Irish Angling Update – 16 March 2017

Salmon released by Gelnda Powell on the Munster Blackwater

Well, it’s only one day to that time of year when the whole world goes green and everyone does their level best to be a bit Oirish. While plenty get caught up in parades, pubs and Patrick’s Day pageantry, plenty more will be taking the day to get acquainted with their local trout waters. The last few days have been beautiful here in Ireland, plenty of sunshine and much missed warmth in the days. There’s been a change though – it’s cool now and there’s a bit of rain in it. Sure it wouldn’t be St Patrick’s Day if it wasn’t raining…

In the last few days the Munster Blackwater has come back in order after being high for a couple of weeks. The river is fishing better and a few salmon were caught on both the Ballyduff Bridge and Blackwater Salmon Fishery beats.  Other Cork rivers also saw an improvement and there were 2 salmon reported on the Lee and the Bandon had its first fish of the season. The Killarney Lakes can produce a few fish but reports are hard to come by. We did hear of one fish on the Long Range though. Lough Currane didn’t produce any salmon in the last week, but at least those trying to connect with one enjoyed improved conditions.  Heading to Connemara we hear that the Dawros River (Kylemore Abbey Fishery) produced it’s first of the season just yesterday. A little further north at Delphi there was some good fishing towards the end of last week and 3 salmon were landed in 2 days. Three was the number on the Drowes too with another 3 taken on Lough Melvin.

There were notably less anglers on Lough Corrib last week but those that ventured out had some good fishing. Trout to 7lb were taken on the brickeen while the flymen had fish to over 5lb. Ballindiff Angling Club chairman Andrew Boyd and friend Dave McCormack had 3 fish to the boat on Sunday last, with Andrew landing a trout of 5.5lbs on the fly. All these fish were sportingly released and Andrew wins Catch of the Week for his big trout.

Duckfly are making an appearance but the real hatch is still to come. On Lough Mask it was a different story and the Duckfly there contributed to catches of up to 10 trout over 13 inches to the boat on wetfly. Fishing like this was reported by (and bettered) by other anglers and it could well be the destination of choice for a St. Patrick’s Day cast.

The abundance of cold flood water seems to have slowed down the coarse angling a bit and reports were a little thin on the ground. A new club in the Cavan Monaghan area fished their first competition ever and there were some good catches of small roach and hybrids. Stocked fisheries did a little better and Oaklands produced bags to 28kg in the Munster League. We expect to see more reports from this weekend on as the first Festival of the Season is fished at Inniscarra on St Patrick’s day.

Pike spawning is underway at most fisheries, or the fish are so focused on the impending urge to mate that they’re not feeding properly. Some good fish were reported in the Camlin and District Anglers competition at Lanesborough and anglers belly boating had some decent pike in the Carrickmacross area. The O’Caseys Pike Angling Club had less success in the Monaghan area, meeting mostly jacks. Anyone who does connect with a heavy female fish is asked to handle and release them carefully to avoid stressing these hen pike at this crucial stage in their life cycle.

The Menapia Club in Wexford had some great fishing at Ballyhack at the weekend. there were 118 anglers out and they had 300 fish between them. Plenty of whiting, codling and flats were caught. Best fish was a 38cm whiting. Good fish also featured in Donegal where once again sea caught sea trout provided plenty of thrills and spills. There were good flounder also to be had and fish to over 40cm are being caught and released. In Kerry we have reports of lure caught bass and one angler had 4 good fish in 2 days. all tagged and released as part of the National Bass Tagging Programme.

Angler tourists to Waterville, Co. Kerry spend on average €644 during their stay, according to research published this week by Inland Fisheries Ireland with assistance from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). The research, which was carried out with the Waterville Lakes and River Trust, highlights the significant recreational and economic value of the fisheries resource to the area. For more information on this study see: Angling tourists visiting Waterville, Co. Kerry spend €644 per trip

And now for the weather. Saint Patrick’s Day Friday will start off cloudy and windy with rain developing through much of Connacht and northwest Ulster. In the afternoon the rain will become widespread and heavy across the country and it will continue to persist into evening time. Highest temperatures around 9 or 10C in blustery westerly winds. The outlook is for fresh, showery, cloudy conditions on Saturday, more drizzle than rain on Sunday. Monday will be mostly dry but wet weather returns for Tuesday.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Anglers enjoy good sport on Mask

Ronan Cusack reports on some excellent angling from Mask this week, as the duckfly make their first appearance of 2017. Westport brothers Colin and Ronan Gibbons had a fantastic day’s sport on Sunday last, landing 10 trout on wets in the Tourmakeady area. All trout were over 13 inches and returned to the water. Joe Fitzharris and Paul McEwan from Ballyhaunis had 4 nice fish on Tuesday (best fish 1.75lbs, all returned). Joe fished again on Friday with John Munroe from Partry and they had a further 7 (best fish 1.5lbs, all returned).
Sean Maloney from Ballinrobe had a good week this week reporting fish on every outing. Sean’s best day so far was Tuesday last where he finished with 4 trout (best fish 3.5lbs). Malcolm Naughton and fishing partner JJ Hannon from Loughrea had 11 on Sunday (best fish 2.5lbs, all returned). Kevin Beattie and Ray Broughton from Ballinrobe have been out most days this week and reported excellent sport pulling dark wet flies on slow intermediate lines.
Anglers have reported some trout being a bit thin or “slatty”, which is normal at this time of year, so they are asked to allow these fish time to mend and return them to the water.
The water level and clarity is excellent at the moment, so if you’re looking for a bit of sport over St Patrick’s weekend “Mask is the place to be” according to Ronan!

Declan Gibbons reports on that last week saw slower fishing activity on Lough Corrib but with more settled weather and a rise in temperatures the duckfly shouldn’t be too far away, indeed some fly are making an appearance already. Those anglers who were out encountered fish and had some nice sport.
In the Roscahill area Gearoid Little had 11 trout for two day’s trolling, and most of the 11 were released.
In the Oughterard area local man Peter Kelly went out on Corrib for a few hours in his traditional punt trolling the brickeen and had great success, landing a cracking fish of 7lbs.

Michael Donnellan, Oughterard had 12 trout for two day’s trolling and sportingly returned 9. John Gibbons, Oughterard had 5 fish for two day’s trolling.
In the Cornamona area Kevin Cronin of Dublin and Roundstone was fishing on Wednesday afternoon last with local angler Peter Walsh and had a cracking trout of 4lbs on a Silver Dabbler.
Staying in the Cornamona area Richard Molloy of Ballard Boat Hire and Self Catering (087-2879339) reported on a Swiss group enjoying excellent fishing – trolling – for their week’s stay and landing 25 trout, all sportingly released with the best fish estimated at 4.25lbs.

Tuesday's fish weren't bad either

Sea Bass Hunter Tomasz Eckert had his first bass of 2017 on last month and it’s taken some time to get amongst these lightening fresh fish again. But he managed that feat this week with a super bass on Monday followed by three more on Tuesday.

Mondays fish was fair and fat

National Bass Programme

IFI has established a National Bass Programme to collect data on bass in order to provide scientific advice to support management and conservation of Ireland’s bass resource. Bass is Ireland’s only marine fish species which is managed for angling. The programme is being developed to determine the status of bass stocks and also to improve understanding of their ecology and biology in Ireland for the long-term sustainability of the species. No wind on Currane this week, but no salmon either

Vincent Appleby reports on another salmonless week on Lough Currane…

8/3/17 There were just two boats manipulating this day and they caught noting for their efforts, though local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reported that he caught the odd Kelt. Where the other boat is concerned there was no comment on this Anglers performance, you can say this angler failed in all departments. Now for wind, there was light SW wind and overcast. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 6.1 mm.

9/3/17 There were 3 boats pontificating and manipulating their Rapalas or flies and what can one say on their performance as this is a Family site, I will be as polite as one can be, its simple, their professionalism is on a low even though the lake is high. Wind SE with good cloud cover. Amount of rainfall yesterday 1.1mm maximum air temperature 11.6 c

10/3/17 Again just 3 boats out trying to stalk the wild Atlantic salmon on Lough Currane today and I can say that the anglers were certainly out stalked, so the least said the soonest mended. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with misty rain. Amount of rainfall yesterday 2.5 mm. Maximum air temperature 13.7 c.

11/3/17 The talk of the day was the weather and for good reason, it was a cracker of a day with bright sunshine with reasonable cloud cover at times and a nice breeze from the SW. There was a nice few boats out manipulating and stimulating the Currane waters, but all to no avail because my Noble anglers couldn’t stimulate their flies or their Rapalas to attract the Wild Atlantic Salmon. Wind as already stated, amount of rainfall yesterday  1.2 mm. maximum air temperature 11.3c.

12/3/17 Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front. Just for the record there were 3 boats out and going by all accounts all anglers failed miserably in their duties in all departments so the least said the soonest mended. On a personal note it would be great to see a few more boats out there. Wind, there was the odd violent gust from the NW then veered SW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Amount of rainfall yesterday 6.5 mm. Maximum air temperature 12.9 c

13/3/17 There was just two boats out  and both failed miserably in their duties with rod and line and last but not least they failed to let their fingers do the talking at the end of their day, the only excuse they may have is that they were too embarrassed to admit their failures. Wind SW light and overcast.

14/3/17 Local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com reported that there were 4 boats out  and I will finish today’s notes on a quote from local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com the same result as yesterday. Wind SW light with reasonable cloud cover. Amount of rainfall yesterday 0.5 mm. Maximum air temperature 12.7c

15/3/17 There were just a few boats out and I’m afraid it’s back to the fishing school of technology for the lot of them as they all failed miserably in their duties in all departments, so on that note we will head for the Gospel of fishing! firstly don’t bull shit! secondly don’t exaggerate your catches!  And last but not least never get caught out on you’re 3 major fishing sins of the day! Wind SW light and overcast with rain at times. Amount of rainfall yesterday 1.1mm. Maximum air temperature 13.2 minimum 8.2c.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

3 pike for 202cm win Camlin anglers comp at Lanesborough

Camlin and District Anglers held their Ray Gill Memorial Competition on Sunday at Lanesborough. It was a crisp blustery Spring day. Water levels had risen significantly over the past couple of weeks which made fishing challenging. This was our first competition in which we used measuring boards and the fish were measured rather than weighed. Prizes went for the 3 longest fish over 50cm.

The measuring boards - Thanks to our sponsors Dennistons and Joe Mc Dermott

Really good sea trout and flounder fishing in Donegal Bay

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports (in a style James Joyce would be proud of) on the fishing around Donegal Bay …

11 March: Great fishing at the Mariners league outing last night as 13 anglers caught and released flounders and dabs and coleys and whiting.

Fintra Beach on Saturday
Fintra Beach on Saturday

Big scores as plenty of coley were over the minimum size of 23cm and the winning score on the night was a great fishing of whiting including treble hauls for John Cunningham who also won the longest fish cash pool with a 41cm whiting. Well done to all.

12 March: A cloudless day on Donegal Bay and the alcove was stuffed with a big shoal of sea trout chasing at sandeels.

The lure of the moment
The lure of the moment

Hansen stripper lures on the light spinning rods sent them wild coming in like mackerel in high summer a fish a cast for 3 casts in a row twice and a total of 25 trout caught and released back during the session, a great exciting way to fish and find the fish striking the wobbling lure as it works it’s way through the sandeel shoals on Donegal Bay.

Lovely flounder!
Lovely flounder!

13 March: A lovely morning this morning with the wind whipping up as the day went on on a sheltered cove behind the hill a shallow beach on Donegal Bay was alive with fish some lovely double hauls of flounder to a whopping 41cm in length patrolling the shallows in the balmy spring air and some lovely conditioned sea trout to 42cm splashing around to escape the hooks before release on another busy few hours on the shore
