Mick Flanagan has more news of super trout on Ennell…

In the past few weeks we highlighted some beautiful trout being caught on Ennell. Well this week we feature a cracking trout caught by Raharney Angler Jim Glynn. Jim, we were told, loves his bit of fishing, and on this angling adventure spent a day trolling with Jason Darby of Irishtown.

Its certainly going to be interesting on Ennell come the May Fly season, and just see will some of these cracking fish take the fly. I was on Ennell pike fishing last week, and the Lake was quite calm, and a good number of big trout were pitching and some showing an interest in surface feeding.

A few big pike make the difference for Dutch anglers in Longford

Jan van Heukelum with a nice Pike

Kevin Lyons reports on the catches from a group of Dutch anglers in Longford…

Richard van der Grijn, Jent van der Vies, Ad Besemer and Jan van Heukelum from Holland were here once again at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford for their annual Pike fishing trip. Things started a bit slow for them but picked up as the week went on. Most of the pike caught were males and small for the time of year. They used both soft and hard lures which seemed to have the same results, but it was Jan that came out on top with four or five larger fish on the last two days fishing.

The spots they fished should have produced some good fish for them like the week before but it was not to be. Well that’s fishing, thanks guys and hope to see you again next year.

All fish returned unharmed.

Spring fishing has picked up in Galway over the last couple of weeks, with some nice spring salmon landed by anglers. Water levels have been slowly dropping, with one gate now open, providing superb opportunities for fly anglers in particular.

With more fresh fish being seen every day now, and water levels coming into better condition, fishing prospects for the rest of the spring run look pretty good in Galway.

Ronan Cusack reports that unseasonal weather this week resulted in a mixed report from Lough Mask, with the best of the fishing on calmer days to buzzer and olive patterns in sheltered bays.

Tom Doc Sullivan guided two UK anglers over the weekend and they had 11 trout (best fish 5lbs, all released) for 3 days, on a mixture of buzzer and olives. Tom said they concentrated their fishing mainly on the southern end of the lake as there were plenty of olives hatching each day to keep trout interested. Noel Fay from Kildare fished with Billy Graham from Fermanagh for 2 days last weekend and they had 9 trout over the 13” limit plus several undersize, mainly on wet flies (best fish 3lbs). Kevin Sheridan and Ted Wherry fished together on Sunday and they had 2 fish for the day (best fish 1.75lbs). Ronan Cusack and Kevin Egan, Ballinrobe also fished together on Sunday last and they had 4 (best fish 3lbs, all released)

14 year old Eliot Thievenaz caught a trout to remember last Wednesday while fishing for a half day on Mask with Philip Comber from the Old Stone Barn. He landed and released a beautiful trout estimated at 8lbs on a Tasmanian Devil off the Ballykyne Rocks.

There has been a few reports of Mayfly on some of the warmer days, so hopefully the best is yet to come…

German anglers enjoy day out on Killala Bay!

Happy German anglers on Killala Bay

On Sunday 23rd April a party of anglers from the Blackforest area of Germany ventured out on Killala Bay. The anglers set out from Killala Pier at 8.30am. Mackerel were scarce but skipper Donal Kennedy was well prepared providing plenty bait.

The first stop produced some fine coalfish. The next drift over sand brought turbot and dabs to the boat along with some lesser spotted dogfish. After a while, the skipper decided to change location again and, as a result, cod, pollack, whiting and about 20 mackerel were caught. All in all an enjoyable day for everyone on Killala Bay!

Good Olive hatches on Lough Arrow

Despite cold north-westerly winds for most of the week, hatches of olives appeared in sheltered bays of Lough Arrow allowing for some good fishing conditions.

Luke O’Connell & Paul Casey had 4 trout, while John Gorman & Keith Lindsay boated 4, best at 2.5 lbs. Gerry Martin also did will landing 6 trout, best at 3.5 lbs. Ken Murray & Gerry Kelly enjoyed great fishing over the past weekend catching 11 fish (9 released), best at 3 lbs.  Paul Colreavy had a good fish of over 4 lbs. a week ago.

With milder conditions this week, hatches of Olives should improve further and prospects for the coming weeks are looking good.
