were in third position with 10 trout for 13.33lbs. David Connors also won the best Ballinrobe angler prize. Eamon Ross from Co Cavan took the heaviest fish prize with a trout of 2.70lbs.

Ballinrobe anglers Chairman Kevin Egan and JJ Walsh present the David Walsh Cup to the winning team of Trevor Goulding and Ronnie Law.

25 members of the Westport Angling Club weighed in 33 trout in a competition on Sunday last in very rough conditions. In first place was Dave Duffy with 3 trout for 5.0lbs. Second went to Jason Sweet with 2 trout for 4.50lbs and in third place was Toby Gibbons with 3 trout for 4.50lbs. Jason took second prize as one of his trout was 3.5lbs.

Clare anglers Dave Egan and Brian Madden fished with David Connors from Armagh on Monday last and they finished with 13 trout, mainly on olive patterns (best fish 3lbs). Eddie Rowe from Dublin had a lovely 3lbs fish on a dry olive while fishing in flat conditions with Mark Rogan on Monday last. Michael McDermott from Castlerea had 3 nice fish on Monday pulling wets (best fish 2.bs). Derek Madden also from Castlerea had 3 trout on buzzer on Monday (best fish 3lbs).

Perfect conditions in Galway and some nice salmon to report

Louis Mathews with a fine 11lbs spring salmon from the Galway Fishery

Spring fishing was patchy this week, with several fish being caught on some days and none on others. Water conditions are perfect for flyfishing, and all the fish caught this week were taken on the fly. Looking over the bridge on Tuesday while going for a lunchtime walk, I spotted 3 nice springers hanging in the current, so they are there alright, it’s just a matter of tempting them!

Among the anglers to score this week were Dublin angler Steve Jones, who landed a nice 9.5lbs fish on fly. Sunday was a good day, with 3 fish caught, including early grilse for Northern Ireland angler Paul Stewart and midlands visitor Padraic Corrigan, who both released their fish caught on fly. Paul O’Malley, also from the midlands, landed a nice 8lbs spring fish, also on the fly.

On Tuesday Jasper and Louis Mathews from Cleggan enjoyed a fine day flyfishing, with Jasper catching and releasing a 6lbs fish, while Louis landed a fine 11lbs springer, which he tried to release but the fish was bleeding too heavily. Finally, Gort angler Colman Counihan had a lovely 13lbs salmon on the fly on Wednesday evening on his first run down the beat.

Fresh fish are in the river, and conditions are excellent for the fly, with one gate open, giving anglers great hope for success in the coming weeks.

Cathal Hughes wins River Suck Angling Festival with 32.520kg

Cathal
Cathal put in another good performance to win over the 3 days

Shane Dunne, of the Suck Valley Angling Hub reports on the River Suck Angling Festival:

The May bank holiday weekend saw a 3 day River Suck Angling Festival take place an the Donemon and Emlagh. Anglers travelled from all over the country including counties Mayo, Galway, Carlow, Roscommon, Cork and Clare but to name a few. This shows how popular the River Suck is nationally for its fishing. Weather on the first 2 days were promised mixed and expected to be better on Monday and so it proved. The venues being used for this 3 day festival were Donamon, where there are 31 wheelchair accessible stands with parking at every single peg, and 2 sections at the newly developed venue at Emlagh. This new stretch was developed by IFI in the latter end of 2016 and has been a terrific success since its development. The development included a new roadway along the river with parking at all the pegs and cutting out the “Trees” section which gives another 8 pegs.

Cathal
Cathal put in another good performance to win over the 3 days

Day one saw the draw take place in the angling centre in Athleague. Getting off to a good start is vital but your rotation is always critical as well.

Day one results

  • Shane Dunne 12.460kg
  • Bill Cassidy 12.300
  • Peter Turner 12.140kg

Top 3 weights all came from the Trees section of Emlagh with Donamon producing a close 10kg weight and good back up weights also. The early pegs on Emlagh didn’t produce at all for those drawn there with just 500grams winning the section.

Day 2 results

roach
Ian Kelsey potential Irish record roach at 1.550kg. Genetic testing is required to ensure no hybridisation
  • Ian Kelsey 15.240kg
  • Cathal Hughes 13.740kg
  • Rory Dunne 11.420kg

Highlight of the day was Ian Kelsey catching what could be an Irish record roach at 1.550kg.
All the top 3 on the day came from the early pegs on emlagh where they struggled on day 1.
The other 2 sections both fished well in blustery weather the Trees section on Emlagh recording a 7kg weight required to win and almost 6kg on Donamon.

On day 3 the top 3 fished the Trees section of emlagh which was producing consistent weights all weekend. The top 3 going into the final day were…

  • Cathal Hughes 23.640kg
  • Rory Dunne 20.320kg
  • Ian Kelsey 19.000kg

Weights were tight as the chasing pack looked to make a charge, especially those going to the early pegs on Emlagh where it had produced good weights the day previous.

Day 3 results

  • Rory Dunne 10.600kg
  • Cathal Hughes 8.880kg
  • Sean Tallon 8.560kg

All the anglers returning to Castlecoote Lodge for presentation and terrific food served by Mary leydon the results where announced and section prizes given out for each day also.

Final results

  • Cathal Hughes 32.520kg
  • Rory Dunne 30.920kg
  • Shane Dunne 23.900kg.

A raffle took place for 3 spot prizes which where kindly sponsored by club member Peter Walsh which included a tackle voucher for Anglers Choice in Carrickmacross Co. Monaghan. Your support is much appreciated Peter thank you. Marcus Kirwan won the tackle voucher and Bill Cassidy and Darren greaney both won a Daiwa reel each.

A big thank you to our other sponsors Walter Young Tiling and Flooring, Athleague and Bernard Keane, Athleague, Kepak meats, Athleague and Castlecoote Lodge for feeding everyone ast the presentation. Also to Inland fisheries Ireland for their support and development of the venues in the area recently.

April finishes with a flourish on Delphi

Guy Hollis landed a cracking fish of 14lbs6.5ozs off Finlough

David McEvoy reports from Delphi where they had a very dry April, but the month finished with a few fish…

Well I’m afraid the Easter Bunny did not bring us loads of water, but we did actually manage to finish the month with five fish in the last seven days. That brought our total catch for April to nine fish, which although below the 10 year average is not too bad when one considers we had the driest April since 1997.

Total rainfall for the month was 58.8mms (2.31”), which for Delphi is very low. Our river has been on it’s knees for the last two weeks with the gauge being below 10 since the 19th. At the moment it’s -6 and dropping but hopefully we will see some change in the next week.

Guy Hollis landed a cracking fish of 14lbs6.5ozs off Finlough
Guy Hollis landed a cracking fish of 14lbs6.5ozs off Finlough

There were four fish in the first seven days of the month, all off the river. The fish were taken by Werner, Tim McCormack, Margaret Downes and Magne Eri, all weighing between 7lbs7ozs and 8lbs. The fish then went on holidays and the water dropped off. Our weather was to die for if you weren’t a fisherman. Having said that one has to appreciate weather like this in Connemara at this time of year.

The fish finally came back to life on the 24th when Heinz Hoefler had a fish of 7lbs9ozs off Finlough on a Silver Wilkinson Shrimp. Tim Pettigrew had one the next day off the Turn Pool of 8lbs5ozs on a Van Beck tube with the river at 0. Dominic Cox kept the run going when he landed a nice fish of 8lbs11ozs the following day off Finlough on a Silver Cascade.

There was a break then for two days until Guy Hollis landed a cracking fish of 14lbs6.5ozs off Finlough on a Green Highlander Variant. It was nice to see a fish like this come in especially given the conditions we are experiencing.

Urs finished the month off on the 30th with one off Finlough of 7lbs14ozs on a Delphi Collie. The first few days of May have been difficult, with the river being very low and the sun has also come out in style with temperatures reaching 21 degrees C. It looks like we will have to endure this beautiful weather for another few days and enjoy Delphi at it’s most stunning best.

A couple of salmon and 5 sea trout to 6lb 6oz on Currane

John With his C&R Salmon
John With his C&R Salmon

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane which where another specimen sea trout was reported…

28/4/17 Where do I start, well I suppose at the beginning and sadly the end is like the beginning and why do I say this well my Noble anglers went out first thing this morning empty handed and came back to their harbours this evening empty handed and one can only come to the conclusion that their choice of flies and lures have a lot to be desired and with 10 boats out manipulating this day, they ought to be ashamed of their performance. Wind West light to fresh with good cloud cover. Rrainfall 0.2mm. Maximum air temperature 11.9c.

29/4/17 I start on a sad note and for good reason, its with great sympathy that I have to inform you that my neighbour Mrs. Phyllis Greenan RIP of Douglas, Co Cork and of Caherdaniel West, Co Kerry, sadly past away on the 27th and on behalf of all the good people of Caherdaniel and Kerry I would like to send our deepest sympathy’s to her son Philip and all her family and friends and on a personal note, sorry Philip for your  great loss and I will always remember you holding up your first Salmon with your Mum down by the Lake, all I can say is your Mum may be gone but will never be forgotten. Now to today’s fishing news, Lough Currane was  wild this morning with a strong SE wind blowing but this didn’t deter four boats manipulating in all departments and as the 5 bells rang my Noble Anglers came in and looked at their calculators, low and behold all they could only register was a  0! need I say more. Wind as already stated, overcast with heavy showers throughout the day. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.5mm. Maximum air temperature 12.4c.

John With his C&R Salmon
John With his C&R Salmon

30/4/17 It was another wild day on Lough Currane, wild or not, anglers headed out and it’s the fly anglers that take all the headlines plus some mighty  quotes! So to the action and we head for the C&R fly department at the  Ledge, UK angler Mr. John Eames, while fishing with his Gillie, caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon. Now for John’s quote of the day! 8lb Salmon caught on a Silver Stoat returned – I did not fail in my duties!!!!!!! Now we head for a Salmon fly fishing lesson, for the Gillie and the client, when fly fishing one shouldn’t leave your  renowned fly fishing station and for good reason, you might lose your spot to other renowned fly anglers and land up with egg on your face, so remember when taking a rest make sure your within the boundary’s of the Station!! Now we head for the Sea Trout fly department, UK angler Mr. Phil Staniforth, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a fine 4lbs. Sea Trout and now Dominic’s quote of the day, no Photo too rough and broke my Oarlocks, that’s how rough it was out there and I’m very tired after a hard day holding the boat, time for a well earned pint!! Now we head for the trolling department, German Angler fishing out of www.butlerarms.com  Mr. Axel ZurBrugge caught a fine Sea Trout on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and Neil also reported to me  that in the past few days he and his client caught and released two Seatrout while fishing the world Famous Butler Pool and www.watervillegolflinks.ie Wind SE gale blowing at times with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 13.6mm.Maximum air temperature 12.6c.

Mr. Joe Lane and is Sea Trout May 1 2017 001
Mr. Joe Lane and is Sea Trout May 1 2017

1/5/17 Mr. Joe Lane of Co. Cork was the toast of the Lough Currane anglers today and for good reason, while trolling with his good friend, Mr. Liam Boland also of Co. Cork, caught a cracker of a 6 lbs. 6 ozs Sea Trout on a Rapala. Joe was telling me that he had one almighty battle, but it wasn’t long before the Sea Trout came to the surface and his good friend Mr. Liam Boland was ready and waiting with the net and as they say the rest is history and by all accounts there is some celebration this evening in Cork. Now for the Salmon news and what can I say? not a lot because they failed miserably in their duties with the flie and lure. Wind WNW light with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 7.6mm. Maximum air temperature 12.1c.

2/5/17 There were a few nice boats out manipulating this day with the fly and the lure and trying their best to stimulate their fly’s and their lure’s to attract the Wild Atlantic Salmon or a Lough Currane Premier Sea Trout and what did they get for their efforts, as this is a Family Blog, I will be as polite as one can be and its simple, they enticed absolutely nothing. As the evening fell my Noble anglers headed for the nearest watering hole to talk about the one that got away, as the Guinness hit their vital organs the losses and weights got bigger, you could say all in an anglers days repertoire. Wind W then veered SE with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.5mm. Maximum air temperature 14.0c.

Scenic shot
Nice weather for photography

3/5/17 You could say that the weather was in control of the anglers today and for good reason, with bright sunshine all day and a light wind from the West, one would think that the high stool and a pint of larger in the hand was the order of the day, well think again because UK angler  Mr. Mark Knowles, caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon on the fly off the point of Darby’s Island, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton junior. So to all you anglers that say a bright day is no good for fishing you can Mark that as incorrect. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.2mm. Maximum air temperature 16.0c.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Rain and salmon needed on the Laune

Billy Downes reports that as of Wednesday 3rd of May the Laune is at .8 M on the gauge at the Laune Bridge.  This is low but not hopelessly low, still fishable by all methods.  The Yellow rainfall warning obviously did not apply to Kerry because the river did not stir.

News of salmon being landed or even met by our members is non-existent.  While there are a few fish running the river and ending up in the lakes they are not willing to look at anything as they swim by.  There is also the reality that there are too few of them there for an angler to get a pull.  A few small sea trout reported.

Prospects: If we were to get a good rain fall and the river was to come up by .5 M things might improve. But there is always a chance if you venture out.

A few good salmon about the Lee

lee
Paul Hanley

Eileen Carroll Murphy  in the Macroom office reports that 5 salmon were landed for the week ending 30th April from club waters on the Lee. The salmon were caught by anglers fishing the fly and spinning. Best reported fish was a salmon of 10.5lbs landed by a local angler.

RIVER LEE ESB FISHERY INNISCARRA

Paul Hanley had 3 salmon from the Inniscarra fishery on Saturday. The first was a good fish of 12lbs, which needed a bit of thought to first of all hook and then play in the low water. After this the fly got a few plucks but seemed to lose its charm. Switching to a spinner saw a second fish caught. This one was another fresh fish of about 11lb. Later in the evening he had a third on spinner again. All were released.

Paul tells us that there seems to be a few coming through and with the fresh rain forecast we should get a good push of salmon soon with the coloured high water.

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
